However, the effect of sleep problems in CWCP on caregivers has not been well studied. We aimed to describe the sleep problems in CWCP and their caregivers, and explore the effect of the children's sleep on the caregivers' sleep. Methods This cross-sectional, mixed-methods research was conducted at a pediatric neurology clinic in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. The Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used for assessing sleep problems of the children and their caregivers, respectively. We held three focused group discussions (FGDs) involving 18 caregivers using a pretested FGD guide. We analyzed the quantitative data using Stata-15 software, while qualitative data were transcribed and managed using ATLAS.ti Software. Results We studied 71 CWCP–caregiver dyads and 69 age- and sex-matched controls. There was a male preponderance for CWCP (M:F = 1.09:1) and femal...

We recruited 24 children aged 14 days to 15 years with a male preponderance (male-to-female ratio = 2.4:1). Late presentation was a prominent feature which was highest among children with myopathies with a mean duration of symptoms of 46.5 ± 33.4 months before presentation. Peripheral neuropathy was the most common type of NMDs (63.0%). Among these, injection nerve palsy from the use of wrong site for intramuscular injections was the most common (60.0%). Nonavailability of electrophysiologic and genetic testing as well as appropriate medications was the major challenges. Acquired NMDs are common in our setting. There is a need to improve preventive measures of acquired NMDs and early diagnosis of the inherited types.

One major barrier to the provision of quality pain treatment in many countries is lack of training for healthcare workers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of pain education on the knowledge and attitude of healthcare workers, and opioid utilization in a university teaching hospital. METHODS Pain management workshops were conducted for healthcare workers over a 12-month period. The modified "Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain" questionnaire was administered to participants pre- and post- training for each of the workshops. The total mark by each participant was entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 16 software for windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA) for comparison of means for pre- and post-test. Changes in opioid utilization were evaluated. RESULTS The pre-test and post-test questionnaires were filled by 715 and 700 particip...

No significant differences between study weeks were found for weekly spirometry or eNO. Selfreported asthma symptoms and asthma impact were worse during the short week vs. the long week (p=.07). Conclusion: Objective and subjective changes in asthma were found during a week of deficient sleep, with worse lung function measured by daily peak flow and increased subjective asthma symptoms/ asthma impact. However, no differences were found for spirometry or eNO performed in a clinical setting. Because objective lung function measures are effort dependent, sleep deprived adolescents may perform worse at home than when trained professionals are coaching them. That said, subjective asthma symptoms in combination with daily peak flow are often used to make treatment decisions; thus a better understanding of the relationship between sleep duration and asthma is needed. Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Health Education on Level of Awareness and Knowledge of Nigerian In-School adolescents on Stroke and Its Risk Factors

It contributes to desired behavioural change in the adolescents as well as their parents. Thus, we aimed to determine the baseline knowledge of school attending adolescents about stroke and its risk factors as well as the effect of stroke education on their stroke awareness. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental study design and was conducted in secondary schools in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The schools were divided into intervention and control groups. We assessed the baseline knowledge of the students on stroke, its risk factors, warning signs, and ways of preventing it using a pre-tested structured questionnaire in both intervention and control groups. In the intervention group, health talks on stroke consisting of oral presentation and distribution of fliers were presented for 30 minutes in each selected school. Each school was visited 2 weeks after the health education intervention to assess their knowledge on stroke, its risk factors, and ways of preventing it. The control group was also visited after 2 weeks for a reassessment of their stroke knowledge and the conduct of heath talk on other aspects of neurology such as sleep, epilepsy, etc. Results: A total of 1259 adolescents were studied with 661 in the intervention group and 598 in the control group. The mean age of the respondents was 13.56 § 2.87 the intervention group and 13.38 § 2.06 in the control group. There were higher mean scores on knowledge of stroke and its risk factors among the intervention group than seen in the control group after the stroke education. Conclusions: Stroke education is an effective way of creating and maintaining stroke awareness among school-attending adolescents.

Design: Descriptive cross-sectional survey. Setting: Public and private secondary schools in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. Participants: Multistage sampling technique was used to select 346 school-attending adolescents aged 10-19 years. Measurements: A modified version of the Adolescent Sleep Habits Survey Questionnaire was administered to respondents in the school setting using the facilitated self-administration method. Results: Participants' mean age was 13.5±2.29 years, and the male-female ratio was 1:1.1. The mean total sleep duration on weekends of 9 hours (h) 08 minutes (min) ± 113 min was significantly higher than that of weekdays (7 h 15 min ± 86 min) (P b .001). About half of the respondents (48.7 %) had access to a computer. Majority of the respondents (80.9%) use one or more electronic device at bedtime, although cell phone was used by more than half (52.3%) of the respondents at bedtime. The proportion of adolescents with short sleep duration was 44.4% for weekdays and 5.5% for weekends. Lower social class and non-use of computers in the night time were independent predictors of adequate sleep duration on weekdays, whereas female sex, age (early adolescence), and polygamous family setting were independent predictors of sufficient sleep on weekends. Conclusion: A high proportion of school-attending adolescents have insufficient sleep on weekdays and significantly sleep less during weekdays compared to weekends. There is a need to target adolescents, parents, and school authorities with education on sleep issues.
