The Hogwarts Spirit Club (original) (raw)

Tamara (epheme) and myself have been discussing the idea of a Quidditch Tournament sponsored by The Hogwarts Spirit Club. Since we both feel we're making some progress, but everything being said is in a comment, we wanted to sum it all up and bring it to the public to read. :) Here we go; I hope I don't forget anything. :P
Basically, we wanted a way to play Quidditch. Originally, this was a suggestion to rawtoast's idea that we have a contest that supports a House-wide effort. We wanted to get the entire house involved and then award the winner with a new layout for their Common Room.
Our idea of Quidditch concerns using trivia questions as the "game". Each week, one house will have an "off" week and will be in charge of making questions for the others to "play". The other houses will have a certain amount of time to complete the questions and then the one with the most correct will win that week's "game". However, and this just came to me ... What do we do about ties and tie-breakers? Hmm. See, this is why we need all of your help!
Anyways, we can either do 3 games for each team and 1 off week each, or 6 games and 2 off weeks where they're in charge of the trivia questions.
We're also concerned with the fairness of it all. We can either do A.) teams of a certain number -OR- B.) the entire house competing against the other houses.
The Pros of Each
A.) Really fair, since each team will have the same amount of players.
B.) Our original aim is met. This will include a house-wide effort.
B.) This may encourage participation in Common Rooms.
B.) There's no worry about participation, in theory. With the entire house working on things, if someone can't/doesn't want to participate that week, then there's the rest of the house to cover for them.
The Cons of Each
A.) If there are only 2 volunteers from a certain house, then that means we have to cut the numbers down to 2 for the other houses. Hopefully, this wouldn't happen, but it's a possibility - and 2 isn't exactly the house-effort we were looking for.
A.) There's no "Captain" so to say. For B.) we'd count on the prefects to keep things organized and arranged.
B.) The difference between numbers/participation in each house
B.) Active/willing prefects?
This is for the Liaisons - could you please report back to your houses and get their opinions on this? Would they be interested in playing Quidditch? Would they want a team or house-effort competition? Etc.
Also, there are concerns about the Quidditch Cup taking away from the House Cup. Personally, I think everyone's main objective is to win the House Cup and the Quidditch Cup will only add to it, not take away from it. Also, and maybe I'm just assuming, but doesn't the Quidditch Cup count towards House Cup points in the book? If so, we could award, I dunno, 50-200 points for winning the Quidditch Cup. Something big, I think, since it'll take a lot of time and effort.
We also think that two-plus people from hogwarts_spirit should run this, since we ARE sponsoring it. :P I know I'd be more than happy to do this, and Tamara too, maybe? Any other volunteers?
... I think that's up. And onto some points I just thought up:
How many questions should we ask the Teams to make for the "Games"? I'd like it to be a larger number, but would the Teams be willing to make up 50 trivia questions? Which brings me to another point ... I have a Harry Potter trivia book, and I'm sure others do too. Instead of having off weeks, we could have referees (anyone who owns Trivia books) who make up the questions for all the houses. I know my book is arranged in Easy/Medium/Hard so we can mix it up and there's less chance of a tie.
Also, we could go even further and organize things to the point where we have positions. This would work for the Teams, and we could adjust it to work for a whole house effort. There are PLENTLY of ways Quidditch is played. I'm sure we all have heard of and participated in these many versions and could come up with something.
Oh boy, now it's getting even more complicated. :P
But, that's it! Tamara, let me know if I missed anything. Also, everyone else, let us know what you think - questions, concerns, opinions, suggestions, etc. We really would like your input. :D
