That we need skin mobility to move and breath normally is often unknown or underestimated. Skin moves in specific physiological movement directions and scarring can hinder movement and breathing. Scarring especially in the trunk, can have detrimental effects on the growing body of every child. Skin is divided into skin units and scars also effect the whole surrounding area. The question posed is, can we address scars with tape, and should we?

Individuals with extremely limited movement are at high risk of developing changes in body shape.... more Individuals with extremely limited movement are at high risk of developing changes in body shape. The link between unsupported supine lying and the development of postural asymmetry was first identified in 1976. These changes are highly predictable and should be preventable. A recent scoping review of current practice on postural care acknowledges “Poor postural care can have severe and life-threatening complications.” The Confidential Inquiry into Premature Death of People with Learning Disabilities highlights more than 40% of premature deaths being caused by pneumonia and aspiration pneumonia. Many children and adolescents with a neuromuscular scoliosis are at risk for curve progression and structural changes.
Conclusions
Interest is most focussed on the spine but we need to protect the chest shape also. Acknowledged in numerous UK policy documents is that a 24-hour approach to postural care provision is required in order to protect individuals at risk of changes caused by gravity.

Esther de Ru Introduction. The most common causes of fractures are falls, sports injuries, accidents, osteoporosis and in some cases, overuse (fatigue, stress). In some cases, infants break their clavicle during birth. Rib fractures can be caused by everything from a cough to a major trauma. Scapula fractures are most often caused by direct trauma from the back or side. Vertebral compression fractures can occur secondary to trauma (accidents, sports), malignancies, or most commonly osteoporosis. Cancer patients suffer fractures more easily (particularly in the wrist, vertebrae, and hip).

Is the microwave or are microplastics also to blame? Could the perceived weakness of the trunk and possible changes in our elastin and collagen distribution be caused by microplastic pollution? In the last three decades I have been seeing more typically developing children present with weak trunk muscles (protruding stomach wall). We began to see more children with weak core muscles and the number of children presenting with a positional plagiocephaly and positional torticollis increased rapidly in the Netherlands. Another ‘weakness’ that I started seeing once I started looking closely, was the number of children born with a diastasis of the Linea Alba. I wonder why this is happening and discuss the possible role of microwaving and microplastic pollution.

A number of skin properties are not to be found in current medical text books. Could knowledge of cells changing shape, Cutaneous Functional Units, organ-zones, Skin Tension lines be important? Does it help the understanding how pain is influenced by using elastic tape therapeutically? The literature review conducted found that many variables make interpreting studies about Kinesiology taping to address pain very challenging. Have we overrated the importance of Systematic Review's? Do we miss out on interesting new developments if we do not take all research into account? Is any study about Kinesiology Tape of any importance if the authors have not taken the skin into account? Outcomes of case reports and studies about the effects of skin stretch by means of tape can be of great importance to clinicians. Not knowing the exact process, whereby we address pain with a skin stimulus such as tape, should not be holding us back. Skin is our way in, and our best guide. Our patients' brain knows if this tape application and stimulus is good yes or no. It is Evidence Based Practice with the patient actively participating.

Research of the conservative therapeutic possibilities for children with early onset and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis are readily available. Articles and studies about the treatment possibilities for children with neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) are sadly lacking and during the most recent search it became apparent that another approach was needed. One of the difficulties was that the neuromuscular scoliosis is present in so many different disorders. What could be the perfect treatment option for one disorder might not be so for the other.

