[ **mood** | sleepy ] ...A Helena fanatic moment... After spending the day with her, James and I had a small conversation that went something like this. James: There is something about Helena! Do you know what I'm talking about?Me: YES! OH GOD! YES!James : She's just so...Me: ...YES! Dearest Helena, master of haikus and singing along to 'Baby Got Back', thank you for being so indescribably magnificent and making everyone's day.(And I'm really excited to bring you to ball and wear a suit) |

Helena Martin in Concert | [19 Jun 2005|02:11pm] |

[ **mood** | musical ] I am happy to be the first to report here that Helena's March of Dimes benefit concert was beautifully amazing (But you all knew it would be anyway). When Basil and I got to the Greenwich Library, a whole group of us YPIers were there to cheer her on, and though she apparently wanted us to spread out in the seats, we just had to all sit together. Finally, SHE came onstage, looking beautiful in her dark dress and the way she carried herself and gave off waves of charisma and passion as she sang. She began the show with "Flyin'" by Regina Spektor with only stomping, clapping, and her gorgeous voice. Then she went to the piano for her song "Pine Needles", which I had not heard before but which made me tingle and want to start cheering before it was done. From that, she went directly into "The First", her stroke of genius from week II at YPI 2004. Then it was time for her version of "Hallelujah" (because everybody else did a cover for that song). She would later complain that she mixed up the words a little, but I didn't really notice because it was one of my favorite renditions of the song ever (right up there with Jeff Buckley in fact). This was followed by "Gold", which she dedicated to Cathleen because she was Helena's inspiration for the song. It was gorgeous and made me feel bubbly inside. Jack Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" was up next, which was probably the grooviest tune of the night. Then Helena's "Fire Hazard", another one I hadn't heard, really made my eyes watery and my hair stand on end, as did the next song. I obviously did not remember "Challenge the Sun" as well as I thought; it was no wonder she won the Best Singer/Songwriter award at Greenwich High's Composer Showcase with that one. She then played "Overture" from Prodigal Son and tried to finish with Regina Spektor's "Back of a Truck", but the standing ovation and shouts for an encore forced her to play "Walking By" by Something Corporate. After the official end of the concert, when we had all hugged and congratulated her in the foyer, we eventually got the janitor to unlock the piano so that Helena could play "Missed Me" (Dresden Dolls), "Oedipus (Regina), and "Truce" (The Dolls again). I really wanted to hear songs like "Week Two", "Life Without Life", and "Flight", but I suppose you can't have everything.Anyhoo, to sum up, it was an astounding evening of beauty, harmony, and multiple musical orgasms. We love you Helena. I look forward to seeing your name on a New York marquee. You blew everybody minds; I am positive of this. |

You all claim to be a fan of hers, but how do you measure up when it comes to the REAL TEST??? CONTEST RULES:1) It must be a limerick.
