The chapter discusses the simplified procedure adopted in IS 456:2000 code (Clause-23.2). The detailed calculation of deflection in IS 456:2000 code book is discussed in Annex-C of the code which is not discussed herein but can be found from the previously uploaded paper namely "Analysis and Design of T-beam bridge over Rangiya Nala using Limit State Method". Hence readers interested in further reading on deflection can download the above said paper on bridge and see the deflection check part. Here only the simplified method is discussed.

Research paper thumbnail of ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF T-BEAM BRIDGE SUPER STRUCTURE USING LIMIT STATE METHOD

The paper presented herein deals with the analysis and design of T-beam bridge super structure us... more The paper presented herein deals with the analysis and design of T-beam bridge super structure using Limit State Method of design irrespective of conventional Working Stress Method of design. Indian standard code is followed and basically the design is governed and carried out by using IRC-112 : 2011 code book and IS-456 : 2000 code book. I am extremely excited to see the response of the readers and will remain indebted to those who will feed me back with the necessary modifications, corrections and sort comings if any.

The bridge analysed herein has a span length of 18.33 meters and total length of 55 meters. As the length of the bridge is lesser than 60 meters and is situated in sesmic zone-III, there is no need of sesmic analysis. Also nearby clumsy structures and environment will protect the bridge from the wind and hence rigorous wind effect will not be experienced at the site. However, wind analysis is also carried out referring to Indian Standard code IS-875. Besides that, other IRC codes like IRC-6 (all editions) are used for obtaining data on loading standards especially on vehicular loading.

The analysis is carried out using Limit State Method of Design which is the latest as well as most economic method and is widely used across the globe in all most all advanced countries. The method justifies the use of reserve strength and thereby saves considerably the material used.

Also as per American Society of Civil Engineers, it's monument of the millennium in the year 2001. This airport has its unique construction track record not only due to its floating nature, but also due to challenges faced during construction. The challenges include the construction of Sea wall, Geotechnical Engineering challenge in counteracting rapid sinking as well as catalyzing the consolidation process. Also structural challenges like construction of structural element as well as grapevine of the typhoons and earthquake.
I am hopeful that new minds in Civil Engineering will find it helpful in knowing the challenges in airport engineering and structural engineering including Geo-Technical engineering besides their academic benefits. Also detailed explanation on the operation will be beneficial for airport planning.

The Chinese engineers however managed to overcome the challenges like permafrost, provision of steady gradient and tunneling especially at a height of 4.9 km above Mean Sea Level. Also at such a height the oxygen level is another short coming for passengers. This presentation merely discusses the challenges and its solution. It's expected that young students and university students will find this presentation handy for getting a brief idea on the engineering challenges especially in railway engineering in frozen areas.
(Note: This presentation is best viewed in MS office-2010 and above and windows media player of win-7 and above)

The project is first of its kind and 2nd spectacular project after Panama canal. Kansai international airport is constructed keeping an eye on the population of Japan. when there is no land for living, there is no question of finding an airport on the land. Besides that the noise pollution due to air craft landing etc. would have made the life miserable. That's why scientists found this suitable off shore.

The airport has two terminals and two runways. Along with that it serves over 30 countries and around 800 international flights each week. The airport sinking at its primary stage was an issue which is solved up to a great extent now. Overall, this airport is finest art of civil engineering.
