_1:27 pm_[writersblock_va] Jamestown Pie Company From the email I just sent to the company: I’ve just finished what is probably the last meal I will ever have at your Newport News location. My wife and I have tried your establishment here in the office park a few times now, and while service has been pretty slow on a consistent basis, our experience today pretty much topped them all. My wife and I stopped in for lunch with my daughter, and we basically spent an hour waiting for our entire order. An HOUR wait, for a meal for 3, in a restaurant that had at most 10 customers in it, is completely ridiculous. Frankly, your establishment has consistently given my wife and I the WORST service of any place we go to eat in the Hampton Roads area. Our waitress, Stephanie, didn't write our orders down, got 2 orders WRONG a total of 3 times. And as we suggested as we left, supplying your wait staff with pens and order pads so they can write down orders, and get them correct would probably be a huge help to your service to future customers. The service was INCREDIBLY Slow. When we walked in, there were no more than 6 customers in the store. A table of 3 came in after us, and got up and LEFT because they didn't even get drinks served to them. For my daughter, we ordered a Cheese pizza with black olives. My wife ordered the crab cake sandwich, and I asked for a Philly Cheese steak, no mushrooms, no green peppers, add black olives. When the Pizza came, no Black olives. It was sent back and they put olives on it for us. The Crab cake sandwich came, and while the sandwich was ok otherwise, the buns were cold as if they'd just been pulled out of a refrigerator. My order took 45 min to get to me. A Philly Cheese steak. How does this take >45< min. to serve? Plus, when it did arrive, it was wrong. What I got was a Chicken Cheese steak, No Black Olives. We sent it back as well to be fixed. A second waitress Alexis? Came by to check on our order and we could hear her re-reiterate my order to whomever was cooking, because apparently it went in as a standard Philly the 2nd time. After a total of being in the restaurant for an HOUR, I finally got my sandwich. Which left me just enough time to take it in a to-go box and head back to work. Alexis was nice enough to take the Philly off our order so we didn’t have to pay for it. At most there were 10 other people in the restaurant while we were there. I honestly don't know how the Newport News location stays open with this level of service. Speaking with my coworkers afterward, four other people (out of an office of 20) have expressed the same complaint, incredibly slow service. (Comment on this)

_9:12 pm_[writersblock_va] *blows dust off community* Hey Look! A Review! My wife and I ate at the Hampton location of "BD's Mongonlian Grill"http://www.gomongo.com/Now for some reason we'd gotten the impression it was a little more high-end, and its possible we confused this place w/ another asian style eatery in the new mall there in Hampton. But BD's is NOT upscale. Its not BAD, but its more cafeteria style, few booths, mostly individual tables.Prices range from 8$ or so for vegetarian only, to 14$ for all you can eat bowls. They've got seperate facilities for cooking for folks w/ allergies.Anyway, BD's has a MUCH nicer selection in the various meats and pasta, LOTS of veggies, and about 12-15 sauces to pour over your food. Plus a whole bunch of other dry spices to include as well.I especially liked that they had a number of recipe cards on a board, so you could mix a certain dish without a lot of guesswork if you've never tried Mongolian before. In general, we liked it. My wife liked it more than I did, but she was also a little more creative when mixing the sauces, and I was sticking more to the cards. I kinda felt like the various sauces lacked a little kick in flavor, but maybe I just needed to add more, or different spices. The selection of meats and vegetables tho? Fantastic. I've NEVER seen Duck served anywhere around here other than Crackers (the Tapas bar). All in all, I give it a 3 out of 5, my wife would probably say a 4 our of 5. (Comment on this)

