Two groups were surveyed: parents of hospitalized children, and staff caring for them. Vignettes were used to invoke discussion, and content analysis was used to examine the data. Subjects were interviewed singly, or in focus groups. These interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. The data were explored by using content analysis to extract themes of understanding of cultural experiences. This article is the first of a two-part series, and includes a review of the literature, description of the methods used, and results of the parents' interviews. The staff results and discussion will be published in Part 2. Analysis revealed that parents in all countries were primarily concerned with treating the child's illness and the child's recovery. Parents were concerned with their work (employment), but this was a much larger consideration in Indonesia and Thailand, where no social security systems exist, than in Australia and Britain. Communication with staff was the most commonly mentioned theme for parents, indicating that irrespective of the culture in which the care was given, good communication between parents and staff was of paramount importance.

C'Unirai trials have demonstrated that it lacks antitumor activity in its own right. In this review, the mechanism of action and rationale for the use of thymidine as a biochemical modu lator of standard agents such as 5-fluorouracil, l-/3-r>arabinofuranosylcytosine, and methotrexate are summarized. With this background, the clinical trials which have been conducted with thymidine, either alone or in combination, are described. We suggest a number of further studies of the role of thymidine in the biochemical modulation of antimetabolites.

There is a lack of information describing the process and results of tapering of chronic opioids. The purpose of this study is to describe opioid tapering and withdrawal symptoms in fibromyalgia patients on opioids. This retrospective research study included a baseline analysis of 159 patients consecutively admitted to the Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center from 2006 through 2012 with a pain diagnosis of fibromyalgia completing a 3-week outpatient interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation program. Opioid tapering analysis included 55 (35%) patients using daily opioids. Opioid tapering was individualized to each patient based on interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation team determination. Opioid withdrawal symptoms were assessed daily, utilizing the Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale. Patients taking daily opioi...

Each of 66 male rats received a closed, nondisplaced femoral fracture and was fed rofecoxib, ibuprofen, or placebo for 4 weeks. Results of postsacrifice evaluation showed gross nonunions in 64.7% of rofecoxib rats (P < .0001), 17.6% of ibuprofen rats (P = .007), and 0% of placebo rats. Compared with ibuprofen, rofecoxib was significantly more likely to produce nonunions (P = .007). Mean callus width was 8.9 mm (SD, 1.3 mm) for rofecoxib (P = .03), 8.9 mm (SD, 1.2 mm) for ibuprofen (P = .03), and 8.0 mm (SD, 1.3 mm) for placebo. Mean healing maturity (Goldberg classification) was 1.6 (SD, 0.7) for rofecoxib (P < .0001), 1.7 (SD, 0.8) for ibuprofen (P = .0001), and 2.7 (SD, 0.6) for placebo. Mean fracture angulation was 30.8 degrees (SD, 16.7 degrees) for rofecoxib (P = .003), 14.3 degrees (SD, 14.4 degrees) for ibuprofen (NS), and 13.4 degrees (SD, 10.3 degrees) for placebo. Mean histologic healing was 5.75 for rofecoxib (P = .02), 6.35 for ibuprofen (P = .05), and 8.25 for placebo. Cox-2 inhibitors should be used with caution when bone healing is necessary. Further study is warranted to determine whether the adverse effects occur in humans.

Each county has a different stratification, and the stratification may differ depending on the number of panels of data available. A "5 by 5 sum" filter was passed over the reclassified forest/nonforest Multi-Resolution Landscape Characterization image used in Phase 1, generating an image in which each pixel represents the count of forested pixels inside a 5 by 5 window.

Major increases in program performance included the availability of plot data and the plots' corresponding approximate coordinates. A mill site study and biomass models were used to compare actual versus approximate coordinates. The protocols used to protect the privacy of private forest landowners did not meaningfully alter the results. A new strategic plan for FIA will be developed for 2007-12. Through meetings with partners and customers, FIA will evaluate opportunities to broaden the information collected and analyses of this data.
