We focus on organizational differences as a key factor in perceiving and participating in a social movement such as Occupy Gezi in 2013. During the Gezi protests, the ultras groups UltrAslan and Çarşı were two collective actors who participated in the movement, making use of their group identity at different moments. However, while the first withdrew early from the protests, the second group remained active. Following a Weberian perspective, we postulate that all ultras groups can be positioned on an elitist/universality continuum according to their historical trajectory. Therefore, the organizational model reflects the group’s collective identity and its particular worldviews that shape differentiated ways of framing politics.

It is generally the visibility of Muslim identities and practices of Islam that are at the centre of these tensions. This article shows in the context of French republican laïcité that religious issues are considered as private issues that should not play out openly in the workplace, which is considered to have a more public character. With a focus on the French labour law framework and religious discrimination issues, interviews with elected politicians, religious leaders, unionists, representatives of civil society organisations and legal experts show that religious discrimination in the French workplace is a more complex phenomenon than it seems. Discrimination of religious employees, in a direct or indirect manner, happens more often than is officially reported in France. Many respondents suggested that a great deal of religious discrimination is, at best, reframed as ethnicity-based or gender-based discrimination. The article also discusses some recent examples of businesses that treat the issue of religious diversity in the French workplace in a more pragmatic manner, opening up more possibilities for reasonable accommodation.

This chapter shows, the political marginalisation of the community in the Turkish republic since the collapse of the Ottoman empire has created the foundation for a renewal and a degree of re-invention, as Turkish official restraints have been withdrawn in recent decades, and émigré communities in western Europe have taken advantage of the greater space for maneouvre which the political environments there afford. With a focus on France this chapter discusses how different strategies are being tested both internally within the community and externally in relation to the authorities with a view to maximizing the political and other benefits perceived to be available. Through the redefinition of Alevi movement, the chapter argues that today one of the main objectives of the European Alevi leaders is to transform Alevi meaning-making processes which frame the claims and the movement itself; and that the Alevi politicization in Europe is still closely tied to the Turkish political field
