We present the first measurement of two-particle momentum correlations in jets produced in p " p ... more We present the first measurement of two-particle momentum correlations in jets produced in p " p collisions at ffiffi ffi s p ¼ 1:96 TeV. Results are obtained for charged particles within a restricted cone with an opening angle of 0.5 radians around the jet axis and for events with dijet masses between 66 and 563 GeV=c 2 . A comparison of the experimental data to theoretical predictions obtained for partons within the framework of resummed perturbative QCD in the next-to-leading log approximation shows that the parton momentum correlations survive the hadronization stage of jet fragmentation, giving further support to the hypothesis of local parton-hadron duality. The extracted value of the next-to-leading-logapproximation parton shower cutoff scale Q eff set equal to à QCD is found to be ð1:4 þ0:9 À0:7 Þ Â 100 MeV.

We present a measurement of the tt production cross section using events with one charged lepton ... more We present a measurement of the tt production cross section using events with one charged lepton and jets from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. A b-tagging algorithm based on the probability of displaced tracks coming from the event interaction vertex is applied to identify b quarks from top decay. Using 318 pb −1 of data collected with the CDF II detector, we measure the tt production cross section in events with at least one restrictive (tight) b-tagged jet and obtain 8.9 +1.0 −1.0 (stat.) +1.1 −1.0 (syst.) pb. The cross section value assumes a top quark mass of mt = 178 GeV/c 2 in the acceptance corrections. The dependence of the cross section on mt is presented in the paper. This result is consistent with other CDF measurements of the tt cross section using different samples and analysis techniques, and has similar systematic uncertainties. We have also performed consistency checks by using the b-tagging probability function to vary the signal to background ratio and also using events that have at least two b-tagged jets.

Vector leptoquarks have been proposed in many extensions of the standard model (SM). Observing a number of events in agreement with SM expectations, assuming Yang-Mills (minimal) couplings, we obtain the most stringent upper limit on the VLQ3 pair production cross section of 344 fb (493 fb) and lower limit on the VLQ3 mass of 317 GeV/c 2 (251 GeV/c 2 ) at 95% C.L.

For þ E 6 T and jet þ E 6 T candidate samples corresponding to 2.0 and 1:1 fb À1 of integrated luminosity, respectively, we observe good agreement with standard model expectations and obtain a combined lower limit on the fundamental parameter of the large extra dimensions model M D as a function of the number of extra dimensions in the model.

This is the first measurement of the top quark mass using top-antitop pair candidate events in the lepton + jets and dilepton decay channels simultaneously. We reconstruct two observables in each channel and use a non-parametric kernel density estimation technique to derive two-dimensional probability density functions from simulated signal and background samples. The observables are the top quark mass and the invariant mass of two jets from the W decay in the lepton + jets channel, and the top quark mass and the scalar sum of transverse energy of the event in the dilepton channel. We perform a simultaneous fit for the top quark mass and the jet energy scale, which is constrained in situ by the hadronic W boson mass. Using 332 lepton + jets candidate events and 144 dilepton candidate events, we measure the top quark mass to be Mtop = 171.9 ± 1.7 (stat. + JES) ± 1.1 (other syst.) GeV/c 2 = 171.9 ± 2.0 GeV/c 2 .

The measured dijet mass spectrum is found to be consistent with next-toleading-order perturbative QCD predictions, and no significant evidence of new particles is found. We set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on cross sections times the branching fraction for the production of new particles decaying into dijets with both jets having a rapidity magnitude |y| < 1. These limits are used to determine the mass exclusions for the excited quark, axigluon, flavor-universal coloron, E6 diquark, color-octet techni-ρ, W ′ , and Z ′ .

Using a data sample derived from an integrated luminosity of 83 pb^-1 collected with the upgraded Collider Detector (CDF II) at the Fermilab Tevatron, we analyze b hadrons, H_b, partially reconstructed in the semileptonic decay mode H_b -> mu^- D^0 X. Our measurement of the inclusive production cross section for b hadrons with transverse momentum p_T > 9 GeV/c and rapidity |y|<0.6 is sigma = 1.30 mub +/- 0.05 mub(stat) +/- 0.14 mub (syst) +/- 0.07 mub (B), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and from branching fractions respectively. The differential cross sections dsigma/dp_T are found to be in good agreement with recent measurements of the H_b cross section and well described by fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm predictions.

We use a signal of 12.7 × 10 3 D 0 → K + π − decays with proper decay times between 0.75 and 10 mean D 0 lifetimes. The data sample was recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.5 fb −1 for pp collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV. We search for D 0 −D 0 mixing and measure the mixing parameters to be RD = (3.04±0.55)×10 −3 , y ′ = (8.5±7.6)×10 −3 , and x ′2 = (−0.12±0.35)×10 −3 . We report Bayesian probability contours in the x ′2 − y ′ plane and find that the data are inconsistent with the no-mixing hypothesis with a probability equivalent to 3.8 Gaussian standard deviations.
