The concept of music takes product of purposefully arranged pattern of sound that takes meaning t... more The concept of music takes product of purposefully arranged pattern of sound that takes meaning through time within social context. However, the notion of sound and music exists in grate diversity. Its understanding and portrayal differ from culture to culture and from society to society. Peoples in different parts of Africa does not have a single word to name music, rather they use multiple words to name musical behaviors. Their understanding and naming take daily economic activities, social occasions such as joy, mourn, rituals and acts like dance in to consideration. Thus, this research paper tries to disclose the notion of sound and music among D’irasha of South Ethiopia. To attain the primary objective of the study qualitative research approach under descriptive research design was used. Primary data of the study was gathered using ethnographic tools such as filed observation and key informant interview. The obtained data was also analyzed using qualitative analysis. The study has revealed that sound, which is called Nassa among the D’irasha plays vital role in their traditional music. The D’irasha people have different versions of sound, but moderate beautiful sound which evokes emotion makes their music. In their culture three sources of sound, i.e., human voice, human body and musical instruments are used to make music. The study also indicated that, the D’irasha people call their music using three names, i.e., Laleta, Hirba and Filla. In their culture music is understood as purposefully arranged pattern of sound which evokes emotional feeling. For them traditional music must hold multiple sound in it, evokes emotional feeling, should happen in socio economic activities, expected to have song lyric or “Dhoya” and body movement or dance in it.
