Research paper thumbnail of The interaction of silver ions and hydrogen peroxide in the inactivation of E. coli: a preliminary evaluation of a new long acting residual drinking water disinfectant

Water Science and Technology, 1995

The inactivation efficiencies of silver ions. bydrogen peroxide and their combination was studied... more The inactivation efficiencies of silver ions. bydrogen peroxide and their combination was studied as part of a perfonnance evaluation of the combined disinfectant for drinking water applications. The truljor advantages of such combined disinfectant include. low toxicity of its componentS, long lasting residual effect and low disinfection by product formation. Specific strains of E. coU (E. coli-B (SR.9) and Eo coli K-12) were used in this study as target microorganisms and the separate and combined inactivation efficiencies of silver and bydrogen peroxide were evaluated at different concentrations and exposure durations. Both. silver and bydrogen peroxide exhibited a significant inactivation performance even at concentrations that do not pose any health risk according to the EEC. WHO and the USEPA (the USEPA Maximum Contaminant Level <MCL) of silver is 90 ppb. and currently. there is no MCL for bydrogen peroxide but it is approved as a food additive in the USA). Combinations of I: 1000 silver.bydrogen peroxide (w) exhibited bigber inactivation performance as compared with eacb of the disinfectants alone and in some cases a synergistic effect was observed, i.e., the combined disinfectant exbibited bigber inactivation perfonnance than the sum of the inactivation levels of the separate disinfectants. Thus, for example. one bour exposure to 30 ppb silver. 30 ppm bydrogen peroxide and their combination yielded 2.87. 0.65 and 5 logs of inactivation respectively. While the rate of inactivation shown by this combined disinfectant. now available commercially in a stabilized formulation is relatively slow. it may well bold promise as a secondary disinfectant providing long lasting residuals and biofilm control required for distribution systems. Its disinfection action truly be similar to chloramines. the use of which bas been recently outlawed in France and in Germany and wbich are now under careful scrutiny in other countries due to the formation of undesirable by•products.

In these compounds, the acids exist exclusively as zwitterions, as opposed to non-solvated crystals. In compounds 1–3, the hydrogen peroxide molecules form two donor hydrogen bonds and, in some cases, one additional acceptor hydrogen bond. Peroxosolvate 2 can be considered as a novel drug formulation of vitamin B3.

Research paper thumbnail of Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Blood for Differentiation of Species

Analytical Biochemistry, 1999

We have recently found electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to be an effective means of rapidly analyzing blood samples for species identification. Nearly 1000 individuals were analyzed which comprised 62 species represented by birds, mammals, and reptiles. Whole blood and dried blood samples were analyzed without purification to provide simultaneous molecular weights from the alpha- and beta-proteins present in each sample&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s hemoglobin. The combination of the two molecular weights for the hemoglobin proteins (i.e., alpha/beta-pairs) was used as species determining markers. In all, 133 distinctive alpha/beta-pairs were observed from the individuals analyzed. Despite the variability in the hemoglobins evaluated, 86% of these alpha/beta-pairs were found to be diagnostic for a particular species to the exclusion of all other species studied. No other single protein system studied by a single analytical technique can so effectively resolve species from a wide range of taxa as can the hemoglobin system when analyzed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

Research paper thumbnail of GC determination of N-nitrosamines by supersonic molecular beam MS equipped with triple quadrupole analyzer, GC/SMB/QQQ/MS

Analytica Chimica Acta, 2011

The determination of 14 N-nitrosamines by a supersonic molecular beam electron ionization mass sp... more The determination of 14 N-nitrosamines by a supersonic molecular beam electron ionization mass spectrometer equipped with triple quadruple analyzer, GC/SMB/EI/QQQ/MS is presented. The supersonic molecular beam electron ionization ion source allows the elucidation of the molecular ion of 13 out of the 14 examined nitrosamines (except for diphenylnitrosamine which was degraded before the analysis). It was possible to use the molecular ions of all the nitrosamines as the parent ions for multiple reactions monitoring mode, which in turn allows significant increase of specificity and lowering of the method limit of detection of the higher molecular weight nitrosamines. The instrumental LOD for different N-nitrosamines was 1-5 pg injection −1. The proposed method was exemplified by analysis of N-nitrosamines and N-nitrosatables in rubber teats according to the British Standard BS EN 12868:1999.

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 2015

AbstractThe Shafdan wastewater treatment system treats the municipal wastewater of the Tel-Aviv m... more AbstractThe Shafdan wastewater treatment system treats the municipal wastewater of the Tel-Aviv metropolitan area, which contains 22 cities with a population of about two million. The conventional mechanical–biological treatment is followed by managed groundwater recharge. The effluent undergoes soil aquifer treatment (SAT) by controlled passage through the unsaturated zone and an average retention time of 960 days in the aquifer. The SAT provides effluent polishing treatment as well as seasonal and multiannual storage, which are much needed in the semiarid Mediterranean climate. The Shafdan SAT operates without disinfection prior to the land spreading of the secondary effluents or after the water is reclaimed from the aquifer. Despite that, since 1995 there has not been even a single positive test of fecal coliforms (FC) in any of the reclamation wells, and since 2001, all of the enterovirus tests in an observation well located midway between the infiltration basins and the reclamation wells were negativ...
