Carmona’s Page in Los Angeles Hip-Hop History : Childhood photo taken around 1978 of T-Love and Big Tittie Nickie of Dr. Dre’s Chronic Album

October 27, 2023

We had no idea, back when this photo was taken of us clowning around, where our lives would evolve to.

We had no idea that Dr. Dre’s BabyMama (please see link below) would move to the house right behind us in this photo. It would be on this front lawn that we would meet Dr. Dre for the very first time.

This association would lead to all those who lived on the 1600 block of Carmona having a first row seat to the birth of hip-hop culture in Los Angeles that which I wrote about in the book It’s Not About a Salary (Verso 1993). This association with Dr. Dre’s BabyMama would lead me to befriending Jerry Heller (RIP) and to Ruthless Records trying to sign me. It would also later lead to my childhood friend appearing on “The $20 Sack Pyramid (Skit)” on Dre’s legendary Chronic album as Big Tittie Nickie.

Years after this photo was taken, I can’t say that our paths crossed very much but I can say that we each have our own unique and valid Los Angeles hip-hop hers-story.

Classic review : The Chronic in The Source (1993)

December 8, 2008

I’ve been doing this blog for two years now, and I just realize that I haven’t posted the Chronic review from The Source yet. The review was written by Matty c, but for some reason was signed by The Mind Squad, the collective name used by the staff writers. Published in february 1993.

Freestyling With The Fellowship : Freestyle Fellowship in Rap Sheet (1993)

June 12, 2008

Long story on the Freestyle Fellowship, Mad Kap, Pharcyde and the Good Life from Rap Sheet, july 1993. Sorry for the bad quality, but you know how cheap Rap Sheet paper was. Audio is quite recent, it’s Pharcyde’s leader Fatlip with Heavyweight MC (and unseen force behind this blog) T-Love from the Jazz Liberatorz album. T-Love new album is coming out in september, but we’ll talk about that later…

A Gangsta’s World View : Ice Cube in The Source (1990)

October 4, 2007

Ice Cube was on the cover of the 1990 summer issue of The Source, no interview inside but a strange analysis supporting Ice Cube’s chauvinistic stance.

To fully understand the last paragraph (“Why do my posse and I have fun shouting along with Ice Cube ? He caters to our fantasies in a world where we feel so powerless.”), you have to realize that the writer Dan Charnas is a white american male who, at that time, was a&r at Tommy Boy Profile..

Audio is Ice Cube, Sir Jinx and K-Dee first single.

Classic Review : Doggystyle in The Source (1994)

April 10, 2007

Review of Snoop’s first album in The Source, which was treated with a so-so rating (compared to the 4.5 mics of Enter The Wu-Tang in the same issue), thus giving us another proof of their legendary east-coast biais. February 1994.
