Even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist historical ... more Even though sustainability as a modern phenomenon has its roots in 1970s, there exist historical texts directly or indirectly addressing managerial sustainability. Among these texts, books of advice deserve a particular interest because of their relevance to the field of management. Kutadgu Bilig is an advice text written by Yusuf Khass Hajib of Balasagun in 1070 and presented to the reigning prince of Kashghar. It has been accepted as "the oldest monument of Islamic Turkish literature". According to Yusuf the key to a sustainable management is justice: "And if you desire everlasting kingdom, then do justice and remove injustice from the people".This study aims to show the relevance of justice to discussions around the concept of sustainable development, specifically sustainability in management. Our work initially analyzes the concept of justice from Western and Islamic perspectives, and secondly reviews discourses of Yusuf in the matter of justice. Lastly, it is attempted to derive concrete implications for a sustainable management from Yusuf's approach to justice.

İmam hatipler toplumun dini hizmetlerinin karşılanması amacıyla açılmış, milletin büyük teveccühü... more İmam hatipler toplumun dini hizmetlerinin karşılanması amacıyla açılmış, milletin büyük teveccühü ile Türk eğitim sisteminin mütemmim bir cüzü olmuştur. Ancak zamanla politik tartışmaların merkezinde kalan bu okullar zorlu süreçlerden geçmiştir. Siyaset, sosyoloji, pedagoji, psikoloji gibi çok farklı disiplinlerde bu okulları ele alan birçok bilimsel çalışma ortaya konmuştur. Bu makale imam hatiplere ilişkin Türkçe ve İngilizce yazılmış tez ve makaleleri inceleyerek mevcut literatüre dair bazı tespitler yapmayı hedeflemektedir. Çalışma kapsamında İmam hatip okullarını ele alan 219 araştırma değerlendirilmiş, taranan eserler konularına göre 10 ana başlık altında sınıflandırılmıştır. Tespitlerimize göre, bu alandaki akademik çalışmaların büyük bir kısmı 2011-2020 yılları arasında hazırlanmıştır. Türkçe yayınların daha çok müfredat ve derslerin içeriklerine yönelik olduğu görülürken, İngilizce makaleler konuya ağırlıklı olarak sosyo-politik bir tartışmanın merceğinden bakmıştır. Makalede önemli görülen bazı çalışmalar detaylı şekilde irdelenmiş, son olarak yeni yapılacak çalışmalara yönelik tavsiyeler paylaşılmıştır.

Nizam al-Mulk' s Siyasat-Nama and Yusuf Khass Hajib' s Kutadgu Bilig have had an enormous influen... more Nizam al-Mulk' s Siyasat-Nama and Yusuf Khass Hajib' s Kutadgu Bilig have had an enormous influence on the concept of public administration in the Turkish tradition. A review of the management literature shows that intellectual curiosity into Siyasat-Nama and Kutadgu Bilig is stuck on the level of sympathy. However, both thinkers deserve a deep scientific exploration by taking the administrative facet of their thoughts into account. The qualitative content analysis of these two texts exposes a list of attributes that make a ruler effective. Among them, justice, integrity, and benevolence are attributes that render administration ethical. This study firstly analyzes these ethical administrative attributes comprehensively aiming to discover how they are interconnected, and secondly links them to ongoing ethics-based discussions in order to derive concrete implications for contemporary business management. Briefly stated, integrity, justice, and benevolence in unison generate a framework of ethical administration. Each attribute has equally significant place in the system. To draw an analogy, integrity is the foundation of an administrative structure; justice is the structure itself, and benevolence is its ornament.

Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is re-discovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; data collected from Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies were analyzed using structural equation modelling. According to the results, while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR/CS and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that higher lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR/CS score.

Even though they were prima facia addressed kings and higher officers, they contain a great deal of universal advices applicable to any management and leadership context. So much so that scholars have realized the relevance of principles offered in these texts to management and especially to the field of business ethics. Confucius, Kautilya, Plato and Machiavelli have always been accepted as early management thinkers as their ideas inspired modern management from several perspectives. Considering this fact, this work aims to review 'books of advice' or 'mirrors' produced by different civilizations focusing their relevance to business ethics. What makes this work significant is firstly our focus on Islamic civilization which has been overlooked by scholars and secondly exposing a holistic perspective starting from 2500 BC till 16th century.