_2:14 pm_[faux_pseudo] Review: Aloha Hawaiian BBQ Aloha Hawaiian BBQThis was posted from my phone so may contain spellng errors.5260 Princess Anne Rd, Va Beach, This place is not really a Hawaiian BBQ place. I has that but it also has Thai and Chinese food. Its more like an Asian Pacific cafe covering your needs for Kalua pork, Red Cury and Tom Yum Goong all in one centrally located place. Since I have lived here I have tried to find something that looked and tasted like real chinese food. We have some good Viatnamese places but until I found this place I hadn't been able to get Chinese food that wasn't so tainted by Amarican ideas of what Chinese food is that it wasn't worth eating. This place solves that need. It dosn't have everything but it has enough to keep my taste buds happy. The staff is friendly and very willing to help you figure out what you need to help fill your craving. Maybe one day I will crave Hawaiian BBQ but for now the Thai and Chinese is keeping me busyl (1 Comment |Comment on this)
_12:54 pm_[faux_pseudo] Review: Lil Red Riding Hood I keep telling myself that I am going to write reviews of food places here but never do.Well here is one.Lil Red Riding Hood Cafe & Catering5719 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach, VA, 23462A year ago this location was yet another unremarkable hot dog place in the area. A little cleaner than most but not great. Now it is a dinner with amazing food. You can get the menu here: http://www.lrrhood.com/cafe_menuI had the pastrami. It says "New York Pastrami" but it is more southern than that. After 5 years of living here I finally found just a month ago I had a good pork bbq sandwich with slaw on it. I became a believer. This pastrami had slaw on it. It was awesome! This place isn't a greasy spoon. It is very good though :) They even have vegetarian items on the menu.Go there, try it. Good stuff. I think I will go right now. (Comment on this)

_8:08 pm_[faux_pseudo] cheap duck The food court at Lynnhaven mall has what I think is the cheapest duck in town. The Duck Noodle is $7.50 and comes with sliced duck breast in it. This place is a hole in the wall in the middle of a busy war zone and well worth checking out for cheap pho, udon and other south asian foods of the people.Any one here know of other hole in the walls or if there is a place with even cheaper duck dishes? _9:45 pm_[ricepaddy8] buffet Hello, Family visiting for weekend and we're looking for a good buffet (Norfolk/VA beach), preferably with sushi. Someone told me about one in the beach next to "Capt. George's," whatever that means. Any help?I've heard of New Belmont's sushi buffet, but that it's not very good.ETA: Apparently it is "Yukai byuffe". http://quirkink.multiply.com/photos/album/41/The_Yukai_Experience (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_12:21 am_[faux_pseudo] El Pollo Loco A few weeks ago I got a craving for El Pollo Loco. Unfortunate for us there aren't any here in VA. So I went and got myself a precooked rotisserie chicken, some salsa, some avocados and other things needed to recreate the taste of unhealthy health food.It was a good meal but it wasn't the same. Then just days after that I found out that a mile from the house they will be breaking ground on an El Pollo Loco in just a few more weeks. Now I will be able to buy it cheaper than I can make it. Joy.Now we just needs a Jack closer than 6.5 hours (by car) away and an In and Out some where closer than 6.5 hours (by plain) away and I will be much better adjusted. Sadly the only Roberto's style taco shop closed down and TJ is just too far away. (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_2:22 pm_[evilrob] Looking for a steak place Anyone got any recommendations on a steak place on the Southside? I'm trying to find something different and avoid Outback and such, and Logan's if possible, since I know they're gonna be slammed stupid on a Saturday after a military payday. (Comment on this)

_1:01 pm_[writersblock_va] Hayashi Sushi & Grill (Newport News) Ok, I only eat here about every six months and every six months I'm conflicted about ever going back. But I always give in, because it litterally is walking distance from my job, and some days I really need some Rice and grilled meat for lunch. So Obviously, I gave in again. and I strolled over to get takeout. I got my "favorite" from there, the Pork Donburi. The lady who took my order? Very Nice. The Restaurant itself, beautiful and very high end.Food? Excellent. (Tho I do NOT recommend the spicy Rice bowl, zuccini/ squash and funky spices, tried it once, NOT my cup of tea).Service? ABYSMAL. 30 Frickin minutes to get a Bowl of damned rice w/ fried meat.I mean seriously. Its A Japanese Resturant. I KNOW they have a giant cooker of rice back there. You take your pre-breaded slab o-meat, crack some eggs over it, throw in a handfull of sliced green onions and some carrot shavings, Scramble and Bing! Done in 5 min! (Ok, MAYBE 10 min. at the outside)The Place is Freaking EMPTY for a Monday. Maybe 10 people were in there the same time I was. There is NO damn reason it should take 30 min to get that meal done.I know.. One of these days I'll give in again. And will probably order my Donburi bowl again.. But Next time.. NEXT Time. I will CALL THE FRICK AHEAD and place an order 30 min. before I want to eat. Crimeny!P.S. a Spit Cup of Miso soup w/ a Take out order?.. Aside from being Odd.. Was Delish. Even on a Hot day like today. (3 Comments |Comment on this)

