This comment focuses on the presentation and analysis of experimental data, and how the use of dimensionless variables in graphs would make use of the mathematical properties, placing the single measurement in a more general context, including mass-independence and the isochronism (for small angles). The concept of ‘effective weight’ used by Coelho is then discussed in relation to inertial forces and the principle of equivalence between inertial and gravitational mass.

This is the second of a series of seminars in a very informal setting. It is called a "brown bag" seminar because you may bring your lunch in a bag-or box, wagon, tray, knapsack, etc.-and eat and talk. This seminar will last no longer than one hour, with at least half the time for discussion. We will also look for volunteers who would like to give a future seminar.

Students can make hypotheses in small groups, plan investigations to test multiple possible explanations and draw conclusions about the importance of different variables. The experiments illustrate the principle of equivalence between inertial and gravitational mass, as well as of the importance of mass distribution. Students can develop an intuitive feeling for these concepts even without dealing with the full mathematical treatment, which involves torque, angular momentum and moment of inertia, typically treated in high-school or introductory university physics courses. The paper discusses this investigation as part of a setup of teacher professional development events on a playground.

A student question, posted in a teacher facebook group on a Monday morning, led to a discussion involving 21 comments with 225 replies offered by 16 teachers during the next few days, including several simple experiments, as well as modeling, to evaluate different arguments. The discussions, summarized in this paper, provide an example of how social media can provide an ‘extended teacher room’ where teachers can explore and refine their understanding in a safe and mostly supportive environment, and also find ways to give more elaborate answers to challenging student questions.

The app was used successfully in a variety of contexts, including STEM fairs with primary and secondary students and workshops with undergraduate physics majors and practicing teachers. Anecdotes from our experiences suggest that smartphones are an effective way to introduce learners to the big ideas and big principles in physics.

In a previous study preschool teachers have collected such questions and everyday situations in their own preschool practice. A content analysis was performed resulting in a number of different categories describing the potential science content. With the present study we want to contribute to a deepened understanding of how preschool teachers view the possibility to work with science starting from different kinds of questions and situations in preschool everyday life. The data were collected in focus group interviews with preschool teachers who were asked to evaluate different questions/situations (collected in the previous study) in respect to the extent they could work as starting points for science learning situations. The results show that the preschool teachers put forward different kinds of reasons when discussing whether or not the questions/situations could work as a starting point for science learning. These reasons are discussed in relation to policy documents as well as earlier results in the research field concerning science and preschool.

Since the weak interaction is very short range, the atomic effects increase rapidly with nuclear charge, as Z3. The focus has thus been on heavy atoms, where relativistic effects are essential, and nuclear size must be taken into account. The generalization of atomic many-body methods to relativistic systems involved both computational and formal difficulties, incorporating methods developed in ...

Students may use programming to create and explore different models of physical systems. In this study a small group of upper secondary education students participated in a workshop where they learned to program physics simulations and to create their own models to implement using the programming language Python. Results from the study shows that upper secondary education students are able to create their own models of physical systems and implement them into code. The implemented models were models of hanging cloth and heat diffusion. Results were obtained by analyzing video and audio recordings of the students through the lens of social semiotics.
