Newbie Hello everyone! I'm your newest member (I hope). I must admit upfront that although I am polytheist, I follow the Roman traditions, not the Greek. Nonetheless, the Romans borrowed much of their, and now my, religion, rites, customs, et cetra from the Greeks. As such, you will forgive me as I prefer the Roman names.
Anyway, I have joined and am writing this as I am interested in connecting with other polytheists who share similar beliefs as I. So no Wiccans please :P

I've just posted a poll to my journel and I would really, really appreciate it if people answered it. It may seem that I'm joking but the existence and purpose of humankind has long been a subject I've dwelt on, indeed some people might even call it an obsession. I do value the opinions and insights of those on my FL and so would really like to see your opinions. You may also comment as you will as well.
This is for an article which I'm thinking of doing.

I’m in an unfortunate work situation right now and I was wondering if anybody had a ritual or sacrifice that they find effective for resolving this kind of thing. I’m in the habit of sacrificing a large coin by the roadside from time to time as an informal gesture of appreciation to Hermes, but generally I’m not a daily ritual kind of guy. What would you recommend for finding favour in seeking a better job or improving things in an existing job?

I always thought Io was pronounced eee-oh but I recently saw somewhere online where someone noted that it's pronounced yo.
Which is it?
Feel free to drop any sites with pronunciation guides, I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs a little direction. :o)

Hi.... I'm new, obviously. ...I had a few questions... I kinda feel weird posting here 'cause I'm sort of exploring religions. Christianity doesn't feel right to me right now... Sorry if I sound like an indecisive little kid (maybe 's 'cause I am an indecisive little kid XD) but I wanted to ask people who actually know what they're talking about. :0

I once saw a table of symbols associated with the Hellenic (or was it roman) gods; two of them - the symbols for male - the circle with the arrow, and the symbol for female, the circle with teh cross, represent Mars and Venus, or Ares and Aphrodite. Does anyone know of these symbols?
Were these alchemical symbols? Or were they used in a pre christian context?

The afterlife? So, what does everyone believe about the afterlife?
Do you believe in metampsychosis (reincarnation)?
Or do you believe that once you die, your fate will be to rest in Hades forever?
Or apotheosis, becoming one with the Gods?
Or do you think the soul disappears entirely?
Does every Hellenist have their own theory? Do organizations like Hellenion have a statement of belief about the afterlife (still looking)?

The ancient Greek Philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle studied the traditional ethics of their society and came up with a set of virtues or habits of character that were pretty much universally agreed upon. In Hellas, virtue or arete meant excellence, especially excellence regarding the end or goal of a thing. The excellence of a knife is the cutting and how well it did that. Anyway, for any of you that are interested in or practicising the Hellenic/Greek religion and you live in Southeast United States, I invite you to join either (or both) of the two groups we have created:

We are a group hoping to bring together Hellenes of the Southeastern United States. The actual explicit intentions of the group are still defining themselves, but we hope that this can grow to be a good place for community, networking, possible meet-ups, discussion, and the exchange of knowledge between those interested in or working the path of Greek religious spirituality (be it Hellenic Reconstructionism to other various forms of Hellenic polytheism). We also hope to perhaps one day do ritual(s) together as well, even perhaps form a Demos. We shall see.
