| | Friday, December 16th, 2005 2:30 pm - Hello! ex_elusivesh428 I recently bought an 1853 vintage house in Van Buren, Arkansas and have set out to finish restoring it. It apparently housed many soldiers during the civil war and several prominent figures in the Van Buren community in it's better days. The previous owners had it for 18 years and did quite a bit of work on it, so now my husband and I basically get the 'pretty up' work. The original roof was replaced with a galvanized steel one, but other than that, most everything is original (with the exceptions of closets built by the former owner). It was once featured in the Frisco Railroad's publication for the local train station, some 4 blocks away. I'm quite excited about our new project, and thought I'd share! :)( Read more...Collapse ) current mood: grateful (8 comments | comment on this) Tuesday, June 14th, 2005 8:40 pm mort i love this house... and the paint job makes it that much better.also- just after i posted this pic to my own journal, i noticed a vaguely humanoid shape at the lower left-hand side. i can almost make out a young girl with long hair and a dress. she's facing the drainpipe. shall i cue the twilight zone theme ?here's a closer-up, darkened version: (3 comments | comment on this) Wednesday, March 2nd, 2005 1:46 pm - aluminum siding is the bane of my existence mort here's the exterior of our place (my fella and i live on the 3rd floor... our bedroom window's on the left; the other two are the living room.) the house was built in 1870. i'll post some interior shots when it's tidier. the metal stairs behind the lilac tree are like cheese graters... i live in fear of taking a tumble on them and losing half the skin on my legs.(pic taken last june. ahhh... i vaguely remember greenery !) I haven't had a chance to read the other entries here yet, but I found it by searching for interests of the 19th century genre. I am 25, but am obsessed (almost literally) with the 1890's specifically, but the 19th century in general. Currently I live in a home that was built in the early 20th century, and I have a fantastic clawfoot tub and pedestal sink that I adore :) I take vacations purposely to remote places that no one goes to just so that I can stay in an "old" hotel--- my friends think I am crazy.Glad to see there are other history buffs out there who love the "old" stuff :)current mood: chipper (comment on this) Friday, January 14th, 2005 3:49 pm mort the house is shaking. shaking ! the two chairs in the livingroom are rocking, squeaking frantically. the bookshelf's threatening to topple over.what the hell ?i live on the third floor of a four storey house that was built in 1870. the washer & dryer are located on this level, and sometimes cause the kitchen (with which the laundry room shares a wall) to shake. but nobody's washing. i don't hear footsteps upstairs or down. should i be scared ? I would really like to start a collection of vintage wallpaper scraps. I have some already from sites here in Paris but I'd love to have a collection from all over the world. If you're photographing an abandoned site and come across some peeling wallpaper or scraps of wallpaper (any size, even as small as 1"x1"), would you consider sending it to me? I would happily reciprocate with a postcard or something else cool from Paris! This is a serious request, please comment if you're interested. Thanks!Just to be fair, I'll post a photo, too. These are just a few, :)( here we go!Collapse )I think they're beautifully designed, there is a strong German influence in this part of the county, the other half is mostly occupied by Orthodox Jews and they have actually the most beautiful of the local heritage homes in this area! I hope it picks up a bit. I work seasonally at a historic village (Historic Richmondtown to be precise). It's small but has a lot of great things. Many have reported "unusual sightings" but I personally haven't seen so much as felt things. If anytime you're in NYC, I recommend you visit. The houses are beautiful but aren't being used to their full potential. Budget cuts and under-staffing, mostly. Most of the buildings are actually used for storage of artifacts rather than being open for visitation. Still, being an insider it let's me see things untainted by heavy traffic, so it's great for me. Perhaps if I can get pictures soon (I'm at college in a different state right now) I'll post them.