_11:12 am_[shardofnarsil] VB Restaurant Week January 14-21 is going to be Virginia Beach Restaurant Week! A bunch of great places are participating this year, too. Basically, you can go to these eateries and get a three course meal (some of them have lunch and dinner menus) for $20. The list of restaurants is here. I went to Coyote Cafe last year, and it was delicious. Norfolk should be doing it as well soon, but I am not positive about the other cities......Cross posted to hamptonroadsCurrent Mood: happy (Comment on this)

_4:00 pm_[writersblock_va] Cheeseburg in Paradise: Newport News We hit this place on Halloween this week, just wanted to let folks know. Some of our friends were raving about it, and we took the kids there. Fraknly, I wish I could give a better review but I was a little distacted by my 3yr who was Totally DONE withing being out and about for the evening. To break it down, the waitstaff were prompt, Food service was speedy, and the meals all apeared to go over very well with everyone. Cept for my kid of course.. Anyway, the BIG thing to report... They Have "Cubans"! Woo! I FINALLY Found a place to order a Cuban Sandwich! And it was actually pretty good. My only objection is they used Mayo on the sanwich instead of the spicy sauce that they should have used, but I can forgive that. It was definitly a "pressed" sandwich, good bread, had all the differnet meats in it, tho it could have used a bit more pork on it. Otherwise, Two Thumbs up! Best one so far for the area :) (Aside from the ones my wife makes for me)Oh and Price wise, mine was either 8$ or 9$, I forget which. I think that was comparable for most of the entree's. not superexpensive, but not cheap for sandwiches either. (Comment on this)

_10:34 am_[shardofnarsil] Couple of places Last night I went to a friend's birthday dinner at Sonoma, in Town Center. It was a pretty pricey bistro/wine bar. Not a place I'd frequent regularly, but it was interesting, and I felt like a guest at Hell's Kitchen (the reality show, not the place in Norfolk). The menu was pretty hoity toity for me. I had the "Pan Seared Atlantic salmon over a mushroom duxell tart complimented with a savory wild mushroom cream sauce and haricot verts". I don't know what haricot verts are, but I think they were green beans. I had a glass of Australian red wine dubbed "the villain" that was delicious. So, if you're into that sort of thing, go there! This is the website. Last weekend I tried De Vines, a tiny Italian place in the Greenbriar area of Chesapeake. I had an excellent canoli (spinach & bacon) that was the perfect size. I ate the whole damn thing. I also have to mention that I went to Golden Corral for the first time. I have disliked buffets forever, for many reasons. My first job was at Captain George's on Laskin Road, and it was a hectic, gross place. I don't like the idea of other people's grubby hands near food I'm going to eat (at least I don't want to see it, LOL). Plus I'm accident prone, and standing there putting food on my plate in front of people just spells disaster. I want it done for me. That being said, my job had a staff meeting at Golden Corral, so I had no choice. We were there right when the place opened, so the food was pretty fresh - I liked that. I only ate side item-type stuff, but I suppose it was pretty good. Current Mood: irritated (Comment on this)

_10:19 am_[writersblock_va] Crackers: Norfolk Ok, Well I'm a little Pissed, because this is the SECOND time I've typed this. LJ just ate the completed one I did previously... Anyway here we go again. We Hit Crackers last night, and had a Great time! We were VERY surprised at how full it was though. 7pm on a RAINY Tuesday night and there was ONE table left. Now I admit, Crackers is TINY, at most about 20 people can fit in there, but still. Its NEVER been full like that when we've gone on a weeknight. And a Rainy night? I really expected we'd be just about the only folks in there. Either its a fluke, or its gotten a LOT more popular since we first started going. I'm betting on Popular :)( Read more...Collapse ) Current Mood: calm (7 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:26 pm_[shardofnarsil] One of my favorite sushi restaurants Kotobuki in Ghent. This place never fails to deliver some amazing food. The sushi is fantastic, they also have excellent miso soup and salad (the dressing doesn't smother the veggies like some places do), and the atmosphere's great. If you're a vegetarian, they also have delicious veggie rolls (asparagus and sweet potato!). My boyfriend doesn't eat fish, so it's nice to go there with him. At least he has more choices than just veggie tempura or something. Current Mood: hungry (5 Comments |Comment on this)
_11:38 am_[faux_pseudo] Junk food Has anyone here any knowledge of where to get Chili Lime Fritos in the HR area?I haven't had any since I moved out here 2 1/2 years ago and I am starting to get the shakes from withdrawal.Seems like the only flavor they have here are the Chili ones and they just aren't the same.
