hp_feminism - Profile (original) (raw)

on 25 April 2005 (#6920027)

hp_feminism is a community for the discussion of feminism as it relates to the world of Harry Potter.

Let's talk about the representation of women in Goblet of Fire. Let's talk about female sexuality in erotic fanfic. Let's talk about what it's like to be a feminist negotiating a canon constructed through the eyes of a teenage boy. Let's talk about the maternal image of Molly Weasley versus that of Petunia Dursley. Let's talk about body politics and Nymphadora Tonks. Let's talk about promoting positive images of women in the fandom.

But let's get talking.

Let's create dialogue. Let's discuss. Let's deconstruct.

Community Guidelines

First and foremost, be respectful! Not everyone in this community is going to agree. Accept that feminism comes in many shapes and sizes, and accept that just because someone may disagree with you, that doesn't make his or her viewpoint or his or her experience less valid. Operate with inclusion in mind.

No flaming! Personal attacks will get you banned. Attack an argument if you disagree with it, but don't get personal. Ideas can suck, people cannot.

Love the lj-cut. Please put any and all large images, images or posts containing graphic content, community advertisements (see below), surveys (also see below), and long posts behind a lj-cut with a descriptive label. The members of this community with dial-up connections and huge friends lists will thank you.

Memes, surveys, quizzes and advertisements are best reserved for your personal journals. Memes and quizzes should never be posted to this community, period. If you want to post surveys or advertise another community that you think is relevant to hp_feminism, please ask the moderators. If a survey or a comm ad is posted without permission from one of the moderators, the post will be deleted. If this becomes a recurring thing, more action will be taken.

However, recommendations of fanfiction and fan art related to hp_feminism are encouraged when the recommendation is accompanied by commentary or discussion relevant to the community. The moderators reserve the right to delete a post containing a recommendation if it is clear that the intent of the post is not to generate discussion, but instead to merely promote said fanfic or art. Please be smart about this. There are lots of women-positive fics and art out there, and we would be happy to see them discussed and shared, but we don't want this community to turn into a reccing comm. Other communities are specifically designed for such. Not us.

Membership is open to all. You don't have to pass a test or belong to a certain school of thought. We just ask that you are interested in Harry Potter and can engage in civilized discussion of feminism with an open mind. Oh, and follow the rules.
