They have thematic diversity and various scales. However, there is a need for a particular event strategy for active urban development, city image improvement, and
tourism growth. The study focuses on Moscow 'event portfolio' and discusses events as platforms and networks for event growth and value creation. The research based on a case-study approach examines the evaluation of Moscow event tourism products and their conversion into a unique city platform appealing to both tourists and locals. Special attention is paid to Times and Epochs, the major historical re-enactment festival in Russia and one of the biggest in the world which started in 2011 and became very successful. The festival organizers have formed a comprehensive platform generating cultural events, media projects, and other activities to create new meaningful values based on direct communication and event involvement of the re-enactment community network, tourists and locals for further tourism development.

The study provides an overview of modern research methods used in Russia and other countries for making forecasts in the field of tourism. It aims at assessing the predictive capabilities of adaptive modeling, not frequently used currently in tourism research, for the quantitative analysis of tourist flows using the example of Barcelona, a major urban tourist destination in the pre-pandemic period. An example of a forecast for tourist numbers based on adaptive models is proposed, one of the key indicators showing tourist region success which have proven successful in the study of processes with a dynamic but unstable character.

However, in the 1980-1990s it was a typical small town with depressive socio-economic structure based on forestry, small enterprises, folk crafts and distinctive social challenges such as migration, high unemployment, et al. The project «Veliky Ustyug – Ded Moroz Homeland» comparable to Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, Finland has increased greatly the tourist flow to the town and improved considerably its socio-economic situation. The research is based on extensive field studies, theoretical observations and includes statistics analysis as well as the results of in-depth interviews with experts and regional stakeholders taken in 2011-2016, r...

The results of overall research at national, regional and local levels and case studies held in several regions of Russia are presented. They confirm that Russia’s huge cultural and historical heritage is still inefficiently used in tourism. In recent years the growing demand for cultural tours remains largely pending due to lack of modern tourist products and their insufficient promotion. The use of iconic and flagship attractions for increasing the destination attractiveness as well as culture-tourism interaction in regional development are being discussed. Currently, particular attention is paid to events based on cultural and historical sites. “National Calendar of Events” and national “Russian Event Award” are established to encourage event tourism growth. State policy in cultural tourism management in Russia is now changing mainly from the separate “growth points” development to the organiza...

Moscow as the capital and the biggest city of Russian Federation, its historical, spiritual and c... more Moscow as the capital and the biggest city of Russian Federation, its historical, spiritual and cultural centre with the leading role in Russia’s modern political and economic life has all reasons not only to act as the major tourism centre all round the country but also to compete effectively with other European capital cities. In recent times Moscow has been traditionally presented as business tourism centre. Starting from 2011 it is also promoted as cultural tourism centre. The main reforms are aimed at tourism infrastructure development, expanding tourism products variety, increasing tourism service quality and promotion of Moscow tourism product at national and international tourism markets. The former image of Moscow as an interesting but not matching the travellers’ demands destination (because of high expenses, complicated tourist formalities, insecurity, etc.), i.e. as the city of delayed demand, is now left in the past. The city has changed and became more lively and attractive but still serious work should be done to make Moscow competitive among cultural tourism destinations.
