As such, the implementation of learning management system (LMS) in a university through normal web-based platform should beexploring the potential use of mobile technology and gadgets in mobile learning platform. This paper aims to investigate the learners' preference of using mobile devices in learning Arabic in IIUM in order to explore their inclination towards using mobile learning technologies in a learning institution. The respondents were selected from an undergraduate learners in two sections of a course who were learning computer applications theoretically and practically in Arabic language for the Bachelor of Revealed Knowledge (Arabic Language and Literature) in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The respondents have been using both platforms of web-based and mobile-based LMS of IIUM I-Taleem for an academic semester in 2015 before responding to this online survey of 5 Likert-scale and an open ended questionnaire. General results of this study revealed that the learners are enjoying learning by using mobile devices although the web-based platform is still available. The use of mobile LMS among learners is found to provide extra learning support, motivation and self-learning option. Among the suggestions for improvement are improving the internet connection facility for student via Wifi and providing mobile devices for learners to use for better implementation of mobile I-Taleem in IIUM.

Various terms have been used to refer to this combination of approaches. These include Blended Learning, hybrid learning, mixed mode learning, mediated learning, hybrid instruction, web-assisted instruction and web-enhanced instruction (Delialioglu & Yildirim, 2007; Gülbahar & Madran, 2009; Bonk, 2004). According to Dziuban, et al. (2004), which term to use, is a matter of preference. The terms are used interchangeably, and may be used to define one another. Colin and Moonen (2001), for example, define Blended Learning as “a hybrid of traditional face-to-face and online learning so that instruction occurs both in the classroom and online, and where the online component becomes a natural extension of traditional classroom learning” (Colis & Moonen, 2001 cited in Rovai & Jordan, 2004, p.3).

The use of modern technology in the process of teaching and learning the Arabic language has a ve... more The use of modern technology in the process of teaching and learning the Arabic language has a very important role in developing student's performance and improving his four language skills at all levels of learning. The students of non-native Arabic speakers are in the high need to use modern technology in language learning, that contribute to the development of the four basic language skills, since they are living outside from the original Arabic environment. This technology contributes to the creation of an artificial environment to learn a second language among these students. With regard to the process of learning the Arabic language by using modern technology in Malaysia, it has attracted academic discussions research by various researchers and experts in this area, such as discussed by Muhammad Feham and Isarji (2000), Zawawi (2008) and Ashinida Aladdin, et. al. (2008) on the issue of the lack of use of Arabic language teachers for modern instructional technology, Ashinida Aladdin, et. al. 2008), while (Muhammad Feham (2006) on the other hand has raised the issue of the lack of innovation of modern technology in teaching Arabic language. However, we find that there are several attempts to invent more modern technologies in teaching Arabic language in Malaysia such as the design of computer language games in learning Arabic (Muhammad Sabri (2011) , the use of E-Portfolio in Arabic language learning (Muhammad Firdaus (2012) and Virtual Tutor (Ahmed Ragheb (2013). Consequently, this research seeks to study the possibility of designing and developing a prototype that specializes in improving writing skill in Arabic language for non-native speaker through a program that is considered as flexible and interactive. The program is expected to enhance learners’ self-motivation and improve their language skills by self-monitoring common writing errors done by Malaysian students. The design of such an interactive program aims to develop Arabic writing skill and eventually to evaluate this program among students for further improvement in the future. This program is specifically designed to identify and to correct morphological errors by using Microsoft Word program via a special font known as ‘Modaqqeeq Sarfiy’ (morphological checker). This research is carried out via phases of ‘ADDIE’ model in the design and development of this prototype among the students who specialize in Arabic language as they are studying a course for computer applications in language and literature in International Islamic University Malaysia. The result of this study has indicated high mean scores among learners to this interactive spelling checker, beside suggestions and comments forwarded by them to improve the program for its future development. This research has definitely stressed on the importance of using advanced and new emerging technologies as a mean to enhance the teaching of Arabic language to non-native speakers especially in the four language skills. Ironically, language accuracy and fluency depends on the development and the spirit of various changing of modern technologies.

The respondents were purposively selected from 23 students who were taking this practical course in an academic semester in their first year of study. The data were collected from students’ presentation and the analysis of the speech discourse was conducted during the second semester of the academic year 2014-2015. The students were requested to present a group presentation on a certain topic by creating a video project via Youtube®, which consists of their speech practical discourse. The finding revealed that the major errors occurred in the application of inflectional parsing during the speech for persuasion among the first year students. In general, the data from the mean analysis revealed that the major errors occurred in the application of inflectional parsing during the speech for persuasion among the students. Based on the syntactical analysis from observation, the researchers found that the most frequent errors were inflectional parsing (22.07%), followed by the least mistake, which was the omission of “Fa” after the word “Ammaa” (1.5%). Other mistakes were found in using the gender of Arabic words (20.7%); singular, dual, or plural forms (19.4%); particles (13.5%); definite article “Al” (12.9%); relative nouns (5.1%); and the use of “an” of gerund after imperfect verb (2.5%). In general, this paper has contributed to a list of syntactical topics that need to be emphasized by teachers in a speech and persuasion course in order to produce quality students for Arabic communication after graduation and to fulfil the needs of market workplace based on descriptive findings and a checklist of observation in persuasive speech.

This paper focuses on a project at the Quranic Language Department (QLD), International Islamic University of Malaysia to develop a new approach to online instruction. The goals of the project were to explore how the addition of video using screen capture might create a more engaging user experience, and how the online video tutorial might therefore both improve existing information literacy training as well as offering a "just-in-time" point of support. This paper researches the practical steps involved in creating useful and accessible online tutorialsfor Arabic Case System lessons. In order to examine the efficacy of this tool, students from Advance Arabic level were tested with formative test related to Arabic Case System topics. The result demonstrates that screen capture can enhance students" performance and maximise the impact of e-learning tools, helping online tutorials to deliver information in a more personal and immediate way.