Obtaining a powerful authority and being spread on a large geographical area require religious coloring. One of the main characteristics of people who have gained control over many lands is their eager desire for virtuous behavior specifically benevolence. Whenever they start to “commit blameworthy deeds and to practice all sorts of vices”, God deprives them of royal authority. This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is in fact rediscovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Briefly, managerial sustainability could be qualified as a function of spirituality, virtuousness and corporate social responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; a statistical analysis among Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies was conducted. The results of the study show; while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR score. Araştırmanın amacı, çalışanların işyeri arkadaşlığı algısı ve işe adanmışlık düzeyleri arasındaki... more Araştırmanın amacı, çalışanların işyeri arkadaşlığı algısı ve işe adanmışlık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin anlamlılığının incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla araştırmaya İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Sağlık ve Hıfzıssıhha Müdürlüğünde görev yapan 121 iş gören katılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında İşyeri Arkadaşlığı Ölçeği ve Utrecht İşe Adanmışlık Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS programı üzerinde Faktör Analizi, Bağımsız Örnekler t-Testi, ANOVA ve Pearson Korelasyonu kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre katılımcıların işyerinde kurdukları arkadaşlıklara ilişkin değerlendirmeleri genel olarak olumludur. İşyeri arkadaşlığı cinsiyet, yaş, medeni durum gibi demografik faktörlerden etkilenmezken; eğitim seviyesi ve çalışılan birim işyeri arkadaşlığı üzerinde anlamlı farklılıklara yol açmaktadır. [ArticleInPress]Value-based leadership as an umbrella term including authentic, ethical, spiritua... more [ArticleInPress]Value-based leadership as an umbrella term including authentic, ethical, spiritual leadership, etc. indicates leading by remaining faithful to beliefs and values. This study aims to reveal the relevance of Islamic administration tradition to modern value-based leadership studies. In line with this purpose, Kutadgu Bilig, the oldest monument of the Islamic Turkish literature, was qualitatively inquired. The research design was grounded theory and data was analysed by content analysis using MaxQDA software. Kutadgu Bilig describes an outstanding leader with 23 attributes classified under six categories. While the model combines traits, behaviours, and values, that third one is an indispensable condition of efficiency. Looking across centuries, this comparative analysis reveals that the model grounded in Kutadgu Bilig bears the stamp of ethical and servant leadership. However, it places a premium on the virtuousness of the ruler at the individual level and on the attributes of justice and benevolence at the administrative level.2-s2.0-8512097709

This study aimed to examine the effect of motivation on work performance. A quantitative research... more This study aimed to examine the effect of motivation on work performance. A quantitative research was conducted with the participation of 188 employees working at Ziraat Bank of Bosnia-Herzegovina through a questionnaire consisting of demographic information form, performance, and motivation scales. The study concluded that gender, age, and duration of service in the current institution did not significantly affect performance and motivation. However, education level, marital status, income level, and total work experience made a significant difference in task performance, motivation, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation, respectively. Moreover, while a moderately positive relationship was found between task performance and intrinsic motivation, contextual performance was determined to be associated with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation moderately and weakly, respectively. Moreover, it assesses at which stage Ethiopian CSR is. This mixed-method study includes quantitative analysis through SPSS and qualitative content analysis. A revised CSR practices scale has been conducted on owners/managers and employees of 100 local companies in Ethiopia. Besides, the companies' official websites have been thoroughly reviewed using five variables to understand their CSR approaches and practices better. The findings reveal that Ethiopian companies practice CSR though it is at the stage of fragmented CSR and the priorities differ from the global trend. Most respondent companies generally have excellent legal practices and CSR practices toward employees and customers. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; data collected from Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies were analyzed using structural equation modelling. According to the results, while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR/CS and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that higher lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR/CS score.

Even though they were prima facia addressed kings and higher officers, they contain a great deal of universal advices applicable to any management and leadership context. So much so that scholars have realized the relevance of principles offered in these texts to management and especially to the field of business ethics. Confucius, Kautilya, Plato and Machiavelli have always been accepted as early management thinkers as their ideas inspired modern management from several perspectives. Considering this fact, this work aims to review 'books of advice' or 'mirrors' produced by different civilizations focusing their relevance to business ethics. What makes this work significant is firstly our focus on Islamic civilization which has been overlooked by scholars and secondly exposing a holistic perspective starting from 2500 BC till 16th century.