Clinical Notes, 2019

Congenital and Acquired Diastasis Recti Abdominis & Elastic Therapeutic Taping Congenital Diastas... more Congenital and Acquired Diastasis Recti Abdominis & Elastic Therapeutic Taping Congenital Diastasis Recti Abdominis occurs in new-borns. It is defined as an inter-rectus distance that is greater than 3 cm in this population. It is thought to be caused by a relative weakness of the fascia between the rectus muscle bellies. It is not a herniation and not pathological, and with time spontaneous resolution is expected. Acquired Diastasis Recti Abdominis (acquired DRA/RAM) can occur as a result of prolonged transverse stress on the Linea Alba and stomach wall in men, postmenopausal women and in women during pregnancy . Acquired DRA can result from a number of conditions that 'weaken' the Linea Alba, resulting in protrusion of abdominal contents. It is not be confused with abdominal wall hernia. The question whether tape is useful to help treat these conditions is under debate. Using tape is relatively new and the aim of this paper is to introduce a specific taping technique which must be used together with an individualized exercise program. Many will have treated patients with an acquired DRA and possibly have included tape. This subject will not be addressed here but we do look at the literature as we could possibly learn from the results found in the adult population.

A range of factors, including the country's culture, models of training and education, and health care systems can all influence whether and how interventions are adopted for use within clinical practice. Presentatie gehouden tijdens het 7e Multidisciplinaire Symposium over MS December 2018. Medical Taping/Kinesio Taping. Is deze echt effectief of is het de grootste nonsense?
Abstract

Menstruation, Pregnancy, Labour and High Heels. Addressing the discomforts and pain with tape.

Abstract

Elastic Therapeutic Taping also known as Kinesio- or Kinesiology Taping has become a treatment modality used in many clinics. There are various ways of using tape and a number of different methods. More and more research into how the tape works on the human body has been undertaken. A large amount of studies have looked into various applications on both healthy subjects as well as patients. Sadly one much underestimated participant, the skin organ has not been mentioned often. The skin, the surface we apply the tape on, has been sadly overlooked. There is sufficient knowledge available but it seems that it is unknown to many.
In this presentation I hope to share a little about the properties of skin; especially the unknown ones. To use the possibilities tape offers to the fullest, we need to know about skin mobility, the physiological movement direction of skin, the cutaneous nerves, the fact that skin cells change shape during stretch and the different skin types. A short list of studies looking into the effects of applying tape to skin is presented. The use of test patches (of a number of good brands) is mentioned.
Discussed are the studies carried out looking into the effects of using tape for so-called ‘feminine issues’. At this National Women Physio Conference problems arising from menstruation, pregnancy, labour, birth and wearing high heels are addressed. It seemed relevant to speak about these to an audience of ladies. Studies looking into the effects of tape to address dysmenorrhea are by far in the majority.
Studies about the use of tape for premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy related back pain, sciatica during pregnancy, labour pain, recovery after caesarean section, diastasis recti abdominis and wearing high heels have been conducted. They studies will be addressed shortly. Many show the positive effects of using tape. Taping in pregnancy is under debate as colleague’s worldwide think differently about its safety yes/no.
In conclusion: tape can be used for many issues related to pain, swelling and dysfunction but must be used with knowledge taking the skin into account. Knowledge of various Theories and Taping Methods and knowing how tape works is needed to understand outcomes and use tape meaningfully.

Research paper thumbnail of Literature Review: effects of Elastic Therapeutic Tape use as adjunct to treating spinal disorders. Taping goals, applications and current practice are critically appraised

Background: Elastic therapeutic Taping (ETT) has become a promising resource for treating many symptoms. Its effects on pain, posture, balance, gait, strength, endurance, swelling and ROM are well documented. It is also known under the names Kinesio Taping and Kinesiology Taping. In the last decade colleagues have started using ETT on people with scoliosis and kyphosis. A variation of applications to address pain, postural control, pulmonary function, functional re-education and balance are described but the clinical reasoning behind specific applications and their effects are not clear.
Objective: To systematically review the literature of clinical tape applications and the evidence of the effects of ETT on people of all ages with kyphosis and scoliosis types. To critically analyse the applications used and results obtained.
Method: Searches were conducted in electronic databases, Facebook groups and online papers in every language. Every article published and found until December 2017, involving the use of ETT on patients with spinal disorders was included. Results presented in all studies are discussed. As taping goals, tape application, patient age groups, classification and assessment tools differed, main results of all studies are presented.
Results: Positive results were associated with taping application: even though tape was very often used as an adjunct to therapy. Clinical reasoning behind applications was not clear, nor mentioned in many cases. As the original hypothesis into the effects of this method is under debate, the actual effects of the applications are not always reliable.
Conclusion: Elastic therapeutic taping seems to be a promising adjunct but results and treatment goals vary. As it often used in conjunction with standard treatment, its’ specific effects are difficult to surmise. Using tape without sufficient knowledge of skin movement might prove useless or possible harmful. More research into the effects of adding ETT as adjunct treatment of spinal disorders of all age groups is badly needed.

