It is recognized as a valuable indicator to examine the quality of obstetrics care as it follows similar predictors with maternal death. Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries with the highest rate of maternal mortality and morbidity. Thus, studying the cause and predictors of maternal near-miss is vital to improving the quality of obstetric care, particularly in low-income countries.ObjectiveTo identify determinants of maternal near-miss among women admitted to public hospitals in North Shewa Zone, Ethiopia, 2020.MethodsA facility-based unmatched case-control study was conducted on 264 women (88 cases and 176 controls) from February to April 2020. Data were collected using pretested interviewer-administered questionnaires and a...

Previously published work on menstrual irregularity used inconsistent definition which results in a difference in prevalence. Therefore the study aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of menstrual irregularity among undergraduate students of Debre Berhan University, Ethiopia. Methods A cross-sectional study design was carried out among 660 undergraduate female students at Debre Berhan University. To get representative study participants, a stratified sampling technique was used. To collect the data self-administered questionnaire was used. Physical examination and anthropometric measurement were also done. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 21. Logistic regression analysis was done. A significant association was declared at a p-value less than 0.05. Result A total of 620 students participated in the present study with a response rate of 93.9%. Out of the total study parti...

Assessing the prevalence of IPIs and potential risk factors in different localities is essential to enhance control strategies. To date, no prevalence assessment study was conducted in Debre Berhan town. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of IPIs and associated habit and culture-related risk factors among primary schoolchildren in Debre Berhan town, Northeast Ethiopia. Method School based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2017. A total of 645 children aged 6–15 years were selected from six primary schools in Debre Berhan town via a multistage random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data about sociodemographic and potential risk factor variables. Fresh stool samples were collected from each child and examined using direct smear and formal-ether concentration technique. Result Among t...

This paper aimed to review and deliver current information regarding the status of broiler chicken production in Ethiopia to readers.. In Ethiopia, Poultry (chicken) production plays a significant role in the supply of human food (eggs and meat) in rural and urban area and as a source of income, especially to small holder farmers. About 95.86% of the total national poultry products (eggs and meat) are contributed by indigenous chickens kept under village management system while the remaining 1.35% is obtained from intensively kept exotic breed of chickens and 2.79% are obtained from hybrids. Poultry products offer affordable quality animal protein sources for the smallholder farm households. Poultry consumption is moreover closely associated with wealth status. Chickens are consumed mostly during holidays. In general, poultry consumption accounts for less than 1% of the total annual food needs of farm households. Under poultry production prevailing disease, predators, nutrition, poor housing, weak agricultural extension service, low income level, religion and gender are major constraints to poultry production and its meat consumption in Ethiopia. Ethiopia has a small (but growing) number of medium- and large-scale intensive broiler (>1000 broilers ) located in and around Addis Ababa, Debre Zeit, Modjo and Adama. Such poultry farms are also emerging in the growing urban areas of Mekele, Bahir Dar, Gondar, Hawassa and Dire Dawa. Therefore to increase Current status of broiler chicken production in Ethiopia, poultry production and meat consumption domestication of other poultry species, giving special emphasize on exotic poultry production, and solving of all the constraints are better.

In particular, the Somali region of the country still has by far the lowest level of immunization coverage. The objective of this study was to measure the immunization coverage of 12-23 months old children and associated factors in the urban and rural areas of Jigjiga district. A community based cross-sectional survey was conducted in 582 households with 12-23 months old children in two urban and four rural wards. The data were collected from mothers or caregivers through interviews based on pre-tested and structured questionnaires and from the review of vaccination cards. Data were processed using SPSS version 16. To identify factors associated with the immunization status of children, bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were worked out and the Hoshmer and Lemes...

ABSTRACT Ethiopia has a large livestock population, a relatively favorable climate for improved, ... more ABSTRACT
Ethiopia has a large livestock population, a relatively favorable climate for improved, high yielding dairy cattle breeds and regions with less animal disease-stress that make the country to have a substantial potential for dairy development. Taking this in to account, this paper is prepared with the objectives of over viewing the Ethiopian dairy sector and its contribution for the economy of the country. Considering the huge potential of the country, investing in development interventions to the dairy sector will contribute to poverty alleviation by increasing the income of smallholder dairy producers and creating employment and transforming the existing largely subsistent type of milk production to commercial level. In 2010, dairying created an estimated 588, 000 full-time on-farm jobs. Smallholder farmers represent about 85% of the population and are responsible for 98% of the milk production. Productivity however is relatively low, quality feeds are difficult to obtain and support services are inadequate. The milk marketing system is not well developed giving the majority of smallholder milk producers, limited access to the market. Review of the dairy sector in Ethiopia indicates that there is a need to focus interventions more coherently. Development interventions should be aimed at addressing technological gaps and marketing problems. The government needs to take actions on this sector and should make developmental interventions in the various components such as breeding, animal health, feeding, milk collection, storage, processing and distribution.. There is an immediate and growing shortage of dairy products in all major cities of Ethiopia and the trends of economic prospects for dairy industry performance and development are rather good both at small holder and on more commercial levels Therefore to increase the economic and cultural significance of milk to use modern technology.

Milk is yellowish-white non-transparent liquid secreted by epithelial cells in mammary gland of mammals. It is very nutritious food rich in macro and micronutrients. Being nutritious and liquid, it is an ideal for microbial growth and multiplication. The aim of this review is to compile information from earlier works on milk and milk products handling practices, utilization, quality and safety in Ethiopia. Milk and milk products to be safe and to have high quality, responsibility should be taken on dairy producers, retailers and manufacturers. Ethiopia is known by huge number of livestock; however, milk production and consumption is below the expected standard. In Ethiopia, milk hygiene practices are below the standard due to insufficient pre-milking and post-harvest handling practices. Milk quality is a blend of characteristics (chemical, physical, bacteriological and aesthetic) that boost up the acceptability of the milk product. Commonly used microbial quality tests for milk and milk products are determination of Total Bacterial Count (TBC) or Standard Plate Count (SPC), Coliform Count (CC), Yeast and Mould Counts, Enterobacteriaceae, and Somatic Cell Counts (SCC). In general, microbial content of milk and milk products is an indicative of the hygienic levels at milking, cleanliness of utensils, storage, and transportation.

Poultry meat has several advantages, namely the quality of nutrition is good enough, delicious taste, relatively affordable price, easy to get and accepted all levels of society with diverse backgrounds. Poultry immunity, health, and production are several factors that challenge the future growth of the poultry industry. Consumer confidence, product quality and safety, types of products, and the emergence and re-emergence of diseases will continue to be major challenges to the current situation and the strategic future of the industry. Production, financial, marketing are a major constraints on broiler chickens production. More than half of poultry producers indicated there was a high level of constraint facing them. Production, financial, and marketing constraints had high effect on producers.
