Coatlicue by itzamahel on DeviantArt (original) (raw)

An interpretation of Coatlicue, earth goddess in Ancient Mexica Cosmology.

Coatlicue is the mother of the Centzonhuitznahua ('four hundred southerners'), who led by their sister Coyolxauhqui (who's a goddess related to the moon) tried to kill her, but she was saved by her younger son, Huitzilopochtli, who, fully armed, ready to battle and standing tall since birth, killed them (in Coatepec - that means 'Mountain of the Snake'). There are depictions of she wearing a necklace of hearts, and she was fearsome in most of her forms, as she personifies earth itself.
