This study examined media use among young people with emphasis on technology that is engaged, predictors of media usage, time spent on a particular media, ownership of media devices, average family income as a determinant of media technology acquisition, means of connection, purpose of usage among others.
A descriptive survey design was used to obtain data from respondents comprising of one hundred and one students from two secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. Furthermore, a structured questionnaire was administered to students and data collected thereafter were analyzed using frequency distributions and simple percentages.
Results obtained shows that most teenagers sampled (42%) spend less than one hour listening to music while a small fraction (2%) spend more than five hour using the computer in a day. Also, it was found that mobile phone ownership is more prevalent among the teenagers sample in the study. About 64% also reported that they use mobile to go online. Furthermore, (40%) of the teenagers that participated in the study revealed that they spend more time playing games on the computer.
It was concluded that media use among teenagers is dependent upon many variables just like previous studies indicated. However, more supervision and guided media usage among teenagers was recommended to yield more positive and balanced teenagers’ technology relationships.
