social media are interactive technologies that allow the creation or sharing/exchange of informat... more social media are interactive technologies that allow the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, career interests, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. the impact of this communication platforms is multidimensional. it has become preferable medium of communication, source of news and even become medium of instruction. despite of this these communication media may also bring serious damages and harm it is not properly managed. this study was conducted on 3rd year students of department of statistics and Soil Resource &Watershed Management of Arsi university during April - May, 2021. the objective of the study was to identify the commonly used social media by these students, the purpose for using social media, and examine the impact of social media in these students. random sample of 52 respondents from this study population was taken and primary data was collected from the respondents using structured questionnaire distributed to the respondents. accordingly, data filled by 51 respondents (1 missing) was analyzed using SPSS V26. the result of the study indicated that Telegram, Facebook, YouTube, and Messenger are the most commonly used social media by these respondents. whereas Twitter, WhatsApp and Skype were rarely used by the students participated in the investigation. it has also been found that social media like Telegram, and YouTube were frequently used for academic purpose and activity that are related with their academic career, whereas Facebook, Messenger, and Imo are used for communication purposes. the students participated in the study did not realize the income that can be collected from TikTok and multidisciplinary advantages obtained from YouTube. the students participated in the study was also did not known the unlimited storage capacity, video and audio call platforms gained from telegram. the study has also revealed that majority of the students feels depressed and angry upon shutdown of the social media and only few portions of the participant feel alright and search for other refreshment options. the study has generally revealed that social media has positive impact on the students who has participated in the investigation.

the analyses in these design are demonstrated using SAS.
