Indian diaspora is the largest diaspora in the world. As we know, the basic reasons for diaspora ... more Indian diaspora is the largest diaspora in the world. As we know, the basic reasons for diaspora are unemployment, natural disaster, forced migration, etc. In this paper,I would like to depict Indian diaspora in Fiji as an indentured labourers. Indian labourers brought to Fiji as indenturedlabourers to work on a sugarcane plantation. They signed a contract from labourers which was called ‘girmit' and who came under this contract called ‘girmitiya'. It was a five-year contract that contained rules and regulations for workers. They had to face many obstacles during their journey from India to Fiji and also,they had to suffer hardship on Fiji island as indentured labourers. With the passage of time, Indian indentured labourers and their new generation have got the identity as Fiji-Indians.There are many notable Indo-Fijians like James Madhwan who was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in Fiji, Mahendra Chaudhary was the fourth Prime Minister of Fiji, Sidiq Koya was pol...

As we know, the basic reasons for diaspora are unemployment, natural disaster, forced migration, etc. In this paper,I would like to depict Indian diaspora in Fiji as an indentured labourers. Indian labourers brought to Fiji as indenturedlabourers to work on a sugarcane plantation. They signed a contract from labourers which was called 'girmit' and who came under this contract called 'girmitiya'. It was a five-year contract that contained rules and regulations for workers. With the passage of time, Indian indentured labourers and their new generation have got the identity as Fiji-Indians.There are many notable Indo-Fijians like James Madhwan who was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians in Fiji, Mahendra Chaudhary was the fourth Prime Minister of Fiji, Sidiq Koya was politician, opposition leader and statesman and so on. Indians brought as indentured labourers to Fiji island but with their hard work and intelligence they have got their rights and made a distinct place in Fiji.

Diasporic literature reflects the experiences of the immigrants; it includes alienation, displacement, nostalgia, identity crisis, a quest for identity and so on. There are various causes for migration, such as poor economic conditions, human trafficking, better life, etc. Identity plays an important role in migration from one place to another and also plays a crucial role in many studies, such as culture, religion, diaspora and so on. There are various kinds of identity, such as national identity, cultural identity, self-identity, etc. but in the novel, the protagonist is in search of her true and real identity. Jasmine was the third novel, written by Bharati Mukherji. Bharati Mukherjee was a renowned Indo-Canadian writer. This paper depicts through the novel Jasmine how women have to struggle for their life and identity, in search of a better life and in search of their true identity. Through the novel Jasmine, Bharati Mukherjee throws light on the life of a widow and how she tries to get away from the restrictions of home and redesign herself in the host land. Jasmine deals with identity and immigrant experiences and describes the journey of a widow.

Generally, this kind of concept is known as 'diaspora.' Though they settle there, live a better life, but they never totally disconnect from their roots and motherland. We can see these things in the writings of Indian diasporic writers. Attia Hosain was one of the remarkable Indo-British writers. Sunlight on a Broken Column was the first and only novel written by Attia Hosain. In the novel, she beautifully describes the lifestyle of the Indian Muslim taluqadar family; Indian customs, cultures, traditions, and lifestyles of different communities-upper class and lower class live happily together before the partition. It is a semi-autobiographical novel. In the novel, Attia expressed her memories through her words and fictional characters.

Furthermore, this article argues that the Bangladeshi diaspora identity crisis as a major issue of the globe. Diaspora literature depicts the lives of migrants and the uncertainty that surrounds and fills them in foreign lands, and the struggles they face to find their identity. They are placed in a complex space between many worlds and cultures: they can neither forget their native land from which they came, and it would be different if they returned to it now; nor can they fully assimilate into the host land they have adopted. There are many various types of identity such as, gender identity, ethnic identity, communal identity, national identity and so on. When people migrate from their native land to abroad, he does not migrate alone but he carries with him his national identity and ethnic identity as well; these identities lives with him until his death. The Indian diaspora is one of the biggest in the world, as is well known. It is generally accepted that reading a nation's literature is the best way to learn about its traditions and culture. The experiences of migrants, the ambiguity that envelops and fills them in distant nations, and the hardships they experience in trying to find their identity are all depicted in diaspora literature. They are forced to navigate a difficult gap between numerous worlds and cultures where they are unable to fully assimilate into their adoptive home country or forget where they originally came from because of how different it would be now. It is not easy to give definition of Indianness. Indianness is an amalgam of culture, tradition and custom. This research paper explores the Indianness in the writings of Indo-Canadian contemporary diasporic women writers Anita Rao Badami and Anubha Mehta. These women writers artistically describe Indian culture, nostalgic feelings, and their experiences through their works.

It is presumed that A Vindication of the Rights of Woman: with Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects(1792), one of the earliest works on the theory of feminism. A French philosopher, Charles Fourier, coined the term feminism in 1837. Through the novel Sunlight On a Broken Column, this paper depicts how women have to struggle for their identity, rights; and the writer also exposes the hypocrisy of the patriarchal system. Sunlight On A Broken Column was the f irst and only novel written by Attia Hosain. Attia Hosain was one of the notable Indo-British diasporic writers. To migrate from homeland to hostland for a better life is the general concept of diaspora. Sunlight On a Broken column is a semiautobiographical novel. Laila, the protagonist in the novel, plays the role of a strong and intelligent woman character. There are a plethora of events where we can notice the intellectuality and maturity of Laila. Through the character of Laila, Attia Hosain exposes the hypocrisy of patriarchal society.