Obtaining a powerful authority and being spread on a large geographical area require religious coloring. One of the main characteristics of people who have gained control over many lands is their eager desire for virtuous behavior specifically benevolence. Whenever they start to “commit blameworthy deeds and to practice all sorts of vices”, God deprives them of royal authority. This work firstly aims to develop a sustainability model based on Ibn Haldun’s teaching. Religious coloring refers to the spirituality, which is in fact rediscovered in modern ages and transferred to the workplace. Spirituality stimulates virtuousness at personal and organizational level, which in turn generates managerial sustainability meaning the lifespan of a company. While personal virtuousness refers social ethics, organizational level virtuousness could be considered as Corporate Social Responsibility. Briefly, managerial sustainability could be qualified as a function of spirituality, virtuousness and corporate social responsibility. Secondly, it attempts to evaluate the relevance of Ibn Haldun’s approach to contemporary business organizations. In order to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality, virtuousness, CSR, and sustainability; a statistical analysis among Corporate Knights’ Global 100 companies was conducted. The results of the study show; while workplace spirituality leads to ethical conduct and higher CSR/CS score, the relationship between spirituality or CSR and financial performance is not significant. However, it seems that lifespan of business enterprises is related to their CSR score. Araştırmanın amacı, çalışanların işyeri arkadaşlığı algısı ve işe adanmışlık düzeyleri arasındaki... more Araştırmanın amacı, çalışanların işyeri arkadaşlığı algısı ve işe adanmışlık düzeyleri arasındaki ilişkinin anlamlılığının incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla araştırmaya İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Sağlık ve Hıfzıssıhha Müdürlüğünde görev yapan 121 iş gören katılmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında İşyeri Arkadaşlığı Ölçeği ve Utrecht İşe Adanmışlık Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Veriler SPSS programı üzerinde Faktör Analizi, Bağımsız Örnekler t-Testi, ANOVA ve Pearson Korelasyonu kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre katılımcıların işyerinde kurdukları arkadaşlıklara ilişkin değerlendirmeleri genel olarak olumludur. İşyeri arkadaşlığı cinsiyet, yaş, medeni durum gibi demografik faktörlerden etkilenmezken; eğitim seviyesi ve çalışılan birim işyeri arkadaşlığı üzerinde anlamlı farklılıklara yol açmaktadır. İmam hatipler toplumun dini hizmetlerinin karşılanması amacıyla açılmış, milletin büyük teveccühü... more İmam hatipler toplumun dini hizmetlerinin karşılanması amacıyla açılmış, milletin büyük teveccühü ile Türk eğitim sisteminin mütemmim bir cüzü olmuştur. Ancak zamanla politik tartışmaların merkezinde kalan bu okullar zorlu süreçlerden geçmiştir. Siyaset, sosyoloji, pedagoji, psikoloji gibi çok farklı disiplinlerde bu okulları ele alan birçok bilimsel çalışma ortaya konmuştur. Bu makale imam hatiplere ilişkin Türkçe ve İngilizce yazılmış tez ve makaleleri inceleyerek mevcut literatüre dair bazı tespitler yapmayı hedeflemektedir. Çalışma kapsamında İmam hatip okullarını ele alan 219 araştırma değerlendirilmiş, taranan eserler konularına göre 10 ana başlık altında sınıflandırılmıştır. Tespitlerimize göre, bu alandaki akademik çalışmaların büyük bir kısmı 2011-2020 yılları arasında hazırlanmıştır. Türkçe yayınların daha çok müfredat ve derslerin içeriklerine yönelik olduğu görülürken, İngilizce makaleler konuya ağırlıklı olarak sosyo-politik bir tartışmanın merceğinden bakmıştır. Makalede önemli görülen bazı çalışmalar detaylı şekilde irdelenmiş, son olarak yeni yapılacak çalışmalara yönelik tavsiyeler paylaşılmıştır.

This study aims to reveal the relevance of Islamic administration tradition to modern value-based leadership studies. In line with this purpose, Kutadgu Bilig, the oldest monument of the Islamic Turkish literature, was qualitatively inquired. The research design was grounded theory and data was analysed by content analysis using MaxQDA software. Kutadgu Bilig describes an outstanding leader with 23 attributes classified under six categories. While the model combines traits, behaviours, and values, that third one is an indispensable condition of efficiency. Looking across centuries, this comparative analysis reveals that the model grounded in Kutadgu Bilig bears the stamp of ethical and servant leadership. However, it places a premium on the virtuousness of the ruler at the individual level and on the attributes of justice and benevolence at the administrative level.2-s2.0-8512097709

A quantitative research was conducted with the participation of 188 employees working at Ziraat Bank of Bosnia-Herzegovina through a questionnaire consisting of demographic information form, performance, and motivation scales. The study concluded that gender, age, and duration of service in the current institution did not significantly affect performance and motivation. However, education level, marital status, income level, and total work experience made a significant difference in task performance, motivation, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation, respectively. Moreover, while a moderately positive relationship was found between task performance and intrinsic motivation, contextual performance was determined to be associated with intrinsic and extrinsic motivation moderately and weakly, respectively. Moreover, it assesses at which stage Ethiopian CSR is. This mixed-method study includes quantitative analysis through SPSS and qualitative content analysis. A revised CSR practices scale has been conducted on owners/managers and employees of 100 local companies in Ethiopia. Besides, the companies' official websites have been thoroughly reviewed using five variables to understand their CSR approaches and practices better. The findings reveal that Ethiopian companies practice CSR though it is at the stage of fragmented CSR and the priorities differ from the global trend. Most respondent companies generally have excellent legal practices and CSR practices toward employees and customers.
