Gift Articles for New York Times Subscribers (original) (raw)
Learn how to use the gift article feature on NYTimes.com, the News app, and the Cooking app.
Subscribers can gift 10 gift News articles per month:
- On the 1st of every month, Subscribers’ gift articles reset to 10.
- When an article is gifted, recipients can read it with or without a subscription.
- Recipients have 30 days to read the article before access is revoked.
If your subscription includes Cooking, you also have the option to gift recipes. For more information on this, please reference Cooking Recipe Features in the Help Center.
If you are sending multiple gift articles to someone then consider gifting them a New York Times Gift Subscription.
To share a gift article:
- Select the Share full article button on the article page. On the iOS and Android apps this appears as a gift box icon.
- Select your sharing platform (Facebook, Instagram, link, etc.).
When you select the Share full article button:
- A panel will appear detailing how many gift articles you have available to share.
- Each time you select the button the number of gift articles will automatically decrease by one article—regardless of whether or not you ultimately share the article.
- You can share each gift article with multiple recipients without decreasing the number of gift articles available to you.
- Once you have gifted an article to any recipient, you will have the option to Share article again without decreasing the number of gift articles available to you.
- Gift articles can only be shared using the Gift button and the gift sharing options available. Articles cannot be gifted or shared using non-gift social sharing options, or by copying and pasting the article URL into a web browser.
Note: If the gift button does not display on your app, but does show up on NYTimes.com, you may be using an outdated version of the app and will need to update to the latest version.
Where can I view the status of articles I have gifted?
In this section, you will be able to view how many gift articles you have remaining for the month, and a section for Active Links and Expired Links.
Details about Gift Articles you have shared can be found in the News app on both iOS and Android devices, and on a web browser, however the experience differs slightly.
iOS News app:
- Navigate to Account by selecting You (the person icon) in the lower right corner
- Select the Settings (gear icon) in the top right
- Your shares will be visible at the top of the page; select View All Gift Articles to view the details and status of all articles gifted
Android News app:
- Starting from the Home page or the You tab, select the Settings (gear) icon
- In the Gift Shares section, select See all in Gift Shares
Web Browser:
- Navigate to www.nytimes.com
- Select the three horizontal lines in the top left corner of the screen
- At the bottom of the navigation bar, select More and then Gift Articles
What happens if I run out of gift articles to give?
When you have reached your gift article sharing limit, a message will display when you open the gifting panel that says you have shared 10/10 articles. The list of sharing options will not display below the message.
If you receive a gift article from a New York Times subscriber, you do not need to register or subscribe to The New York Times to read the article.
Note: Registering for a New York Times account or becoming a subscriber will provide you with access to more articles.
