Nervous Grizzly Bear

Making eye contact with a grizzly bear is always a thrilling experience! Here, a nervous female bear walks by us. This bear was quite afraid of the bears fishing in the river. She would lurk behind us, using us a buffer between her and the other bears. One evening a male grizzly seemed annoyed at her nervous energy and without provocation charged her. She ran for her life, and the male took chase. They ran down the mudflats until they went out of view. The male bear seemed to respond negatively to the nervous female’s unstable energy. During mating season we watched this beautiful female grizzly being followed by a huge male grizzly for hours. When he fell asleep, she slipped away. When we headed back to camp for the night we witnessed a small male bear approach this female, and immediately mount her. Neither size nor persistence led to the mating, although this young male grizzly bear was so short he kept slipping off the female bear’s back. Read more about the details of this fascinating grizzly bear mating scene by clicking here. It is commonly assumed that the largest male bears mate more often, however we witnessed small, young males mating just as much if not more than the huge male bears.
White Grizzly Bear

Grizzly bear fur can be nearly black, red, auburn, dark brown, light brown, blonde and even nearly white like this grizzly bear above. When looking at a white grizzly you can really imagine the evolution of the polar bear. Polar bears evolved from grizzly bears fairly recently on the evolutionary scale. Grizzlies and polar bears can even mate and produce fertile offspring. Clearly, the white color variation in grizzly bears held an advantage for hunting around snow and ice. Grizzlies are also very adept swimmers like polar bears. In fact, one summer we spotted a grizzly bear swimming out to a nearby island populated with breeding gulls and puffins. The island was covered in grizzly bear tracks. To read more about our day trip to this island, click here.
