Jack Shoegazer's ICONOMICON! (original) (raw)

Brethren of the ICONOMICON! It has been too long and archaic studies have prevented your humble Keeper from spreading the iconic message of the Almighty ICONOMICON!
BEHOLD:
( Whether someone's belief is true is not a prerequisite for its belief. On the other hand, if something is actually known, then it categorically cannot be false. For example, a person believes that a particular bridge is safe enough to support him, and attempts to cross it; unfortunately, the bridge collapses under his weight. It could be said that he believed that the bridge was safe, but that this belief was mistaken. It would not be accurate to say that he knew that the bridge was safe, because plainly it was not. By contrast, if the bridge actually supported his weight then he might say he thought that the bridge was safe, and now after proving it to himself, he knows. Epistemologists argue over whether belief is the proper truth-bearer. Some would rather describe knowledge as a system of justified true propositions, and others as a system of justified true sentences. But belief is the most commonly invoked truth bearer, since Plato's day.Collapse )

Oh Brethren! Another winter break has come to pass and woe is a shadow over my shoulder as another semester looms in my future! It is with wonder and hope that this iconic bounty can be the light that shines through the murk of studies! Let this random combobulation of Lisbeth Salander, astronaut suicides, Sherlock & Watson, string art, sixties fashion, The Greatest American Hero, eighties weirdness, and much more, be a beacon in these dark time! Enjoy!
TEASERS:
( The shape or geometry of the universe includes both local geometry in the observable universe and global geometry, which we may or may not be able to measure. Shape can refer to curvature and topology. More formally, the subject in practice investigates which 3-manifold corresponds to the spatial section in comoving coordinates of the four-dimensional space-time of the universe.Collapse )
P.S. I've started an ICONOMICON! tumblr. I don't know if I'll be able to post all of the source images that I use there, but I'm going to try. I also have a personal tumblr, where I post pictures from my phone, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Dearest Brethren! One of the faithful members of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON! had a divinely-inspired idea to do a retrospective of old ICONOMICON! posts to double as a reminder to go and vote for Jacquelyn Gill (my wife who named the ICONOMICON!) for the 2011 College Blogging Scholarship. P.S. Dearest Brethren of the ICONOMICON, I have a humble request. My wife is a finalist for the 2011 College Blogging Scholarship for her excellent blog The Contemplative Mammoth. Brethren!
I have returned from my glorious wedding! It was fantastic and ecstatic. I'd have invited you all, but, you know, $45 a plate for dinner multiplied by the 6000+ Brethren of the ICONOMICON! was a little out of my price range.

I was not able to get all of the Wedding Donation graphics completed before I left, but now that I'm back, I will be getting back to work on those right away, so watch your LJ notifications. Thanks again to all those who donated. It was a truly magical and transformative experience and you helped make that happen.
With love,

( Zeta Reticuli Greys come from Zeta Reticulan, the 4th planet out from Zeta2 Reticulum, near Barnard's Star, which is a neighboring star system to Orion. The constellation Reticulum is a fairly small collection of faint stars, of which zeta is barely visible to the naked eye.Collapse )
P.S. Thank you all who have donated so far. Most of you have received your donation graphics, but there's still a few of you I haven't gotten to yet. If you haven't donated, there is still time - the wedding is one month away! So please, click to DONATE or visit jackart to buy some prints!

Salutations, dearest Brethren of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON! With this batch of iconomic goodies, I come bearing news of good tidings! Yours truly, the humble Keeper of the ICONOMICON! is getting married! To the lovely woman who named the ICONOMICON! It is a match made in Heaven!
Why does this concern you, dear Brethren of the ICONOMICON? Previously you all came together to help me in a great time of need, and again, I humble myself before you. I am trying to raise money to help pay for the wedding. Between medical bills and divorce (the irony, I know), our families are unable to give us a hand, so we're paying for most of the wedding on our own.
The membership of the ICONOMICON! is so much bigger now, so if every member donated 3,thatwouldpayforthewholewedding,whichIamofcoursenotaskingfor:DHowever,ifeverymemberdonatedfiftycents,orhalfthemembersdonated3, that would pay for the whole wedding, which I am of course not asking for :D However, if every member donated fifty cents, or half the members donated 3,thatwouldpayforthewholewedding,whichIamofcoursenotaskingfor:DHowever,ifeverymemberdonatedfiftycents,orhalfthemembersdonated1, or a quarter of the members donated $2 (you get the picture) that would more than cover the amount we're coming up short. Like last time, I am not asking for blind handouts!
I will make custom icons or banners for anyone who donates $5 or more. I am a fairly accomplished graphic designer and will also do other custom graphics you may need. Email me and we can work out details. Unlike with my surgery, you don't have to wait until I get back and recuperate – I'll get started on your graphics straight away! Also, if icons aren't your thing, I am also still selling prints of my photography at jackart!
If you can help, that would be amazing. Think of this as the pledge drive for the ICONOMICON! If you love the ICONOMICON! and have benefited from the six years and 17,000 icons available here, if your internet experience has been enhanced by these little 100x100 squares, please donate!
When donating through PayPal, please put your LJ name in the comments. Thank you in advance to anyone who is able to help. I appreciate this more than words or icons can express.
Thank you,
Jack Shoegazer
And last but not least, the latest icon post!
TEASERS:
( Although the institution of marriage pre-dates reliable recorded history, many cultures have legends concerning the origins of marriage. The way in which a marriage is conducted and its rules and ramifications has changed over time, as has the institution itself.Collapse )

