Following the recent global financial crisis and the collapse of major organisations such as Lehm... more Following the recent global financial crisis and the collapse of major organisations such as Lehman Brothers, and the earlier corporate failings of Enron and HIH, there has been a shift of focus towards the role of ethics education in the formation of business professionals. In other professional settings, such as policing and medicine, similar major crises have highlighted the significance of the early development of ethical practice in emerging professionals.
This paper presents the framework for a developing project that intends to use virtual world tech... more This paper presents the framework for a developing project that intends to use virtual world technologies, namely Second Life®, as a platform for learning simulations through role plays with the intent to improve the development of professional decision making amongst pre-graduate teachers undertaking a unit in professional ethics. At present students engage in role-plays within the classroom environment as a tool for learning decision-making and ethical responses.

The focus of this research is on the ways that early career police learn the craft of policing. Early career police are defined as police in their first three years of service.

At present students engage in discussion of ethical issues and case studies within the classroom environment as tools for learning decision-making and developing moral sensitivity.

The research presented forms part of a larger study of newcomers to policing in New South Wales, where recruits generally undertake 20 months of university study, with the final 12 months of their study coinciding with their role as a probationary constable.

Values education is now one of the three core pillars of the New Zealand Curriculum, the other two being key competencies (eg thinking, language, participation) and subject learning (eg English, science, etc.).
Communities of practice are generally accepted as locales of engagement, learning and development... more Communities of practice are generally accepted as locales of engagement, learning and development. This paper reflects on a case study of the evolution of a community of practice amongst staff in a university School of Policing Studies. The case study reveals the requirement for space, in a physical, temporal and timely sense, for open discussion and the formation of shared understanding and trust as key stepping stones to the formation of community.
Students undertaking work-integrated learning programs are exposed to the ethical nature of their... more Students undertaking work-integrated learning programs are exposed to the ethical nature of their chosen profession and the practice setting within which their placement is occurring. These students, as well as developing the technical skills associated with their profession, also develop and acquire professional attributes, including understandings of proper and ethical conduct. It is within these experiences that students begin to shape and understand their identity as professionals.

Governments, such as those of New Zealand and Australia, are increasingly focused on introducing curricular requirements for values education and ethics, and some universities in Australia have already introduced'core generic papers' across all degree programmes, including ethics.

Are they using them to support the teaching of professions and if this is the case, do they introduce virtual worlds into the curriculum to develop and/or expand students' professional learning networks? Are they using virtual worlds to transform their teaching and learning? In recognition of the exciting opportunities that virtual worlds present for higher education, the DEHub Virtual Worlds Working Group was formed.

VirtualPREX explores the experiences of 72 pre-service teachers who undertook a teaching role-play in a virtual world. The researchers discuss this opportunity for pre-service teachers to utilise new methods and avenues in a virtual world to both supplement their learning and undertake preparation for practical experience.
