I was asked to post a job ad for the Art of Problem Solving website here, and it seems that alums of HCSSiM might be good people for such a gig. --- Tom----------------------------------Art of Problem Solving offers textbooks, online classes, and other online resources for the top middle and high school math students in the English-speaking world. Our international online community at www.artofproblemsolving.com has over 60,000 members who have posted nearly 1.5 million messages to our community message board. Many of the best middle and high school students around the world take online math classes at Art of Problem Solving each year. Among our students are many winners of major national contests such as MATHCOUNTS, ARML, and the USA Mathematical Olympiad. We are located in Alpine, California, 30 miles east of San Diego.We currently have one position available.Position: Online School Manager and InstructorDescription of PositionOur online school manager will organize the school schedule and manage our teams of graders and teaching assistants, most of whom are students at top universities. The school manager will also teach online classes, help develop new courses, augment existing course materials, communicate with students and parents about Art of Problem Solving's online school, and help develop new offerings at Art of Problem Solving.QualificationsUndergraduate or graduate degree in a math-related field. Strong communication skills are required, and writing samples will be requested as part of the interview process. Teaching experience is preferred, particularly experience working with high-performing math students, but is not required for candidates with strong mathematics, communication, and organizational backgrounds.The position is full-time in Alpine, CA, and the company will assist with relocation expenses. Saturday, February 21st, 2009 3:41 pm - LaTeX Question ascii_encore (cross posted at ascii_encore (my livejournal))I want to believe there's a way to make nice vector graphics, possibly within latex (or using some simple tools, such as a text editor, to make .eps files?). Does anyone know of this sort of thing? I want fairly simple things, like graphs (for my graph theory class) and polygons (for my computational geometry class.I will now proceed to try googling for this, as well as creating some simple graphics in Mathematica and exporting; if I find anything interesting I will edit this post. The deal is this: If you're willing to work 5 hours for us during the conference, we'll cut the registration fee in half for you. The "work" here would be things like: sitting at a registration desk (and presumably registering some people or helping confused conference attendees), helping direct traffic of people going from room to room or to different buildings, helping move things around or set things up as needed, or helping with any of the numerous things that will crop up. The cost of registration is (still) not yet known, but previous projections had it being around $102. I'm guessing it'll be less, though. Soon (SOON!) (like, within 24 hours and with more updates after that) more info will appear on the YPMD web page, but I can give you the skivvy right here that a big ol' load of really cool talks are planned (can you say "choreographic topology"?), as well as nifty pens and things that say "YPMD" on them and are adorned with images of your favorite colored animal. It sure sounds like fun to me. And speaking as someone who has worked on running conferences before, it can be really fun to help out. You get to see what goes on "behind the stage" a bit and interact with the attendees in totally different ways.
