You can purchase a gift subscription at nytimes.com/subscription/gift.
You can only give someone a subscription they do not already have. For example, if your friend has a Games subscription, you can give them a Cooking or The Athletic subscription, but not Games or All Access (which includes Games).
To purchase a gift subscription, the gift purchaser must provide:
- The gift recipient’s email address
- The date the recipient will be informed of their gift. The date will default to today’s date if none is selected.
As long as the gift purchase is approved by the cardholder’s bank, an email notifying the recipient about their gift is sent on the date specified by the gift purchaser. If the purchase is declined, we will send a notification to the gift purchaser and the gift will not be delivered.
- Gift subscriptions are a one-time payment and nonrefundable.
- Gift recipients are not billed for the gift subscription for the duration of the gift subscription period. However, gift recipients can purchase their own separate subscription to the same product to extend access after the gift expires.
- If the status of your gift is Payment Failed in the Share the Times section of your Account, we were unable to process the payment. Please retry the purchase.
Note: For more information, please review the Terms of Sale. Additional or different terms may apply for complimentary gift subscriptions.
The value of any gift redemption code left unclaimed after one year from the date of delivery will be contributed to The New York Times Sponsor a Student Program. Contributed gift redemption codes are no longer redeemable.
Gift recipients receive their gift redemption code via email if the purchase is approved by the cardholder’s bank. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
- A gift order confirmation email is sent to gift purchasers after they complete the checkout.
- On the date specified during the purchase process, the gift is emailed to recipients with instructions on how to redeem it.
- A gift cannot be successfully redeemed if:
- The gift code is invalid
- The gift code has already been redeemed
- More than one year has passed since the gift has been delivered
- The email address the gift code is being redeemed with has an existing subscription which overlaps with the gift, e.g. user is attempting to redeem a Games gift when they already have a Games subscription
- For more information about how to redeem gifts, please visit Redeem Your Gift Subscription.
Note: For more information, please review the Terms of Sale. Additional or different terms may apply for complimentary gift subscriptions.
There are three ways you can renew a gift once it’s been redeemed by the recipient:
- Purchase another gift subscription. As long as the gift purchase is approved by the cardholder’s bank, an email notifying the recipient about their gift is sent on the date specified during your purchase.
- Select the Renew option in the Share the Times section of your account during the last two months before the gift expires.
- Select the renewal link in the gift subscription expiration date reminder email. Receipt of this email depends on your email settings.
If you renew the gift, the recipient will receive an email on the date selected with another gift code to redeem access for another year.
You can track and manage your gift subscriptions in the Share the Times section of your Account.
In this section you will be able to view:
- The type of gift subscription
- The status of the gift subscription
- The email address of the gift recipient
- The code to redeem the gift subscription once it’s been delivered
- Expiration date
- Past gifts
If you received an email that your gift subscription purchase was declined, we were unable to complete your purchase. As a result, we cannot email the recipient their gift. We encourage you to contact your bank to ensure there is no issue blocking the transaction on their end and then try the transaction again. Alternatively, you can try the transaction again with a different payment method.