Oh, ye Brethren of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON! The semester of your humble Keeper, Jack Shoegazer, has come to an end and he suddenly has extra time for archiving the bountiful randomness of the ICONOMICON! Behold this first batch of spring, with a more plentiful bounty to follow! Enjoy!
TEASERS:
( The depiction of Shiva as Nataraja, Lord of Dance, is popular. The names Nartaka and Nityanarta appear in the Shiva Sahasranama. His association with dance and also with music is prominent in the Puranic period. In addition to the specific iconographic form known as Nataraja, various other types of dancing forms are found in all parts of India, with many well-defined varieties in Tamil Nadu in particular. The two most common forms of the dance are the Tandava, which later came to denote the powerful and masculine dance as Kala-Mahakala associated with the destruction of the world.Collapse )
P.S. A mighty THANK YOU to the fabulous benefactors of the ICONOMICON! msb66, dakini_grl, anonymous, and we_got_caught – you are amazing!

Oh Brethren, ye Brethren, tis the first offering of the new Gregorian year and what a mighty bounty it is! If it ever did, this time randomness truly knows no bounds! Indeed, this chaotic catastrophe of creativeness collides with your consciousness to create a constellation of commotion, a collusion of cheer, a conflagration of captivation! Enjoy!
TEASERS:
( The constellation is better known as Serpentarius, the Serpent Holder, and is the only sign of the Zodiac which is linked to a real man. This man lived in ancient Egypt around the 27th century BCE, and his name was Imhotep, who is said to have brought healing to mankind. Imhotep was known as Aesclepius by the Ancient Greeks and his serpent or snake symbol is still used today to symbolize the medical profession.Collapse )
P.S. The All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON! is being watched by over 6000 people! HUZZAH!

Brethren of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON! Be aware that the solstice is coming and along with it the derived holidays of many names! In such traditions, there is a, uh, tradition, of gift-giving, and for that reason, I have graced your pages this day! Behold, a mighty bounty of iconic giftmas!
TEASERS:
( According to myths dating to the beginning of the 19th century, Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas; Santa Claus) operated by himself or in the companionship of a devil, Zwarte Piet. Having triumphed over evil, it was said that on Saint Nicholas Eve, the devil was shackled and made his slave. A devil as a helper of the Saint can also still be found in Austrian Saint Nicholas tradition in the character of Krampus.Collapse )

Oh, Dearest Brethren of the All-Seeing, All-Knowing, Almighty ICONOMICON!
Your humble Keeper has a mighty bounty of icons in the works, channeling their effluent essence down from the Heavens and up from the Hells of Teh Intarwebz.
While you wait for this fructifying bounty of iconomic goodness, feel free to pray at the temples of other fine icon providers. No, the ICONOMICON! is not a jealous god! Be fruitful and multiply!
It is also that most wretched time of year when the demon PhotoBucket requires its annual tithing. IF any of you dear Brethren are interested in subsidizing the hosting of the Almighty ICONOMICON! please message me, the humble Keeper of this iconic archive.

Oh ye Brethren of the Almighty ICONOMICON! Hear the divine chime of church bells, the herald of a celestial bounty of tiny, thousand-pixel gifts! Three-hundred-and-fifty-two tidings await the faithful who dare to click the cut and enter the Holiest of Holies! Ask and ye shall receive!
TEASERS:
( Feminism has changed traditional perspectives on a wide range of areas in human life, from culture to law. Feminist activists have campaigned for women's legal rights—such as rights of contract, property rights, and voting rights—while also promoting women's rights to bodily integrity and autonomy, abortion rights, and reproductive rights. They have struggled to protect women and girls from domestic violence, sexual harassment, and rape. On economic matters, feminists have advocated for workplace rights, including maternity leave and equal pay, and against other forms of gender-specific discrimination against women.Collapse )
