The main sources for this study are Polybius and Livy. The basic problem with their narrative is that they do not seem to have much interest in war at sea, but concentrate on war on land and the deeds of certain commanders like Scipio Africanus. Most of Polybius' text is lost and where we can compare Livy's version with Polybius' original text, we can see how Livy has shortened the text and omitted many details. Polybius, on the other hand, was no marine historian either. As we can see in his description of the First Punic War, he cites things correctly from his sources but makes mistakes in analysing what happened, simply because he did not have practical experience or interest in seafaring. See C. STEINBY, The Roman Boarding-Bridge in the First Punic War. A Study of Roman Tactics and Strategy, Arctos 2000, p. 193-210, and Polybios Rooman laivaston kuvaajana, Dialogus-Historian taito; Matti Männikön juhlakirja, Turku 2002, p. 116-132, for a discussion on Polybius as marine historian. Basically, our sources do not tell the things we would want to know about the navies. 2 For instance J.H. THIEL, Studies on the History of Roman Sea-Power in Republican Times, Amsterdam 1946, passim.

Wardle demonstrates that, in its context within the Life, the section falls within Suetonius' discussion of the res urbanae and it should be seen as part of Augustus' public career as princeps and pontifex maximus rather than reflecting his private religious preferences. Wardle offers a sound discussion as regards Augustus' religious reforms mentioned by Suetonius, e.g. the sensible interpretation of sacerdotum et numerum et dignitatem sed et commoda auxit. David Hunt's paper, "Fellow-Servants of God: Roman Emperor and his Christian Bishops in the Age of Constantine", and David Noy's "Jewish Priests and Synagogue Officials in the Greco-Roman Diaspora of Late Antiquity" end the first part of the book. The second half covers priesthoods outside the Urbs, both in Italy and in several Roman provinces. In sum, this is an impressive and well-edited volume which no doubt will be of great interest, especially to those dedicated to the study of Roman religion.

Not everything went right in Schliemann's work. He was able to answer the question Ubi Troia fuit and paved the way for future scholars to continue excavations. Wilhelm Dörpfeld proved in work conducted in 1893-1894, just a few years after Schliemann's death, that the actual archaeological level that could be connected to a great destroyed city, on a site where people had lived for thousands of years, was level number six. Schliemann in his fervent attempts to find the city of Priam, had actually dug through this level, ending up in the early Bronze Age about one thousand years earlier. The book comes with maps and photos. An index would have been useful, given the great number of people and events discussed.
