Porn Star Interview - Cathy Barry » Hush-Hush (original) (raw)

“Pierced cocks are wicked, but they’re a real pain if you’re fond of deepthroating”, says Cathy Barry.

“I have always been very motherly over the other girls in the scene – I hate the whole competitive feeling that so many pornstars have – everyone wants to be the top cat” says Cathy Barry.

“I just try to help everyone I can, and I’m repaid in people thinking well of me – the girls say they’ve always wanted to work with me – they call me Auntie Cath!”

My mum only wished she’d had the guts when she was my age. A lot of people say that, but not many mums! My dad wasn’t so open to the idea, but I called him a hypocrite.

Interview with porn star Cathy Barry

Porn Star Cathy BarryWhat was the first modelling you ever did?
I used to work in a bra factory, and I was modelling for photos on the boxes. You could say I’ve always been in the boob industry.

And then you just kind of slid into depravity?
Well, I started a bit of girl/girl at 23. It was all going swimmingly, and I got popular enough for the Adult Channel to ask for a special Cathy Barry night. But they wanted something “a bit different”. I was too naive then to know what that really meant – they wanted boy/girl of course, and I was a bit scared! Not of the cock, just the HIV situation, and I was married and stuff.

Ah yes, your filmmaking husband. So was he filming your movies back then too?
Yes, and the fact that he was filming this one made it easier for him and I to deal with. Having sex with another man isn’t such a big deal when your husband’s so cool.

It’s good that you’ve got that kind of support. Were your parents as good about it too?
My mum only wished she’d had the guts when she was my age. A lot of people say that, but not many mums! My dad wasn’t so open to the idea, but I called him a hypocrite – in his rugby club they get strippers in and he’s happy to watch them – but when it’s his own daughter it’s not such a laugh!

So how long have you been with Phil?
I’ve known him since I was 9, and we’ve been together 20 years.

That’s really sweet. You must be very happy together to have such a good marriage.
Ah, but Phil and his corny jokes make me laugh. The world’s too full of doom and gloom, anyone who can make me laugh is a friend forever – or in Phil’s case, lover!

Was there ever a time you didn’t feel as sexy as you do now?
Well, I was bullied at school for being fat. It was just a bit of puppyfat, and it came off easily enough when I got out of my teens, but kids are cruel, aren’t they?

Yup. But you still live in Bristol, don’t you? Do you ever see any of the bullies?
I was lapdancing one night, which I do on top of the porn, and one of the guys who bullied me was there. He called me over for a dance, having not recognised me, and then when I took his cash, I think he twigged. I just walked away, saying “enjoy your dance”. Serves him right.

Good for you. Now you’re all sexy and famous. I doubt many of them can say the same!
Yes, I have made a bit of a name for myself round here. I catch people pointing at me sometimes or talking about me, it’s all a bit weird.

So you get recognised in the street?
Well, in the gym, in the supermarket, in traffic jams… it’s really flattering but sometimes I just want to get on with what I’m doing and go home to my family.

Tell me a bit about your family, apart from Phil.
I have 2 sons, who are 15 and 16. They grew up with what I do, so they’re pretty used to it. Although, I don’t leave DVDs lying around the house or anything – what I do at work stays at work. I used to worry they’d be picked on because of my porn, but it turned out to be the opposite – they have loads of friends! When they come knocking on the door, half the time they ask for me, not the boys!

Porn Star Interview - Cathy BarryAh, hormones. But you get on well with young people, I guess, having sons and their friends around?
I’m a big kid at heart. That’s why I’ve done ok in the industry, I guess, because I can get down to the level of the youngsters appearing on the scene today, and relate to them.

So, the boobs. The famous JJ boobs.
Bill and Ben, my puppies! I had them done at 23, and then twice more over the years.

That’s a lot of surgery. Was it worth it?
Oh god, yes. Before my first boobjob, I was so shy, but each time I had them done, I got more confidence. It was like I reclaimed my body and really made it my own.

Speaking of reclaiming your body, I love your clit hood piercing.
Oh, so do I – I wouldn’t be without it! People always ask if it hurt, but it wasn’t all that painful, just a little pop. Sometimes, after I’ve been to the loo, it gets tucked up inside the lips, and then when my costar takes a look down there, it’ll pop out and surprise them! But it’s worth it, for the pleasure it gives me.

Ever fucked a pierced cock?
Oh yes, but not at work. Phil used to have a Prince Albert and an ampallang in his cock. I used to love them, but he took them out.

Pierced cocks are wicked, but they’re a real pain if you’re fond of deepthroating. By the way, I’m collecting deepthroat tips – what are yours? It’s all about lying your tongue flat, and sticking it out as far as you can as you suck.

Porn Star Interview - Cathy Barry

So tell me about doing double anals. You’re one of the only pornstars I’ve seen do that who isnt gay or a tranny. Respect.
I’ve done 3. The first one was actually an accident – it was meant to be a normal DP but ended up as a DA for some reason. There’s a good DA scene in Cathy’s Diaries 2. Getting into position is a bit of a trying situation though…it can rip you in two if you’re not careful.

