Therefore, for learners of foreign language studies in these levels, once they graduate, they are expected to not only advance in the production of language, but also be proficient in linguistic analysis aspects. To produce graduates of foreign language studies with qualities of critical analytical reasoning, education institutions have provided courses related to linguistic theories such as phonology, phonetics, morphology, syntax and semantics. These theories are fundamental to help students analyze various language phenomena in their resected fields. However, in many cases, linguistic theory in undergraduate level courses seem to be limited to very basic theories that have not yet covered more contextual aspects. The result then, is that linguistic theories become vague and distance to new learners, and it becomes difficult to prove that learning them is significant in achieving graduates with qualities of critical analytical reasoning. As a response to these problems, the Japanese Studies Program of the Faculty of Humanities University of Indonesia (FIB-UI) felt the need to plan a new course that allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in a more approachable context. Therefore, since the second semester of the 2012 academic year, the Japanese Studies Program of FIB-UI introduced a new course on Japanese Language Discourse. This course is aimed to develop students’ ability to analyze various linguistic phenomena in Japanese society. At the start of this course, discussion topics were limited to discourse theories implemented in Japanese written text. Along the years, the course has developed to equip students with critical discourse analysis and sociolinguistic theories. Students are also encouraged to apply the theories they have learnt in simple linguistic researches. The aim is to foster the sharpness of thinking and the ability to propose critical analysis. By using the final assignment of the Japanese Language Discourse Study course in the second semester of the 2016/2017 academic year, this paper intends to show how far Japanese Language Discourse has succeeded in increasing students' critical analytical reasoning. Keywords: critical analytical reasoning, higher education, Japanese language discourse analysis

Previously, the city hosted the 1964 Olympics. This historical background generated nostalgia for the 1964 Olympics ahead of the 2020 Olympics. The 1964 Olympics are remembered for exposing Japanese society to various interactions with foreigners, which eventually provided the setting for expressions of Japanese national identity through comparisons between "us" (Japanese) and "them" (foreigners). In this sense, representations of foreigners, and their roles as essential elements of Japanese national identity discourse, have been the integral parts of 1964 Olympics nostalgia. Ahead of the 2020 Olympics, numerous popular culture forms depicting the 1964 Olympics were produced in Japan. One notable work was the television drama IDATEN Orimupikku Banashi (hereafter: IDATEN), broadcast by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) from January-December 2019. This is evident in the depiction of the clash between the two in various stories of the Japanese Military Occupation Period in Indonesia, as well as in Indonesian Islamic literary works until the 2000s. However, through her Islamic-romantic novel "Akatsuki" (2009, 2012, 2017) Muliyatun N., by creating a story that entirely takes place in Japan and with all Japanese characters, depicts Japanese culture and Islamic values relations as non-oppositional and nonconfrontational. This paper first describes the depiction of Japanese culture-Islamic values relations within "Akatsuki". Furthermore, by considering contexts lingering the production of the novel, it analyzes how the "Akatsuki" marks the shift in Indonesian Muslim's perception towards Japan in the decade of 2010s. My argument is that this shift is in line with the trends of creating a global and successful image of Muslims through literary works, and the recent development of the relationship between Japan and Islamic world.
