Areté

Welcome to the MTSU Honors College Magazine: Areté

The annual magazine of the University Honors College began in 1974 and has formerly published two magazines each year. The magazine has undergone several name changes throughout the College’s history. In 1974, it was first published as Honors in Perspective and was later renamed The Honors Alternative, The Honors Edition, and The Honors Magazine. In 2017, the University Honors College magazine was renamed Areté, a term borrowed from the Greeks defined as excellence and virtue.

For many years, the magazine was edited by the former Honors executive secretary Karen Demonbreum. From 2008-2022, Marsha Powers, Honors College coordinator of unique projects and publications, served as editor. Robin E. Lee is the current editor and also serves as an advisor to both Collage and Scientia et Humanitas.
