I contend that the notion of an all-encompassing system of military discipline is a fiction created by a variety of interconnected and historically-constructed intellectual genealogies by examining the two most important sources for the discipline of Middle Republican army, Polybius and Livy, and the reception of their ideas in post-Renaissance Europe.

Taking my inspiration from post-colonial theories of popular power, I contend that we should not understand acts of collective resistance in military settings as simple events activated by a singular cause, but rather as expressions of individual and collective grievances with the status quo. Indeed, the variant practices of military recruitment in the Late Republic, and the exploitative nature of Rome’s imperial rule put oppressed groups – Italians, provincials, and former slaves – in constant contact with the state apparatus. Thus, military service offered an essential space for political action in the first century BC. These findings help us to better understand how popular power could be realized beyond traditional institutional settings in this period.

To do so, I examine Total War: Rome II as another moment in the long reception history of Arminius and the Battle of Teutoberg Forest.

It argues that the Romans revived the victoriatus in the 170s BCE to supplement coloniza-tion efforts in the region. Although the victoriatus was falling out of favor elsewhere, the coinage was used in Northern Italy in lieu of the denarius for two reasons. Not only did the victoriatus fit the metrological standards of the coinage already circulating in the region, but it was also used as a commodity in places that were not yet monetized.

years as well as the results of a mailed survey from authors who have published in the journal for the last 50 years to interrogate demographic changes in our field. By tracking class, gender, race, and immigration status of TAPA authors, we assess the progress that has been made as represented by the public scholarly face of the Society of Classical Studies since 1869. Yet, we also show that progress has been slow and that the position of classicists from marginalized groups has always been precarious. Further, certain groups, particularly persons of color, are still notably under-represented in the marketplace of ideas represented by TAPA.

I argue that the Romans revived the victoriatus specifically for usage in Northern Italy to serve as a transitional currency in support of Roman colonization efforts in the region. Further, I claim that it was the flexibility of the victoriatus, when compared with the denarius, that made it the ideal currency for Roman colonies in the region.