Relevance: Introduction of relevant research into routine patient care is a real challenge. This presentation aims to bridge the gap between innovative research and our daily professional practice. Patella tracking might not be necessary as a result.
Purpose: Aim is to present the results of exiting research and its transition into the clinic in the case of taping knee disorders. Ground breaking research into the effects of taping on motor control, decision making, coordination and pain has been undertaken. The results of these findings have been translated into a new clinical tape application.
Methods: An extensive search of relevant databases and internet journals looking for information of the effects of taping (measured by ultra-sonar imaging, fMRI and VAS pain scale) on motor control, decision making, coordination and pain has been undertaken. Research into the skin-brain connection justifying how and why (elastic) therapeutic tape works was also conducted. Two important studies (Callaghan M and Konishi Y) were found. In both cases the authors applied a 10 cm wide tape of different brand and composition to the flexed knee covering the patella. To prevent pleats in the tape or underlying skin a small adjustment was made in the clinic. Two oblong rounded strips of 5 cm elastic therapeutic tape were cut and these were applied in a parallel fashion.
Analysis: The resulting tape was applied to the painful knee of six volunteers with Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) and/or osteoarthritis.
Results: Applying 2 oblong shaped strips of 5 cm elastic therapeutic tape parallel to each other onto the frontal skin of the knee has positive effects on pain and function in both PFPS and Osteoarthritis.
Conclusions: This application has a positive effect on pain and function in both disorders in this group of volunteers.
Impact and Implications: This tape application could very well be as effective as the patella tracking McConnell tape used in cases of PFPS.

Will manipulating skin influence trunk rotation as measured by scoliometer? Immediate results of ... more Will manipulating skin influence trunk rotation as measured by scoliometer? Immediate results of applying Elastic Therapeutic Tape on spinal rotation: experimental study of twins with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.
Introduction: The human body needs skin moving normally to function properly. Research by Richard RL and colleagues identified functional cutaneous areas in the body. They found that the amount of skin involved in joint movement extends far beyond the immediate proximity of the local joint creases. Recent research by prof. T Fukui has shown the physiological movement path of skin in the whole human body. Should skin movement or the lack thereof be a matter of concern in the treatment of scoliosis patients? Can we influence rotational movement of the spine by manipulating the skin with tape?
Method: Four different tape applications were trialled in two sessions with the assistance of two thirteen year old twin girls with IAS. Parents and girls consented after explanation of experimental study goals and method. They were familiar with Elastic Therapeutic Taping and its possibilities in sports as they both play basketball. Participants were assessed with scoliometer at a number of vertebral levels before applying the tapes and directly after applying. Tapes were then removed. Two application were trialled per session.
Conclusion: The last tape applied in the lumbar area resulted in influencing spinal rotation in both participants measured by scoliometer. This experiment shows that we can influence rotation of the spine just by applying a small piece of elastic tape therapeutically taking Fukui research and his Skin Rules into account.
Discussion: The ‘extra’ skin making flexion and extension of trunk possible is located in the lower trunk region. Interestingly skin movement during rotation trunk changes direction at the spine. This experimental research shows that we can influence skin and rotation in the spine just by applying manual stretch or tapes. More research into this phenomena could be of importance.
