G'day. I'm Brock, well, Brock is a fictional character who lives on the internet, which is OK because in Real Life I'm a fictional character.

I am less Goth than you.

I am neopagan, geeky and queer. I have been watching Anime since about 1970. Yes, I am Crusty-[subculture], I am over 40.

Over the next few months some friends and I will be starting a business in Australia's second largest inland city (don;t get excited, that's 100,000 people) with a strong orientation to the web.

We will make whatever will sell. Yes, we are not proud Artistes, but we are cunning, yes my pretties. There will be investment in a different trademark for the Kitsch and Krappy, so as not to pollute the reputation and purity of our hybrid goth/(neo)pagan/steampunk/cthulu/geek/otaku premium lines. Krap we will make though, if someone will exchange money for it.

We will also do cosplay and costumes and clothing, but our focus is accessories, buttons and shiny bits. Halloween is not a big thing in Australia. Here and there, now and then it generates a bit of interest, but the Little Church of the Holy Dollar tend to come down hard on it. So we miss the horror retailers equivalent of Xmas.

So, much of what I say here will need warnings "May Not Apply in certain strange jurisdictions".

I'll be looking for techniques, markets, opportunities to wholesale and retail, and other people who understand the desire to build full size working zombie animatrons on a shoestring while selling size XXXXXL Naughty Nurse costumes to men who insist their wife has the same measurements as them.

Oh, and scale wares. Dolls accessories, clothing, furniture. I haven't found a single retailer of high class 1/6 (Barbie) scale coffins for example...

Missed last month's Friday the 13th sale? Here, have another:

13th Floor Productions produces gothic, alternative and horror greeting cards. They feature custom art and text at a very reasonable price. You can purchase the cards at Amalthea's Attic.

I was told when you have a business you must pay quite alot of fees to companies like Visa and Mastercard when you accept those cards as a method of payment. How much is the fee? Is it for a full year or a percentage every transaction? Is it worth it to accept this kind of payment? And is it complicated to do(like to receive the payment from the buyer)?

TheZombified.com is back online!

The Zombified is an alternative online store featuring original Halloween and horror inspired artwork for the darkly inclined

T-Shirts
Comic Books
Pocket Mirrors
Pins / Buttons
Greeting Cards
...and more

I run- or I suppose "will be running" might be more accurate- a business called The Zombified, which will offer my original artwork in a variety of incarnations, including but not limited to t-shirts, cards, pins/buttons (whatever you prefer to call them), pocket mirrors, etc etc. I'm also in the midst of writing a comic book series entitled Hallowhaus, about a girl risen from the grave one Halloween night, which will also be available on my website. I'll be selling almost exclusively online, with the exception of vendoring at the occasional relevant convention (I'm already booked for Fear Fest 3 in Dallas this year), and I'll be contacting individual comic shops myself- starting local to me- in hopes of them agreeing to carry Hallowhaus.

My business is extremely important to me, and making it a success has become something of an obsession- I feel I need to be able to do this for a living, as I'd likely be miserable doing anything else. I am entirely self-funding The Zombified, which does make things progress a fair bit more slowly than I'm happy with, and I try to do as much as I can to avoid outsourcing (for example, I hand screenprint the t-shirts myself). I spend a great deal of my free time reading small business forums, blogs, and other sources, and if I talked about my business half as much as I thought about it, I'd be driving everyone around me insane (which naturally brings me to the creation of horror_biz).

horror_biz is a community for entrepreneurs and artists to discuss all aspects of starting and running a darkly inclined, horror-or-Halloween-inspired business.

The main purpose of this community is for discussion and the exchange of ideas, experiences, and information. For now, promotions are allowed in posts, until I feel that that privilege is being abused. Please keep this in mind whilst posting and make an effort to contribute to discussion as opposed to only promoting your business. Members who only post advertisments will be removed from the community.

All images should be placed behind an LJ-Cut

A certain level of civility among members is expected. Criticism- though welcome- should at least be constructive. Try not to be a jerk.

For the sake of inspiring some start-up activity-- a list of potential discussion topics:

Starting a business
Website creation and critique
Legal issues and requirements
Advertising, PR, and promotion
Resources and helpful hints
Pricing and packaging
Shipping
Balancing your business and "real life"
Taking photos of your product(s)
Selling at fairs and conventions
Your creative process (and overcoming that damn artists' block)

As always, feel free to introduce yourself in a new post!
