It has done a complete study of the archaeological information available from the several documentary sources (bibliography, IPAC, etc.). This has lead to an interpretative update on the forms of occupation and settlement dynamics developed in the study area during the 5th BC to 1st century AD. Preliminary results of the archaeomorphological analysis focused primarily on the road network are also presented. The first results highlight the importance of territorial organization programs of the late 2nd BC and 1st century BC. In this sense, it has been documented a close relationship between the road network and the distribution of rural settlements in late-Republican and Augustan periods. The use of databases in the management of archaeological information, and especially the application of GIS in the analysis and interpretation of data, suggest new interpretive...

In this sense, the area of study, placed in the Vallès basin, near the city of Barcelona, has known an important process of urbanization in the last two decades. This fact restrains the retrieving of archaeological data and the development of archaeological surveys and field-walking. The particular topography of the area must also be taken into account. It is characterised by soft slopes resulting from a differentiated seasonal rainfall. Archaeomorphological analysis has been therefore reconsidered in order to adapt its methods and techniques to this particular environment. The destruction of large agrarian areas implies that landscape morphology research must focus on an intensive work through historical cartography and old aerial photography within a gis environment. The article presents the results of the archaeological research developed in this area. The methodological approach previously exposed and the diversity of sources analysed has allowed us to characterize the ancient road network and to identify field systems from different periods

The penetration of the vegetation cover by the laser beam allows the reconstruction of reliable digital terrain models (DTM) of forested areas where traditional prospection methods are inefficient, time-consuming and non-exhaustive. The ALS technology provides the opportunity to discover new archaeological features hidden by vegetation and provides a comprehensive survey of cultural heritage sites within their environmental context. However, the post-processing of LiDAR points clouds produces a huge quantity of data in which relevant archaeological features are not easily detectable with common visualizing and analysing tools. Undoubtedly, there is an urgent need for automation of structures detection and morphometric extraction techniques, especially for the "archaeological desert" in densely forested ar...

Analysing the relationship between societies, climate and environments through time, these studies contribute to define adequate policies and strategies for socio-environmental management, protection and legacy. Two complementary case studies– Aydat lake and Espinasse fen - from the south of the Chaîne des Puys (Auvergne, Massif Central, France) are presented. The analysis of these sedimentological records (both lacustrine and peat) follows a multi-proxy approach combining abiotic and biotic palaeoindicators (density, magnetic susceptibility, X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry, Rock-Eval, pollen, non-pollen palynomorphs, molecular biomarkers). Aydat lake and Espinasse fen analyses were performed following a high spatio-temporal resolution. Results underline that long-term models of detrital input and eutrophication correspond to compl...

Within the framework of this project, has been carried out a biannual archaeological prospection program (2008-2009) aimed at improving the quantity and the quality of archaeological information available.
The archaeological surveys and fieldwalking have allowed us:
a) to check the basic information about the archaeological sites (location, extension, typology, chronology);
b) to enlarge (and to improve) the archaeological data;
c) to identify the news archaeological sites.
This paper is focused on the contribution of archaeology prospection to the diachronic study of the ancient rural settlement dynamics.

This fact restrains the retrieving of archaeological data and the development of archaeological surveys and fieldwalking. In this sense, landscape research in urban or peri-urban areas implies important methodological constraints. However, several reports from rescue excavations are available. They are a very useful source for territorial research. The particular topography of the area must also be taken into account. It is characterized by soft slopes resulting from a differentiated seasonal rainfall. Archaeomorphological analysis has been therefore reconsidered in order to adapt its methods and techniques to this particular environment.
This paper presents the results of the digital archaeomorfological analysis which have been correlated with historical and archaeological data in order to allow us to characterize the historical road network and territorial organization from a long-term perspective, together with settlement evolution and landscape dynamics in Roman times.
The landscape morphology research has been developed from an intensive work which involves photo-interpretation and the study of old maps within a GIS environment. This has been especially important because of landscape major changes in large rural areas. The archaeological data resulting from the research over the last years has also been carefully revised in order to plan the archaeological and archaeomorfological surveys developed in several micro-regional sectors.

Our work seeks the integration of two research lines in the studied area:

-Archaeological and archaeo-morphological surveys in a lower part of the mountains in order to characterize the evolution of the settlements and field systems.
-The geological and geomorphological characterization of the slope and terraces deposits in relation with field systems and archaeological data.

First results point out the intensive occupation of these inland areas during the Iberian and the Roman periods. Post-Roman sediments show different processes of erosion.

Images obtained by the processing of LIDAR data show the overlay of archaeological structures fossilized in the territory, highlighting the diachronic origin of cultural landscapes. In this context, archaeomorphological approaches can provide theoretical and methodological tools for a diachronic “reading” of human-made landscape forms, and these can be useful for understanding the landscape genesis and its evolution as a social and cultural product.
A LIDAR flight undertaken in 2011 in the Chaîne des Puys revealed agro-pastoral structures that had gone unnoticed under the forest protection area of Parc Régional des Volcans d’Auvergne. These facts gave rise to the LIDARCHEO research project (2012-2013), directed by F. Vautier and E. Roussel (Maison des Sciences de l’Homme de Clermont-Ferrand, France), and funded by Clermont Communauté. The project has combined the research of geomorphologists, geographers, archaeologists, historians and specialists in image processing with the aim of developing tools for automatic detection of archaeological structures from LIDAR data. The project allowed us to conduct the first archaeological study of agro-pastoral structures concentrated to the west of the Puy de Dôme. Moreover, it provided further data on buildings in the western sector of the Col de Ceyssat Roman site.
Archaeomorphological study has been developed in a GIS database environment including; LIDAR digital terrain models (MDT), local relief models by LIDAR data (LRM), topographical and hydrographical vectorial information, old maps and old cadastral maps. It has also included archaeological surveys, micro-topographic measuring using a total station, archival and documentary research. Archaeomorphological analysis has allowed us to establish different types of agro-pastoral structures that have then been verified by archaeological surveys. Different chronological phases have also been identified between archaeological structures. Finally, morpho-typological analysis has been used to develop automatic detection algorithms.
This work hitghlights the contribution of archaeomorphological analysis into the study and diachronic interpretation of a mid-mountain cultural landscape from LIDAR data. Furthermore, it illustrates the role of the Archaeomorphology in the development and calibration of tools for automatic detection of archaeological structures from LIDAR data. Thus, Archaeomorphology is a discipline that can offer a wide range of methods and techniques for the study of cultural landscape configuration, as aiding the comprehension and interpretation of associated historical processes.