Ar... more This study deliberates on the problem of teaching Arabic poetry to Malay students in Malaysia. Arabic is the third language after Malay and English, taught in Malaysia. In fact, Arabic letters are introduced and taught in pre-school level to enable Malay students to read Qur'an and written texts in Jawi, which is dependent on the Arabic letters. This study also looks into the teaching of Arabic as a core subject in public schools, which relies heavily on memorization of vocabulary and grammatical rules and to composition of sentences. The above method of teaching at this stage has been found to be similar to the method applied in the Middle East, where Arabic is the mother tongue. This study highlights the problems and challenges faced by Malay students in public schools in the teaching of Arabic literature. These problems revolve around three main domains: teaching literature as a component in language teaching, lack of knowledge about cultures and societies that exist in the Arab countries, lack of emotional attachment to the given subject, lack of teaching method, and the inability to transfer the techniques used in the Malay language into similar cases in Arabic language. This study has depended primarily on Bloom's Taxonomy of learning. It has also suggested a new method of teaching that contains five learning units for the comprehension and mastery of Arabic poetry and literature. To make this a more comprehensive approach, a number of approaches to teaching have been proposed to provide a more interesting teaching and learning milieu not only for students but also to teachers, enabling them to be applied for self-study or in a classroom setting.

It is increasingly becoming the focus of researchers in designing and developing new and up-to-date educational aids that cater to the learning needs of 21st century learners as well as keeping in-line with the transformation of latest technologies. This paper features a virtual Arabic learning tool prototype which is specifically designed for primary schools learners in Malaysia. The design and development of this prototype are modeled on the methods and approaches of design and development research by Richey & Klein (2007) or formerly known as developmental research (Richey, Klein & Nelson, 2004). This prototype is designed and developed based on adapted „design principles‟ adapted from a study of an online Arabic vocabulary learning games prototype (Muhammad Sabri, 2011) by adapting instructional design model of rapid prototyping by Tripp, S., & Bichelmeyer, B. (1990). This interactive Arabic virtual learning tool prototype enables teachers and students access to additional Arabic language learning aids that complement traditional learning methods. It facilitates Arabic learning enhancement through a compendium and a variety of open-sources of learning tools such as e-book of Arabic text books, educational games, audio-video learning aids, online translator, online chat-box for discussion, link of Arabic keyboard for computer, and links of various websites in learning Arabic for children.

This program is established based on the complete awareness of the language contents and its four levels of language study (phonological, morphological, syntactical and semantic) with distinct focus on prominent foundations and theories concerned with academic accomplishment as derived from the elearning data system. The research is established on textual and phonological database involving vocabulary comprehension and its manners of pronunciation and inferring to the most highly expected errors from the non-native speakers of Arabic. More than 120 users participated in the process, under the supervision of a specialized teamwork between the administrative, linguistic, educational and engineering departments. The tentative results statistically reflect the program"s efficiency and its distinctive role in prompting the academic process and the increase in the cognitive outcome among the students who are assigned as the experimental sample group in comparison to the results of the realizable control sample from similar conventional education. This program garners practical and academic features ensuring more worth in studying it compared to other e-learning programs. In essence, Virtual Tutor does not only embody theoretical foundations which are supported with modern methodological designs, but it also simultaneously ensures efficient participatory role of the users.

The researchers designed questionnaire with eleven items about CALL issues e.g. (the future of CALL, CALL status at present, methodology of CALL, CALL and research, the theoretical framework of CALL, the development of CALL materials, the opportunities for training CALL teachers and the CALL in the third world as well as the CALL scholars' comments and suggestions). The researchers sent this questionnaire to CALL scholars for their responses. The researchers used their opinions and suggestions after analysing their responses. The significant of this research are based on the researchers' knowledge there is no other researchers dealing with Computer Assisted Language Learning in Arabic language, provides suggested Arabic CALL curriculums and guidelines to our teachers as well as our students in IIUM in designing Arabic CALL lessons and CALL curriculum, provide guideline to our teachers as well as students in IIUM in designing criteria of Arabic CALL evaluation. This research is also assisting our Arabic CALL teachers in CALL research as well as providing many articles and it is also reviewing CALL programs. The development of CALL material relates very much on education systems; an enhanced understanding of language pedagogy, each country's education policies and resources. Training teachers is fundamental, but often neglected due to time and cost factors, computers will be used, but without a cogent argument to state that they improve the situation, administrators and policy makers will be hard pressed to justify additional expenses. Word-processing is still the most common application in CALL. The problem then as now knows enough about the technology and pedagogy to integrate the two effectively (see Ahmed , 2002b).

The method is also known as developmental research, design research, design-based research, formative research and design-cased and possesses conceptual underpinning and practical aspects of the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of ‘doing’. This paper describes the design and development of a web-based Arabic vocabulary learning games prototype incorporating the methods and approaches of DDR for elementary learners in Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The effort in generating this learning prototype attempts to design, develop and integrate a game-based learning application in an online platform. It is meant to provide an interactive learning experience for learners who have been through traditional non-computer based Arabic teaching and learning methods. Their feedbacks and responses are then gathered and analysed as the formative evaluation for the design and development principles. The exploration of the potential of use for the game-based learning prototype in teaching and learning in real setting by various experts, learners and teachers was also among the steps taken to evaluate the usability and practicality of the prototype during the design and development phases.
