It is an opera after Gluck’s opera reform. This essay will compare the recorded stage performance produced by The Metropolitan Opera released in 2000, and the film production by Joseph Losey released in 1979.

The symphonies by Mahler are huge, gigantic, and yet very narrative. The first symphony though is... more The symphonies by Mahler are huge, gigantic, and yet very narrative. The first symphony though is not well received in its premiere , his wife Alma loved it. Though it was Mahler’s very first attempt in the genre, it shows maturity in writing a symphonic work. And most importantly, the symphony is joyful, somewhat programmic , and end in grand triumph. The sixth was in fact composed in probably Mahler’s happiest time in his life, yet the music shows a doomed fate as the title says, “Tragic”.

Both works were written for large orchestra. Although Mahler himself was an atheist, he is a believer of fate; also his love towards Alma. These two had greatly affect Mahler’s musical creation and thus the music had directly affect Mahler’s thinking and ideas towards life. This essay will compare the course of composing the symphony, the instrumentation, and the style; and link the above to Mahler’s life as much as possible.
