This report develops a procedure for estimating the marginal value of water used for fishing that includes the effects of upstream diversions on all points downstream. The downstream effects are dispersed across a wide geographic area and, until now, have not been estimated. The procedure is applied to all 99 major river basins of the contiguous States. The tradeoffs in water allocation are detailed in the 67 river basins where irrigation competes for water with recreational fishing. The results substantiate the role of water for recreational fishing and highlight the implications of a national perspective in water allocation decisions.

Research paper thumbnail of Biomass production and ethanol potential from sweet sorghum

Potential feedstocks from crop-based energy production systems range from starchy and sugary tube... more Potential feedstocks from crop-based energy production systems range from starchy and sugary tuberous crops to woody, oilseed, or herbaceous crops (including corn, sweet and grain sorghums, and several grasses). An important characteristic of biomass crops is that the ratio of energy of the biomass product be large compared to the energy used to pro duce the crop. Because one of the most costly inputs in the latter component is nitrogen (N) fertilizer, any evaluation of potential energy crops must emphasize N inputs. Given its high N requirement, corn is not likely to meet all future ethanol demands. Corn also is limited by the inefficient conversion of starch to etha nol and by environmental and conservation considerations such as suitable land use.

And about 75 percent of the energy used in forage production is needed for forage harvest. Improving forages can also help farmers save money by reducing feed costs, which constitute about 42 percent of the total cost of maintaining beef cows. In one study that involved grazing of corn resi dues, the most profitable one-third of cow-calf producers fed 28 percent less stored feed than the least-profitable one-third.

Among the alternative crops suggested for diversifying Iowa agriculture are fresh vegetables for the commercial wholesale market.

Different econometric and statistical techniques of Ordinary Least Square, Granger causality tests, co-integration, and the Vector Error Correction Model are used to accomplish the overall objective of this study. The principal conclusion indicates that the Okun’s law does not hold in both Palestine and Israel, so that policymakers are advised to constantly direct human and other resources from unproductive to sustainable and productive activities that can shift aggregate demand and real output growth upwards. Toward this end, political stability and efficient governance should be taken into account

Changes in the tax laws may encourage different investment patterns in feedlots as to size, type of facility, feeding programs, and age of animal fed. Cost and returns are computed for a variety of feeding systems under the new and old tax laws.Substantial economies of size were found under both tax laws, bu they were more extreme under the new tax system.

This chapter reviews the studies that have analyzed such determinants from the policy perspective, and provides specific analytical examples for practitioners to identify the role of these determinants in the formulation of nutritional policy and program interventions. The magnitude and the nature of the nutritional contribution of these socio economic factors will vary depending on their interaction. This chapter also demonstrates the method of quantile regression to capture the policy and program effects of different socio economic groups.

Research paper thumbnail of Optimal Bidding Strategy for Financial Transmission Right

Financial Transmission Right (FTR) is an important tool to hedge transmission congestion charges ... more Financial Transmission Right (FTR) is an important tool to hedge transmission congestion charges in electricity market. The paper presents optimal bidding strategies for Financial Transmission Rights in an auction. In the FTR auction, FTR prices are affected by bidding prices from bidders; therefore, bidders may have market power to influence the auction clearing price by bidding strategically. In the proposed method, a conjectured price influence function is used to model bidders' market power on auction price. Market equilibrium is reached through the interaction among bidders and Independent System Operator (ISO) subject to bidders' strategic bidding. The numerical examples are shown to demonstrate the impact of bidders' market power on the FTR auction.

Research paper thumbnail of Econometric analysis of consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay for organic tomatoes in Palestine: Choice experiment method

The paper adopts the choice experiment method using the econometric analysis of the random utility model. The research questions of this study focus on awareness of the importance of ensuring / securing the environment, how many households in the West Bank purchase organic tomatoes, reasons for which households may be willing or not willing to pay more for organic tomatoes, and the main socioeconomic variables that affect the households willingness to pay for organic tomatoes when making organic tomatoes choices. The empirical results show that organic tomatoes are preferred to conventional ones because of health claims by respondents so that we conclude that respondents are willing to pay more for organic tomatoes compared to conventional ones. Additionally, consumers prefer organic products because of health and environmental benefits. Some policy measures might further promote the consumption of organic products. These include creating awareness of the relevance of consuming organic products through effective marketing and educational campaigns. However, there are about 500 organic farms in Palestine with a total area of 1'0000 square meters mainly under fruit, almond, olives and dates. According to the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committee, organic pasturelands are not found because of the Israeli control (German Development Agency GTZ) and according to the ministry of agriculture in Palestine, there are 24 organic olive farms with a total area of 18885 square meters.

Animal health breakthroughs have been occurring with regularity. They represent an advancement in technology. Likewise, the need for evaluation of technologies is not new. While animal health represents an arena where some dramatic new discoveries are likely, approaches for their evaluation and effective implementation into American agriculture will likely Include standard tools now available. This would involve tools such as budgeting, cash flow analysis, systems simulation analysis, and welfare analysis to measure benefits from improved animal health or disease control.

Serum samples were collected from sows which were part of the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) swine survey. The blood sera on file represented 394 randomly selected hog farms throughout the United States. Additionally, the NAHMS survey included information on type of production facilities and level of cat, dog, or bird access to the facilities. Of the sows tested 19 percent tested positive for toxoplasmosis. This study showed a positive relationship between sows or herds testing positive for Toxoplasma gondii and three factors: 1) method of rodent control, 2) type of production facility, and 3) access of certain animals (cats, dogs, birds) to production facilities. These data indicate that it will be difficult to eliminate T. gondii from swine herds which allow cat or dog access to facilities. Use of cats as a method of rodent control should be discouraged. We found a strong association between use of "bait only" for rodent control and the herd testing negative as compared to the use of "cats only" for rodent control. Greater industry awareness is needed for methods of rodent control through the use of baits. Sows in herds where female replacements were raised internally were significantly more likely to test positive for toxoplasmosis. Sows in confinement facilities had a significantly lower prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii. Herds testing positive were significantly smaller than those which were negative. In general, there were not any regional differences in prevalence rates. Sows testing positive did not have a reduced level of productivity.
