Artificial Intelligence (AI) through Machine Learning (ML) along with Natural Language Processing... more Artificial Intelligence (AI) through Machine Learning (ML) along with Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technologies can read and understand texts, then extract important information from a document and check its compliance with other documents or set of laws or rules under predefined parameters which allows the system to interpret data and take decisions. Fintechs have developed AI-based software to take the checking role as a replacement for the current highly manual process of document examination under trade letter of credit (LC) process, which is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and requires skilled and experienced staff to examine the documents for compliance with the terms and conditions of the LC and applicable rules. This paper reports our preliminary studies in using AI and ML in document checking and examination. Specifically, we conducted experiments to compare AI and deep learning results with human checking experts' results. Our findings showed a significant reduction in errors and processing times using this automation and an increase in operational efficiency and optimization of resources. AI-based solution does not mean digitization as human intervention is still required for discrepancies articulated by the automated checks, but it is an important automation step that can assist in the development of hybrid solutions aligning paper to digital toward complete digitization of the trade process under the supply chain.

Therefore, identifying the issues faced by the pharmaceutical supply chain is essential to understand better and combat the drug counterfeited issues, which require technological implementation and their applications in various phases of the pharmaceutical supply chain to gain better visibility and ensure safety. In this regard, a review has been conducted to fulfill the following objectives: (i) Review the application of traceability technologies in various pharmaceutical supply chain phases to detect and solve counterfeit issues. (ii) Analyze the various barriers affecting establishing a safe pharmaceutical supply chain and the critical success factors to overcome those barriers. (iii) Develop a conceptual framework for showing the influence of technologies and success factors on overcoming the various barriers in different phases of the pharmaceutical supply chain. Recent statistics show that counterfeit drugs will continue to penetrate the legitimate pharmaceutical supply chains and target more significant patient segments. Furthermore, smugglers and counterfeiters will also continue to target all phases of the pharmaceutical supply chain. This study developed a conceptual framework for achieving a safe PSC by demonstrating the influence of traceability technologies and success factors on overcoming the various barriers in different phases of the PSC. The critical finding of this review was that the traceability technologies and the critical success factors have a significant influence on overcoming the barriers in establishing a safe PSC.

Efficient operations and maintenance of wastewater infrastructure heavily rely on material and equipment available at the right time in the right quantities. Therefore, making correct inventory management strategic decisions a paramount necessity to gain cost efficiencies. At present, a common practice in the industry for decision making is entirely dependent on the experience of the team or individuals in the decision-making process. In this research, strategic inventory management decision-making tools are developed for the wastewater utility industry. The tools include an inventory management maturity framework, a qualitative and quantitative material-specific inventory management sourcing policy selector. The maturity model developed takes into account criteria related to cost, culture, process, and technology from industry practitioners' experience and their envisioned future. The qualitative decision-making tool is demonstrated using sample data intended to be acquired from a global survey. The quantitative decision tool is demonstrated by performing economic assessment simulations of various scenarios, by investigating a case study for inventory management sourcing policies, using in-house and performance-based contracts for mobile flood mitigation pumps. The findings highlight the selection decision should be driven by forecasted equipment utilization. With a trend indicating lower utilization is economical with outsourcing through Performance Based Contract (PBC), while higher utilization is economical using the in-house option. At the same time, the cost parity point for the inventory management policies under investigation can vary according to the equipment output capacity, in this case, the flow rate. The tools developed in this research have the potential to be extended to other industries to assist in strategic decision making, where operations and maintenance works are performed.

However, the high demand, complexity, and stochasticity of the Outpatient Chemotherapy Process (OCP) can lead to inefficiencies in implementing these services. To address this gap in the literature, this study presents a decision support framework and operational model for optimizing the OCP with the inclusion of home-based and mobile chemotherapy services. Data-driven research and relevant literature have been integrated to formulate the decision-making process in the proposed decision support framework. A mathematical model is developed to determine the patient and nurse assignments to outpatient department, home, or mobile chemotherapy services, as well as appointment scheduling. A discrete event simulation model is employed to solve the proposed model and determine the performance measures. The optimization experiment included various demand scenarios, and the results showed the value of implementing home-based and mobile chemotherapy services on patient waiting time and staff overtime under all the considered scenarios compared to a baseline. Finally, implementation and modeling strategies have been proposed for scholars and decision-makers to build on this work and benefit from its findings.

Material handling equipment (MHE) is considered the pivotal actor of any given MHS. Decisions ranging from the strategic level, such as selecting the proper MHE, capacity, and ownership (in-house or outsourcing) to operational level decisions such as resource allocation, scheduling, and routing of MHEs, are critical to the efficiency of an MHS. Industry practitioners use various methods and tools to evaluate these MHSs to find the best policies for their operations. This study identifies past works related to the performance evaluation and optimisation of MHSs using queueing network models. Moreover, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of identified research questions. The study methodology adopts a systematic literature review, bibliometric, and content analysis techniques proposed in similar research studies. This study provides material logistics scholars and practitioners with a thorough understanding of queueing networks as a modelling tool for analysing MHS applications in various domains.
Carsharing has become increasingly popular in recent years as a sustainable transportation soluti... more Carsharing has become increasingly popular in recent years as a sustainable transportation solution, offering individuals access to shared vehicles on a short-term basis. One-way carsharing, in particular, presents unique challenges due to its flexible nature, allowing users to pick up and drop off vehicles at different locations within a designated service area. This flexibility increases the service ridership but comes at the expense of vehicle imbalance among the stations, as some stations may have excess vehicles while other stations have vehicle shortages. Therefore, carsharing companies need to decide on strategies to ensure a balanced distribution of vehicles among the stations. This is essential as unbalanced vehicle distribution can lead to the unavailability of vehicles when needed or, conversely, result in an increased number of unnecessary rebalancing trips, thereby exacerbating traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Such issues can potentially undermine the ove...

The steps to achieve the study’s objectives included: (1) identifying the importance of IFMs for infant nutrition and their risks; (2) establishing mitigation criteria for evaluating IFMSC’s performance to maximize quality; and (3) analyzing each mitigation criterion to maximize IFM safety. Based on pairwise comparisons by professionals in the food supply chain (FSC) of decision-making, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) mo...
