The wind-farm power generation has received a considerable attention for its significant impact on the power system voltage stability. The paper discusses the impact of integrating wind farms using doubly-fed induction generators (DFIG) on the western Algerian power-system operation for this proposes. The wind farms have been installed at different buses to determine their best location and to optimize their power. The maximum loading factor in the power system is determined based on the P-V curves. The simulation results obtained by using the Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) show that the wind farms can be effectively used to enhance the static-voltage stability and increase the network loadability margin.

At present, it still relies on the classical numerical integration methods which are accurate but time consuming for large power systems. This paper proposes Gear's method and the block method to reduce the computational cost. These methods are used to simulate the IEEE 39 Bus system. The classical model representation of the power system is used here. To verify their effectiveness a comparison to Runge-Kutta 4th order method, which is one of the most used methods to solve the problem is done. The Gear and block methods are found to be very accurate with less computational time than the classical Runge-kutta method. The results obtained are conclusive and satisfying.

The equality constraints of power balance and the inequality generator capacity constraints are considered. The CEED problem is a bi-objective non linear optimization problem since it is obtained by considering both the economy and emission objectives. This bi-objectives problem is converted into a single objective function using a price penalty factor approach. In this paper AG and HNN are tested on six generators system and the results are compared. The solutions are quite encouraging and useful in the CEED.

The HSA is simple in concept, few in parameters and easy in implementation. Moreover, it does not require any derivative information. These features increase the applicability of the HSA, particularly in power system applications, where the problems have a large amount of variables and constraints. In this paper, a Fast method based on Harmony Search Algorithm (FHSA) for solving Economic Dispatch (ED) problem is proposed. The performance of FHSA is investigated and compared with HSA, Improved HSA (IHSA), Global HSA (GHSA) and Matpower method. Numerical results reveal that FHSA can find optimum solutions with reduced number of “improvisations” when compared to the other methods.

Research paper thumbnail of Hooke-Jeeves' Method Applied to a New Economic Dispatch Problem Formulation

Journal of Information Science and Engineering, 2008

The Economic Dispatch Problem (EDP) is one of the important optimization problem in a power syste... more The Economic Dispatch Problem (EDP) is one of the important optimization problem in a power system. Traditionally, in EDP, the cost function for each generator has been approximately represented by a single quadratic function. The main aim of EDP is to minimize the total cost of generating real power while satisfying the equality constraints of power balance and the inequality generator capacity constraints. In this paper a New Economic Dispatch Problem Formulation (NEDPF) has been proposed to solve EDP. This new formulation is based on the reduction of the number of variables (number of generators) and elimination of the equality and inequality constraints, thus the transformation of the constrained non linear programming problem to an unconstrained one. The new unconstrained objective function, is minimized by Hooke-Jeeves' method. The NEDPF was tested for different cases (2, 3 and 6 generator units) and the results are judged satisfactory.

DED is solved by Harmony Search algorithm (HS). HS is a newly-developed meta-heuristic algorithm that uses a stochastic random search. It is simple in concept, few in parameters and easy in implementation. The simulations are realized by considering first the western Algerian power system as it is (WA: 2003 data), then the western Algerian electrical power system with the injection of wind farm energy (Western Algerian power system + Wind energy WAW). The results are compared in production cost and harmful emissions (CO 2). After a theoretical introduction of the problem formulation and the harmony search algorithm, a description of the site and the wind farm is presented, followed by a discussion of the simulation results.

The equality constraints reflect a real power balance, and the inequality constraints reflect the limits of real generation. The voltage levels and security are assumed to be constant. The problem is solved by a Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique (SUMT) algorithm which was developed by Fiacco and McCormick. Combined economic emission dispatch problem is obtained by considering both the economy and emission objectives. This bi-objective problem is converted into a single objective function using a price penalty factor. In this paper SUMT method is tested on three generators system and its results are compared with the solutions obtained in [1]. The results are quite encouraging and useful in the economic emission environment.
