Based on archival documents and published sources, an attempt is made to reconstruct the historiographical "fields of tension" that influenced this outstanding monument to Polish interwar historiography.

The primary meaning of the word catastrophe is the unexpected but logical conclusion of a play. Although the word "catastrophe" has changed its meaning, it still retains its connotation. It is not a meaningless ending. History cannot be the cure for catastrophe in the classical sense. Its effects are well described by the idea of Pharmakon, which we can find in Plato. Pharmakon is both a medicine and a poison. A person suffering a catastrophe is not cured, but rather is inebriated by history. It is what gives one the strength to survive the trauma of catastrophe. Historians are no
exception.
The second half of the article is a concrete example (case‑study) of how, under the guise of objective studies of historical documents, historians create realities that help them to relive (but not cure) the trauma of catastrophe. Often the historical source is perceived as an immutable,
natural basis for the construction of a historical narrative. A historical source has no nationality, but it can obtain it. The most popular and simple way is the publication of new (or first) historical sources edition as "nationals" This article examines a specific example of the race
between Polish and German historians (after 1945) on the issue of publishing historical sources concerning mediaeval Silesian history. Since the very same documents had to be published, the primacy in publication of new editions had to determine its "nationality".

For analysis, materials were selected for 1945-1949. i.e. until the beginning of the intensification of ideological pressure on Polish science. In particular, the article analyzes the work of Kazimir Piwarski, Karol Maleczyński, and Władysław Czapliński. Special attention was paid to the issue of studying by these authors of relations between the Silesian principalities and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism and the use of general scientific and specially-historical methods. The scientific novelty of the article consists of the fact, that, for the first time, the Ukrainian historiography called attention to the problems of Silesian historiography. Concluded that was possibility of
gradual acceptance to the principles of Marxist historiography by wroclawian scientists on their own initiative because this methodological approach allowed them to join the expectations of the Polish society and the ideals of scientific knowledge in the situations when was about the question of the bond of Silesia with the rest of the Polish lands.

Th e main purpose is the analysis of the particu-lar works from the fi rst publications in the eighteenth century to the most famous projects of the second half of the twentieth century. Th e focal hypothesis is that the selection and preparation of documents for publication were, on the one hand, closely connected to the general historical and historiosophic view of the region, and on the other, these documents themselves clearly infl uenced the way Polish and German historians perceived the region.

Из это следует не только то, что в каждой эпохе можно будет встретить ее [нации] представителей или ее предков, но и то, что современные границы государства можно легко перенести в прошлое.

K. Maleczynski graduated the John Casimir University in Lviv, where he studied with S. Zakrzewski and J. Ptasnik. After defense of a thesis K. Maleczynski works in the Lviv Archive. He doesn’t lose touch with university, pursuing science. He took an interest in the history of Poland during the reign of Piast and medieval diplomatic. In 1929 took Doctor’s degree and in 1939 became a professor of the John Casimir University in Lviv. After World War II K. Maleczyński with his family moves to Wroclaw. He actively was engaged in the organization of department of history of the Wroclaw University. He also wrote the first polish scientific work devoted to medieval Silesia and Wroclaw. K. Maleczyński quickly accepted the doctrine of Marxism and still it is considered one of the chief representatives of a Marxist Polish historiography. In this article the author attempts to investigate the main stages of K. Maleczyński life and to explain the features of his scientific career after the Second World War. The author draws attention to the fact that postwar changes have given to historian the possibility of social growth, which he was deprived of in Lviv. Also the author tries
to put forth the thesis that the history of medieval Silesia interested K. Maleczynski even during his life in Lviv and he came to Wroclaw with already formed ideas about the history of Western Poland and Silesia.
