Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Work Group Processes on Work Place Satisfaction and Performances - Evidence from University Class Groups Studies

IOSR Journal of Business and Management, 2014

This study investigates the impact of work group composition on work place satisfaction and perfo... more This study investigates the impact of work group composition on work place satisfaction and performances using results from experimental study of students from three groups in University of Gothenburg Sweden management class working groups. Work group composition is measured here by considering factors such language, nationality and culture among group members. Language had a positive and significant effect on workplace performance; this was also probably true since effective communication skill was likely to make working groups work in a hitch free manner. While culture on the other hand has a negative and statistical significant effect on workplace satisfaction, this was likely to be true since punctuality, individual comportment, and work ethics were likely factors that member of working groups take seriously when working as a team in groups. The horizontal flow of information (knowledge transfer) was also found to depend on work group output performances. This was reasonable, since how efficient work groups and sub groups within the groups efficiently carried out their tasks will depend on the horizontal flow of information in groups. The evidence presented in this study shows that issues of nationality was not relevant to individual group members overall satisfaction in participating in groups nor was it vital to overall group performances. The results could be beneficial to organization management particularly those that wish to improve overall output productivity since class work groups experimental studies are a miniature study of organizations, the implications of this study is that language and culture could improve organizational output productivity substantially since language could contributes significantly to organizational performances and work ethics is also likely to create workplace satisfaction which can contribute in a significant way to organizational output.

Most of the western established instruments for measuring environmental attitudes lack appropriat... more Most of the western established instruments for measuring environmental attitudes lack appropriate validation among Nigerian population because cultural variation may influence the individual's experience. A 20-item Likert type scale was developed and used to measure attitudes toward environmental issues among 1200 participants in Southwestern , Nigeria between 15 to 76 years with a mean age of 24.49 years (SD = 8.51). Results of a Principal Component Analysis using Varimax factor rotation produced three factors with Eigen values of more than 1 which accounted for 44.896% of the total variance. The reliability analysis yielded a Cronbach Alpha of 0.64 and Spearman-Brown split-half reliability of 0.71 obtained for the scale was considered conceptually meaningful. This result suggests that the Environmental Attitude measure is valid and could be used to assess the extent to which individual respond consistently favourable or unfavourable manner with respect to the environment. With these justifications, the EAS is potentially more suitable for Nigerian populations. Nonetheless, given limitations, findings should be considered preliminary.

This was with the view to ascertaining whether having living children or not having a living child was associated with increased risk of intimate partner violence among currently married women in Nigeria. The study analyzed data from 2008-2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Surveys. The binary logistic regression was applied. Results showed that women who had two or more living children were 20.5% more likely to experience intimate partner violence compared with women who had no living child (OR=1.205; CI: 0.993-1.461). The study concluded that having living children increase women’s risk of intimate partner violence in Nigeria. Women experiencing intimate partner violence should seek psychosocial counselling to reduce the incidence of intimate partner violence that may arise from childbearing.

A total of one hundred and fifty (150) employees were drawn from three selected Local Government Secretariats (Irewole, Isokan and Ayedaade) in Osun state, Nigeria. In all, eighty-five (85) were males representing 65.4%, while the remaining forty five (45) were females representing 34.6% of the total participants. The age ranged between 19 - 56 years with a mean age of 34.46 years and standard deviation (SD) of 8.23 years. Five hypotheses were tested in the course of the study. The result obtained revealed that there was a significant relationship between industrial conflict and perceived work performance (r (128) =0.452, P0.05).The third hypothesis indicated that there is no significant gender difference on the perceived work performance (t (2,128) =0.167, P>0.05).The fourth hypothesis indicated that employee grade level has a significant relationship on the perceived work performance (r (128) =0.284, PKeywords: Industrial conflict, perceived work performance, employee, productivity, local government areaINTRODUCTIONWork performance is generally regarded as an unquestioned fact of life in most large organizations. This is because of its widely accepted and generally unquestioned benefits. When asked, most organizations would argue that the system brings about the benefits of employees being a given feedback regarding their performance, usually at least once a year so that action can be taken to rectify any weaknesses. This would hopefully lead to more effective performance and increased productivity, the system provides an opportunity for performance related discussions that could include; setting goals and work objectives for the employee, aligning individual and organizational goals, identifying training and development needs, and discussing career progression opportunities. The system results in a fair and valid basis for recognizing and rewarding individual performance, the person or persons doing the work may gain new insight into the person being appraised, and vice versa. In the process, the job of the person being appraised may be clarified and better defined; the employer would also be in a better position to understand the problems faced by the employees and employees will take pride in their work when they reach a goal. In essence, the list of benefits highlighted above represents an ideal and perfect view of work performance. Those who study organization and the behaviour of people in organization are concerned with a host of issues, but work performance has always been the bottom line. Unless members of an organization do their jobs, the organization ultimately fails. Of recent, Blumberg and Pringle (1982) proposed a model of work performance that tries to improve on the traditional performance equation (performance = Ability x Motivation) by attempting to incorporate the full range of individual and environmental variables, which interact to produce level and quality of work performance. This model consists of three components, which they call Opportunity, Capacity and Willingness to perform. All organizations face the problem of directing the energies of their staff to the task of achieving organizational goals and objectives. In doing so, organizations need to devise means to influence and channel the behaviours of their employees so as to optimize their contributions. …
