An audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (audio-CASI) technology for measuring those behaviors was tested with 1690 respondents in the 1995 National Survey of Adolescent Males. The respondents were randomly assigned to answer questions using either audio-CASI or a more traditional self-administered questionnaire. Estimates of the prevalence of male-male sex, injection drug use, and sexual contact with intravenous drug users were higher by factors of 3 or more when audio-CASI was used. Increased reporting was also found for several other risk behaviors.

In fathers’ descriptions of their parental role models, three themes emerged: types of models that fathers identified as role models for them as parents, affective evaluations the fathers ascribed to the models, and content that the fathers perceived learning from the models. Highly involved fathers were more likely to cite peer parents than to specifically cite their own fathers as influential role models for them and infrequently cited their spouses as models. Low-involvement fathers more often attributed positive affective evaluations to their models than did highly involved fathers.

appraisals, and behavior was proposed.
Parental identity and behavior in married parents
were then investigated as a function of partner’s
and perceived reflected-appraisals, taking into account
gender context effects. Sixty-four married
couples completed the Caregiving and Breadwinning
Identity and Reflected-Appraisal Inventory
(CBIRAI), developed for this study to assess parental
caregiving and breadwinning identity and
reflected-appraisals, as well as caregiving and
breadwinning behavior measures. The model was
confirmed for fathers and partially confirmed for
mothers. Specifically, caregiving identity and behavior
in fathers, and breadwinning identity in
mothers were functions of perceived reflected-appraisals. Limitations and implications are discussed.
