The accession of Hirohito in 1928 shined a spotlight on the Japanese monarchy and the myths surrounding it, bringing once again to the fore the question of whether Japan was a modern nation. Japan’s expanding influence in Manchuria also attracted attention, though unwanted, to its empire.

Without her leadership, this book would never have been produced or published. Sharon initiated this project as director of the Center for Japanese Studies by organizing a conference at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa called "Crossroads Hawai'i" in 2001. She also contacted the University of Hawai'i Press about publishing the papers from that conference and began turning these conference papers into a book. But Sharon did much more than just organize the conference that produced this book. She was a friend, a superb mentor, and a great teacher. She was a wonderful colleague. Tireless and committed, Sharon gave of her time selflessly. Our deepest thanks to her. u

As the bomb exploded, the railway, which was built and owned by the Japanese, suffered miniscule damage. Within hours the railroad was repaired and working, transporting Japanese troops to invade Manchuria under the pretext of putting down the Chinese bandits who had supposedly blown up the railroad. Later the next day, reporters were allowed to photograph the blown railroad tie and piece of rail. The damage to the rail was no more than eighteen inches long. This small explosion started a huge conflagration, the event some scholars in Japan such as Saburo Iyenaga have defined as the beginning of the Pacific War.

The new edition employs current scholarship on the subject, while addressing recent developments. The treatment of indigenous agency has been expanded throughout, including the major role played by Polynesians in the spread of Christianity in Oceania that has often been under-represented in historical surveys which focus on Western missionary societies and the activities of their missionaries. Chapter ten on immigration to Europe after World War II has been updated to reflect the refugee crisis and the evolving political situation in Europe concerning its immigrant population. The discussion questions at the end of each chapter, which provide an excellent way to get the students into group discussions, have been updated. Readers of the first edition have valued the manner in which its chapters are enlivened with the voices and views of those who were and remain directly engaged in the process of cross-cultural exchange from 1500 to the present. This edition is designed to build upon that achievement.
The Limits of Westernization: American and East Asian Intellectuals Create Modernity, 1860-1960, 2019
The rise of East Asia from the ashes of World War II in the late twentieth century has led to sea... more The rise of East Asia from the ashes of World War II in the late twentieth century has led to searching questions about the role the region will play in the world. The possibility that China will overtake the United States as a superpower suggests the twenty-first century could become an Asian century. Given the dynamism of a new Asia and the continuing power of the United States in the world, this study provides a crucial analysis of the origins and development of modern thought in the United States and East Asia.
While a strong literature on postwar modernization exists, there is a gap in the prewar origins and development of modern ideas. Influential intellectuals on both sides of the Pacific shaped perspectives on the concept of progress and rejection of the old order, the new domain of science, racism, and the importance of civic duty in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
This volume also reevaluates the influence of the United States on East Asia in the twentieth century and gives greater voice to East Asians in the growth of their own ideas of modernity. American-centric interpretations of the American role in East Asia emerged after World War II in the work of the historians John Fairbank and Edwin Reischauer, who together constructed a narrative history of East Asia, arguing that modernity in East Asia resulted from American influence. After this positive view of modernization became discredited in the 1970s, other scholars began to look at Western influence in a darker vein as cultural imperialism.
The analysis of this book suggests that a third turn in the historiography may be needed. In short, we may have overstated Western and American influence in East Asia, both positive and negative.
