Hearts on Fire Series (original) (raw)

I watched as Kyla and her friend came up to me. I held Ari's hand tightly as my other one clenched open and close just as tight. Ari looked up at my hand holding hers and knew that this wasn't a good time for her to try to look around.

"Mommy?"

"It's ok, baby. Mommy's just going to have to take care of things."

The sound of Kyla's high heels echoed in my ears as she finally came to a stop in front of us.

"Well...hello there, Phoenix."

I nearly growled just hearing her voice. "Kyla."

Sweeping the gleaming rug of hair behind her shoulders, Kyla swept her eyes over me and then looked down at my daughter.

"You're looking...average." She smirked, taking in my red tank top and mini skirt.

My eyebrow raised, realizing that she was already trying to get to me.

"Well, not everybody can be as skanky rich as you, Kyla. You know, you surpass skanky." I replied in a soft voice. Kyla frowned and then her gaze landed on my ring finger. "Married Chaison?"

I nodded, raising my hand up and scratching my face to let the diamonds gleam against the sun and into her face. "Naturally. We realized that we were meant to be..."

Kyla huffed and after her friend asked her what coffee she wanted, she said "He could have done so much better."

Chuckling, I just watched Kyla as she attempted to hurt my feelings somehow.

It's too late for that, bitch...

"He doesn't think so. We're pretty happy."

Kyla rolled her eyes and then looked down at Ari. Ari scowled back up at her and cowered behind my leg as the adult came down to her level.

"Who is this? Your sister?"

I busted out laughing. "Oh, my God. Really? Look at that girl and tell me she doesn't look like him."

Kyla looked up at me and then at Ari and after seeing those dark brown eyes, she jumped up saying "You have a child too?"

"Yep, isn't life sweet?"

"As candy."
