Mikrochimica Acta, 1987

The polarographic behaviour of salicylaldehyde-2-pyridylhydrazone (SAPH) has been studied in aque... more The polarographic behaviour of salicylaldehyde-2-pyridylhydrazone (SAPH) has been studied in aqueous buffer solution containing 40% ethanol using DC and DP polarographic methods. In the pH range 1.8-7.5 the observed single irreversible reduction wave is assigned to the splitting of the N-N bond and reduction of C=N centre. In alkaline medium, a second wave appears at a more negative potential due to the reduction of the salicylaldehyde which is formed by hydrolytic decomposition of the SAPH molecule. The effect of pH on the limiting current and E1/2 as well as the reduction mechanism are discussed and compared with similar compounds. The kinetic parameters of the electrode reaction have been calculated. The analytical properties of the copper(II)-SAPH system is described. The complex gave rise to a single irreversible well-defined wave (E1/2-0.58 V at pH-5.2). The reaction process is diffusion controlled. A method is suggested for the determination of Cu(II) in presence of different metal ions as the difference in their E1/2 values is sufficient for the purpose.

All the foregoing has produced a state of extremism towards the Christians of the Arab East as an essential component of Arab societies, thereby causing their exodus outside their countries, whether Iraq or Syria. The question presents itself: Are the events of the Arab Spring responsible for the exodus of the Christians of the East? Or is the matter related to the religious discourse and the school curricula which inculcate in the minds of students and youth what makes them reach this state of violence and extremism towards the other? The study has concluded that extremism and violence are a direct consequence of the official discourse, whether in the mosque, or school, alongside encouragement or at least a tacit acceptance by the Arab political regimes of those forms of conduct which may be utilized as a "religious card" to obtain internal political legitimacy on the one hand, while highlighting their role as a "protector" of religious and ethnic minorities on the other.

The said Message seeks to expound a vision characterized by flexibility and openness based on the Islamic Religion in terms of the values of tolerance and humanism which it embodies, especially after the "phenomenon" of religious extremism in the Arab and Muslim world metamorphasized from a "domestic issue" in the shadow of the bipolar international system into an "international phenomenon" with the demise of the Cold War, and the unipolar hegemony of the United in the world, in addition to the September 11, 2001 bloody events, which are considered as among the most important manifestations of the reality of this transformation. Jordan exploited the absence of Arab and Islamic initiatives representing the "silent majority" in those countries by launching this Message, particularly given that it possessed two sources of legitimacy: religious legitimacy represented in the connection between the Hashemite family and the Prophet Muhammad, the prophet of Islam; and political legitimacy represented in the experience of Muslim-Christian coexistence in Jordan. Notwithstanding the fact that this "religio-political" initiative did not achieve its aims as intended by its exponents, either because of competition between Arab and Muslim countries to represent Muslims and to speak in their name, or due to technological weaknesses in the media and means of communication to convey the Message to all corners of the world, it was actually capable of presenting a religious and political discourse dealing with the dialogue of civilizations that merited analysis, discussion and interest.

What is the role of the political authorities in this new press and its new role? Starting from this somewhat general question, this study analyses the development of a Al-Rai, a Jordanian daily newspaper, as an example of the Arab press in general, and the Jordanian press in particular. It is the 'newspaper of the authorities' and their semi-official porte parole. It is considered as representative of the third generation of Jordanian press, which is based on somewhat large media institutions. Finally, Al-Rai is Jordan's leading newspaper in sales and advertising, and in 1999 it was the Arabic newspaper that is most read on the Internet. The study will analyse the reasons behind the establishment of this newspaper in 1971, its movement from the public to the private sector and back, as well as the tools that the political authorities used to pressure and control it, including closure and appropriation. The study will also review changes in the Jordanian press, (including Al-Rai) produced by the process of democratisation at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s. These changes included new legislation as well as advances in Information and Communications Technology and their effect on journalists and their professional performance.
