I read

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

by Lisa See recently and enjoyed it. I remember we had been discussing it and Professor Mandell had mentioned it. There are used copies over at Amazon starting at $1.84 or I'm sure your local library has a copy.: ) People who enjoyed Gail's Eastern Influence on Western Literature class might enjoy it (I'm not 100% sure I got the class name right..).

Take care!

Though this has nothing to do with reading new books....

I follow a lot of gaming and geek news (no surprise there, given my current and past employment), and today's Penny Arcade strip was about very Hustian things, indeed.

I give you, "You Will Feel The Heat," a gamer's interpretation of Dante's Inferno.

Enjoy!

I was going through my RSS feeds and I saw this news item and it made me think of HUST.

Here's another article I read a couple of days ago that also made me think of HUST:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7701232.stm

I'm up for reading. I'll go pick up Their Eyes Were Watching God when I've got some time (I'm at work almost all day... so maybe tomorrow).

There's a ton of things on my list of books I want to read. I miss HUST discussions! I read a ton for class, but I don't have any fun reading classes like Fantasy Youth Lit. or anything like that.

Well, I've got my mini-break. But I'm looking forward to reading and chatting with you guys.

hey!

Hey Everyone!!!
I just got done reading _How Green Was My Valley_--it was soooooo good!!!!!! It's set in Wales in the 1940s. Now, I'm in the middle of one called The Singing Fire by Lilian Nattel. It is about two Jewish women's lives in London around the late 1800s and is also pretty good; i just read a part and it totally reminded me of Colleen's class when we discussed "being English" and foreigners needing to adjust to an English way of life... I saw it in an outdoor sale at this small bookshop downtown and was only like 2 dollars--which is sweet! Ashley said she read Their Eyes Were Watching God and recommends it, so I really want to start that one soon. If anyone else is interested in reading or rereading that one, just let me know. Oh yeah, I'm also working at Barnes and Noble part time like 5 streets from our apartment...so I'm surrounded by books all the time--which is awesome but also dangerous b/c I just want to buy them all, I already made this huge reading list. So yeah, If anyone wants to read Their Eyes Were Watching God, we can post about it on here....ok, bye for now :-)

Hey girls!

I've just moved to the East Coast, as I started a job at the illustrious Yale University (working for IT, what else? :-p). Now I need something to read, as I've left the majority of my library with my parents in Indiana. I figured who better to ask than my wonderful HUSTers?

Also, to the girls in NYC, I would love love love to come see you. You're only 2 hours away from me, or so. (Also, you're welcome to come visit; Yale is gorgeous.)

Ideas??

Here is something people might be interested in:

http://www.librarything.com/

It's a little bit like the Facebook bookshelf. Here's an excerpt from the journal Searcher:

"With most book recommendation engines, you enter an author or book title you like to retrieve recommendations. I used Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as my test book on LibraryThing. I knew I wanted only selections highly recommended in Amazon reviews (4-5 stars), less than 350 pages, and available in paperback. Within an hour, following various recommendations made by LibraryThing, I had a list of 18 books I thought my book club would enjoy."
-Jenni Starr
Searcher 15 no7 25-32 Jl/Ag 2007
"LibraryThing.com: The Holy Grail of Book Recommendation Engines"

I gotta admit... it sounds a bit like an informercial testimonial, but I'm intrigued. I actually had to read that article for one of my classes, and I'm checking out LibraryThing right now.

I hope everyone is well!

Edit: It has a feature called "legacy libraries" where you can see who else had a book in their library!! Very neat.

So, I'm guessing life is really busy for everyone?

I still might try and get this off the ground...

Erin just joined, so we have a few people who have joined and hopefully we'd be able to get in touch with the majority of the members one way or another? Is anyone still interested in reading? I'd like at least to try to keep in touch with everybody.

I hung out with Michelle in August in Greek Town in Chicago, and Ashley and Megan are in NYC (as well as Michelle!). I've talked to both of them a few times.

At the moment, I'm working at the Library of the Health Sciences in Urbana (though it's technically a UIC, not a UIUC, library). I'm very much enjoying GSLIS (Graduate School of Library and Information Science) and this weekend I will be in East St. Louis for my networking class. Over the course of three trips we'll be setting up computer networks at some nonprofits. I do believe the place my group is working at is a Baptist church. So, pretty neat.: ) I also volunteer once a week at the Center for Children's Books over at GSLIS, and that I have later tonight after I work. They're having me create a display.

I know some people were thinking of doing an LIS program, and I'd be happy to let them know about how things are done at the University of Illinois' program or point out some of the national and international organizations that deal with different specialties.

Hope everyone is doing well!! Take care!

p.s. I lightened the colors a bit... I think it needed it.

I'm so pissed

So, my apologies for being MIA. I've talked with Michelle and Ashley recently, but not really anyone else.

I did read the book and posted some thoughts on it, but I thought we might be waiting on more people to finish other books before continuing. Then I got sidetracked because a friend stayed for a week in July.

Anyway, I opened up the Courier today to see a full page devoted to the next Christian Culture Lecture. I so wish I could go!!! It's a Thursday night though and I have class Friday morning at 8:30am and I go until around 2pm or so.

How's everyone's summer? I was just at the White Sox game last night in completely awesome seats. I'll be heading to Champaign-Urbana in a week.

Just thought I'd check in with people here and see if anyone wanted to start up another book?
