The River Rhine served as an artery for the re-exports of sugar, coffee, tobacco, and other tropical items from the Dutch Republic to the German hinterland. Although some estimates about the importance of this trade do exist, these are based upon scant data. This article presents a plausible scenario of this trade based on a variety of sources. It finds that the Rhine trade grew rapidly during and in the decade after the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), experienced sharp declines during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784), after the Haitian Revolution (1793), and during the French Occupation – particularly under the Continental System (1806-1810) – to resume its steady growth in the nineteenth century. Moreover, much of this eighteenth-century growth was due to slave-produced commodities, which indicates that the Rhine became a crucial connection between ...

This article describes how anarcho-syndicalist tendencies expanded into Pernambuco's agricultural interior in the beginning of the twentieth century. The investigation can be divided into three parts: first, the reception of people in Pernambuco's rural area to these new ideas; second, the channels through which anarcho-syndicalism spread; third, the means by which the ideas were propagated. Keywords: anarchism; syndicalism; Pernambuco

Although the Dutch held some colonies with slave plantations, 60% of total sugar imports came from France. Substantial amounts were re-exported again, increasingly over the Rhine to upper Germany. This article studies how this European distribution network of colonial commodities was organized, and who benefited from this trade. Sugar had to be processed before final consumption. How did this affect the organization of trade, and the possible strategies of the actors involved? Drawing on the material from the Amsterdam City Archive (notarial, private business, and shipping records), this article reconstructs the commodity chain. , some insight is provided into the networks and types of construction used. Subsequently, a comparison of prices and qualities at various points along the supply chain reveals the importance of the market variety in shaping the transnational distribution of overseas commodities.

It highlights the role of the Dutch in this chain and in the intra-European trade. This study shows how the market for coffee was being expanded over the course of less than a century. It shows how consumption reached a mass scale and spread to inland regions on the European continent, notably to German regions along the Rhine river. The article aims to emphasise how this dynamic of market expansion was linked to the expansion of slavery in Dutch Guiana and the French West Indies, especially the rapid growth of Saint Domingue. Finally, this article highlights the importance of this coffee expansion to the Dutch economy. Based on collected data from numerous sources, this article calculates that the share of coffee in Dutch trade value grew from 1% to 9.5% over the course of the eighteenth century and was pivotal to the changing orientation of Dutch foreign trade...
