The efficiency is obtained without any outcoupling-enhancing structures and is 44% higher than the 82 lm W(-1) of similar optimized ITO-anode PHOLEDs. Detailed simulations show that this improvement is due largely to the intrinsically enhanced outcoupling that results from a weak microcavity effect.

Since the commercial foundation of integrated circuit manufacturing is silicon-based, it is an exciting prospect to develop optoelectronics in a material system that is compatible with silicon. However, the indirect band structure and large bandgap of Si makes this material unattractive for development of optoelectronics, as efficient light emission has not been realized. Also, photodetectors in Si material cannot detect optical signals at wavelengths advantageous for fiber-optic communications. Some of these shortcomings can be overcome by introducing a smaller bandgap material such as Ge in Si. The addition of Ge to Si extends the sensitivity range for photodetectors up to lambda = 1.6 mum. Based on this premise, a myriad of passive and active optoelectronic devices can be developed in this material. During the course of this research, low-loss passive waveguides, grating-couplers, directional-couplers and electro-optic Mach-Zehnder modulators, operating at wavelengths important for fiber optic communications were demonstrated in epitaxial Ge_{rm x}Si _{rm 1-x} layers grown by rapid thermal processing chemical vapor deposition (RTPCVD). The modal characteristics of straight waveguides and the coupling characteristics of directional couplers were computer-modeled and the simulation results are presented herein. Enhancement in voltage-bandwidth product has been demonstrated previously for III-V based Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) modulators. This motivated a similar investigation of quantum confinement effects in Ge_{ rm x}Si_{rm 1-x}/Si MQW material. To this end, Ge _{rm x}Si_ {rm 1-x}/Si quantum-well photodetectors were fabricated on material grown by remote plasma chemical vapor deposition, RPCVD, and by molecular beam epitaxy, MBE. The optical and electronic characteristics were analyzed and the results are presented. These devices demonstrated enhanced electroabsorption, and a concomitant red-shift associated with a phonon-assisted Franz-Keldysh Effect. Electrorefraction was calculated in Ge_{rm x} Si_{rm 1-x}/Si MQW material from experimental electroabsorption data using the Kramers-Kronig relationship. The broad scope of optoelectronic devices developed during the course of this research has demonstrated the flexibility of the Ge_{rm x} Si_{rm 1-x} material system for providing optical signal propagation, modulation and detection. This should provide the foundation for future realization of Si-based optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC's).

It challenges the conventional view that Lenin defended constraints on proletarian choice by appealing to the paternalistic vanguard theory set forth in What Is To Be Done? A systematic review of Lenin's revolutionary writings indicates that his legitimation strategy was based instead on an essentialist interpretation of class identity that made it possible to deny proletarian status, and thus democratic rights, to wage‐laborers who opposed Bolshevik rule. It is Lenin's theory of class, therefore, not his theory of the party per se, that is vital for an understanding of his authoritarian politics.

The systemic management of patients with colorectal cancer continues to focus on the use of 5-flu... more The systemic management of patients with colorectal cancer continues to focus on the use of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In the setting of metastatic disease, parenteral 5-FU has been shown to be superior to oral 5-FU; however, survival duration seems similar whether such parenteral 5-FU is administered in a "loading," weekly, or continuous infusion manner. The addition of other cytotoxic agents such as semustine, mitomycin C, or cisplatin to 5-FU does not appear to increase the response rate or prolong survival. The results of five randomized trials assessing the value of intraarterial hepatic infusions of 5-FU or floxuridine show that such regional chemotherapy increases the likelihood of hepatic response compared with systemic treatment but has little effect on survival and is associated with significant toxicity. Recent efforts in the management of patients with advanced disease have been directed at optimizing the activity of 5-FU by (1) enhancing the inhibition of DNA synthesis through the concomitant administration of folinic acid; (2) increasing drug incorporation into RNA through pretreatment with methotrexate or phosphonacetyl-L-aspartate; and (3) improving the drug's activity through the synergistic action of alpha-2a-interferon. Although the results of some of these investigations have been promising, only the 5-FU and folinic acid combination consistently has appeared to be superior to single-agent 5-FU. These different approaches to biochemical modulation are being compared in ongoing cooperative group trials.

The interaction between tube hydroforming and behaviour during crash events was studied using lightweight automotive structural members. Dynamic crush tests were performed on 400 mm length sections of both non-hydroformed and hydroformed EN-AW 5018 aluminium alloy tubes. The force versus crush distance data from 76.2 mm diameter non-hydroformed tubes was compared with results from 76.2 mm square cross-section hydroformed tubes of 2.0 and 3.5 mm initial tube thicknesses. The hydroforming operation was performed using a high-pressure process in which the corner radius of the tube cross-section was varied. Explicit dynamic finite element simulations of the hydroforming and crash events were carried out with particular attention to the transfer of forming history from the hydroforming simulations to the crash models. The values of the tube thickness, work hardening, residual stress, and damage level at the end of the hydroforming simulation were used as the initial state for the crash model. The Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman constitutive model was used to account for damage based on void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. Numerical predictions of the force versus crush distance response were compared to experimental data. The results have demonstrated that it is important to account for thickness changes and work hardening from previous forming operations, in simulating crash events. The energy absorbing capabilities of the hydroformed aluminium tubes decreased with sharper corner radius due to increased thinning of the material during the hydroforming process. It was found that the simulations slightly over-predicted the mean crush force compared to the experimental data. r

This open-label, dose-escalation phase 1 study was conducted at four US centers. Patients were enrolled into two sequential cohorts [30 (cohort 1) or 35 mg/m(2)/dose bid (cohort 2)]; dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) were evaluated during cycle 1 in dose-escalation cohorts. At RD, 15 additional patients were enrolled in an expansion cohort. Patients (N = 27) with refractory mCRC received TAS-102; 74 % had received ≥4 prior regimens. DLT was not observed in three patients in cohort 1, and was in one out of nine patients in cohort 2 (grade 3 febrile neutropenia). Therefore, RD was identified as 35 mg/m(2) bid. At RD, fatigue (63 %), gastrointestinal disturbances and nausea (46...