What about fisting?
What, anally? I’ve never found a girl with hands small enough! But vag is ok. There was a fisting scene in the bath in Cathy Does Vegas, I was really horny, all wet inside, and it whipped up there. It got censored though. Spoilsports!

Speaking of pain in porn, what do you think of movies where the guys slap the girl about and spit on her?
I hate it, it’s so degrading. When I see that kind of thing I just want to get up and punch the guys doing it. I simply cannot understand why men would get off on doing that, or watching it.

So you wouldn’t take part in one then?
No, and I’ve never been asked to either – I think producers know I’m not like that – I like to be treated with a bit of respect! I mean, those films are so tacky – it’s not quality porn, if a girl appears in one, she will regret it, it’s not easy to have other producers respect you after that, or to keep your dignity. In this industry, you have to have self respect, or you get burned out and screwed up.

It’s lovely the way you’re so protective over the other girls.
I’ve always been very motherly over the other girls in the scene – I hate the whole competitive feeling that so many pornstars have – everyone wants to be the top cat. I just try to help everyone I can, and I’m repaid in people thinking well of me – the girls say they’ve always wanted to work with me – they call me Auntie Cath!

So what’s the most important lesson you try to pass on to them?
Keep your feet firmly on the floor and always remember where you’ve come from. It always pays to be nice to other people and treat them as you’d like to be treated. And never put on airs and graces, no matter how popular you get.

Porn Star Interview - Cathy BarryWhat is the hardest type of scene for you to do?
It would have to be girl/girl scenes where the other girl isn’t really bisexual, and won’t get into it at all. I just switch off and do it on autopilot – but I hate it because there’s no passion. If there’s no passion, there’s no point; men have been overexposed to naked flesh and raw sex – they need something more.

I imagine a lot of girls just seem to be in it for the money.
Yes, and while that’s a valid reason, it shouldn’t be the only one. I’m in it because I enjoy sex – I don’t care about the money – and it makes the films come out so much better, it really shows. I’ve seen so much terrible porn out there, just repetitive mechanical rubbish… it’s very obvious when girls are in it only for the cash.

So what do you really not like doing?
I find it really hard to pee on camera, I can’t even pee in front of Phil at home! I know there’s lots of call for it, although I can’t see the attraction myself.

What do you regret doing?
Oh, I wish I’d never done the amateur stuff when I was younger – it’s so horrible! It’s just embarrassing – Phil and I will be watching some adult channel, and one of my old amateur films will come on, and I just walk out the room, I can’t even look at it!

What do you love doing, apart from the sex?
My favorite job is when I get booked as a kissogram as a policewoman – it’s one of my most popular costumes. Sometimes I get given an entire script to follow, and I ‘arrest’ the guy… they love it!

That’s wicked, I didn’t realise you did those. It really makes you accessible to your fans too.
Lots of guys book me as a strippogram or kissogram for their mates stag night, especially if they find out he watches my films. But sometimes they’re such a fan that when I turn up, they’re all frightened and nervous, and try to run away! I tell them I’m not going to bite, but I think it’s probably the polaroids we take of them with me – mabybe they worry about who’s going to see them!

By the way, do you get a lot of people obsessing about your accent?
Oh yes! I get men telling me never to change it – as if I could! My mum sent me for elocution lessons when I was young, and they tried so hard to make me speak ‘properly’, but in the end they gave up on me because they realised it’s part of who I am; I’m defined by it.

Who thinks up the storylines in Cathy’s Diaries?
Phil usually comes up with the main scenario, then everyone in the studio gives some input, depending on how it’s going. After all, everyone knows what’s sexy – we’ll get the cameraman and soundman yelling out suggestions!

Is it much harder than it looks, being in porn?
It’s often hard if you’re a new girl, lots of them watch some porn, think they can do it, but then find they can’t act at all! If you’re going to be in any of my films, you have to be able to act a bit, otherwise it looks so wooden. And it’s not just turning up, filming the scene and going home – often when things go wrong, we’re in the studio from 8am to 8pm, waiting around, doing re-takes, sorting everything out. It’s not easy!

Do your friends watch your movies?
Funnily enough, the ones who are always asking to borrow DVDs are my gay friends, especially my hairdresser! They flock round me when I go to gay clubs, and they’re so funny, they really get me giggling! And they’re great to go shopping with – they know all the best clothes shops.

Ever managed to convert one?
No, but it’s not for lack of trying! It would be a massive turnon to get one into bed. All the best looking men are gay.

So what’s the plan for the future?
I’ll just carry on as I am now, but when I don’t appear in the movies anymore, I’ll be behind the scenes and around the studio at Pumpkin. I’ll help the new girls, show them my mistakes, and teach them right from wrong. I love my girls, I do.
